Sounds like a great idea to me, but reading these posts raised enough technical questions to boggle my mind.

I’m constantly broke, (and it’s not because I’m in Med school, more like I should be in a medical institution), but I ‘d gladly scrape up at least the $40 if I knew it would end up in having results than just vanish into cyberspace.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the idea to register to agree to contribute, and if they receive enough commitments to put it legally into play, or to actually contribute the money and hope that they receive enough dough to actually bake the cake?

By the way, it is being posted on other sites, saw it on sci-fi Firefly BB, haven’t checked browncoats.serenitymovie.com yet, but do know the more sites it’s posted, the greater the response will be.

You are absolutely right XeroG. They failed, and I will tell you why.

Star Trek is scifi that alienates a lot of people. You either love it, hate it, or grew up with it, and a whole lot of people hate it and are luke warm on growing up with it. You might even say it has a stigma. And I am talking about the WHOLE franchise in general. Star trek is to me, and from what I gather many other people, the dwarf bread of science fiction; As long as you have it around, there is always something else to consume.

That said, Firefly is different on a lot of levels.
-Fireflys highest approval ratings came from
women, when poled. Star Trek rates highest with
men.
-Firefly has a much gritter less polished theme
-Firefly could be called anti-establishment in so far that the crew of firefly lives by doing things that the characters from Star Trek would toss your ass in the brig for.
-...The core cast is significantly smaller and easier to identify with
- ...There are no aliens, which also make the universe easier to identify with
-...it is far less predictable.

Yes, firefly is Scifi, but it is different more different than any other Trek Scifi out there. FUNDAMENTALLY.

To say otherwise would be to say something so ridiculas that it would be on par with saying Alfred Bester's novels were never widely embraced because they were jazzy existential pulp fiction.

I mean...yeah there is a grain of truth in that...but you are missing so much of the greater picture in your willingness to be pessimistic.

But anyways, I digress. What I meant to say is,

Go bloody nay say and bray about your lost trek flick somewhere else. I told you what I am trying to do, and if you don't want to be a part of it, don't waste my gorram time, sugar.

I personally am a fan of Kool aid. I also believe that if one decides to indulge in koolaid they should do so at their own risk, carefully guarding their beverage against tampering until consumption is complete, most especially in the company of crazy people. I don't think I am crazy, but the funny thing about crazy people is, most of the time they think they aren't crazy.

On a higher note we are now flying at $38 950 mock pledge dollars.

If we can have a respectable amount of mock pledge money in 3 months I will start the actual website for collecting cash.

The site will have a contract where I explain in detail my obligations for the cash, and you give information for a refund if need be, But I doubt that will happen. I am doing this with the help of a friend who is a lawyer, and another who is a web designer. The intent of this is to make sure that you can absolutely trust me with that money, and have avenue of legal recourse to do so, until the time comes when I can fork over a big rubber check to Whedon.

But to be frank, it isn't worth my time, or the amount of Fees out of my pocket (yes I am still paying my friends for their time, just not as much as I would a stranger) if I don't have substantial numbers from a mock pledge and have began having dialogue with SciFi and Whedon. I can't have Dialogue with Whedon and SciFi until I have some credibility, SO;

I need the mock pledges and the website as big and bad as it can be. I will work on the website, You guys need to help me with advertising other sites and clueing in other flans. to this thread.

I gave this some thought the first time someone suggested it. Here's what I came up with.

1) Forget about a new TV season -- that would cost in excess of $40M and if we had that kind of money to spend Serenity would have made back what it needed for a sequel already. What we are talking about is a series of direct to DVD movies. SciFi can finace a schlocky TV movie for around $1.5M to get something that looks like Firefly we're talking at least $3M for the first one. If we can't raise that much dough then it's game over.

2) Everything depends on what the deal is between Fox and Universal. Did Uni only buy theatrical rights or did are they allowed to make DVD features too. This is crucial because we need Universal to make this series. Why? Well first up, before the acquisition by NBC Universal was an independent producer. Not tied to any network they will make things for anyone with money. Second and most importantly they have the ship! Fox destroyed their Serenity, so the only folks with prebuilt sets are Universal. I don't want to over state this but when someone says $2M an episode some part of that is a share of the cost of building the initial expensive sets. Serenity from the movie easily cost two or three million dollars which would be the entire production budget for a direct to DVD movie if it had to be built again from scratch. Without those sets I don't think we're in business.

3) Public donations to finance productions is done all the time in the theatre, people that put in money are called "Angels" and if the show is a success they make a profit if not they lose their money. A good entertainment lawyer familiar with theatre financing could probably set up the contracts needed to put this on a proper legal footing. The problem the Enterprise fans had and the reason Paramount panicked is that you can't just collect money and dump a sack of cash on a studio. If Bill Gates wanted a Serenity sequel tomorrow he couldn't just write a check and leave. They won't accept money from an individual or a front organization, they need a proper contract with a proper legal entity.

That being said. If we could organise this. I would invest $500 towards our $3M budget.

1.) I was toying with the idea of just propping the money to Whedon and universal to make a mini series for SciFi's syndication, but the initial idea was that We would finance the pilot for a second season, and whedon would pitch it. If it was another 3 hour long pilot, like serenity was, that may work out well, if a bunch of small networks globally pitch in to the production fund for free syndication later, plus our cash, plus angel cash, plus maybe what universal was already willing to foot for this, we will more than likely have a 2nd series with legs.

2.)You are absolutely right. That was where my first ? was in setting this up. When I can afford to put a lawyer to this, I will.

3.) I have the lawyer , I just need to scrape his fees together. The idea was that in donating people would be signing on to a contract that they did so with the idea that the money was let to me in trust to insure it was put to use doing....(ie Joss Whedon has complete creative control, all characters return are cast as seen in the origenal show...etc. etc... ) what needs to be done in order to insure the pilot of a new series or, depending on the cash gathered, a new season, or a set of mini movies, or what have you.... That way everyone gets what they want within reason, and the cash is given with an outline of what is expected in return.

By the time the cash gets to a studio, We would need to have whedon on board for this with project proposals, then we give them a neat little package, they mull it over, and when I get the green light from Whedon &Co. that the criteria is satisfied, I fork over the cash...if that is not the case, and it looks like it will not be the case, I refund.

This will be done professionally. I have taken and will take many more, great pains to make sure of such...

The two biggest obstacles to this, for me, right now are, getting proof from the fans that this may work so my lawyer and web designer can work in good faith of payment, and then taking the time to figure out how the hell I am going to pay them after their work is done.

So yeah, that's where I am at right now.

1) Forget the idea of a new TV pilot, do you know how many of those are pitched every year? Any idea of how few get made, of those how many less get screened and how many less get picked up? Further forget about SciFi, they had the chance to take Firefly after Fox dumped it and passed.

Their big boss Bonnie Hammer says she wants to move away from "space shows" (which is ironic since her big 3 are space shows.) We only have Firefly on SciFi because someone at Universal realised that Serenity might do better at the box office if someone had actually seen the show. The three shows in SciFi's big night lineup pull in a consistent 2.0+ week in week out and all three have been renewed through 2007. By contrast Firefly pulls in 1.7. If you make TV movies you might get SciFi to buy screening rights at $1-1.5M as they currently do with their schlock horror shows.

2) Other than getting Joss to bless the project there isn't much he can do. He is signed to two movies back to back meaning he wont have the time to do much more than endorse the effort. My thought would be to get Tim Minear involved in some way, possibly paying for a first movie script so that at least we have something for the effort.

3) Like I said I don't think a TV series is likely. If a DVD movie is the direction this ends up going the finances of this thing would have to be very carefully structured. It was the "you send us the money and we'll give it to the creators" rubbish that told Paramount to run away from the Trek fan's screaming. Huge amounts of money are spent by the entertainment industry to sue each other or to avoid being sued. The potential legal costs of a "here's a bag of money" sponsors is enough to put anyone off. It really has to be structured like any other entertainment investor with shares and contracts and the whole mess. It needs an entertainment lawyer to write up --- trust me on this my wife writes scifi, the advice of SFWA is don't ever think of using a family lawyer, this is a specialist job--- but it isn't impossible. Ever sat in a movie and watched 8 or 9 company logos show up before things get started? Some of those companies made the thing, some are vanity companies of the stars (if they have a producer credit) and some just supplied some money. That's what we need to be, one of the ones that supplies money.

First: you're all nuts. I love this grassroots effort. Helluva gesture... but as a televion professional, I can assure you you can't come up with the scratch to get this show back on the air.

He's not to blame. Firefly simply doesn't have the clout it needs to get picked up again by a network. He made a good effort with the film... hoping to boost interest. The best hope for the future of the series would be a deal with Sci-fi or another cable network like Spike. Sadly, without the network money... it could deal a blow to the high production values that make the show what it is.

Don't get me wrong: I hate it- but that's how TV works. Good to see there are so many die-hard fans. But the amount of money you can put together does not come anywhere near what networks expect for their ad buys.

Firefly will join Sports Night and Strangers With Candy on my shelf of shows that died far before their time.

And for TV sales 101:
Networks expect to make at least 200% profit on first-run programming.

OK: all that being said... keep it up... and you can put me down for $50 for the first new episode.

Hmm yes the legality of it all. What are our real aims? What is feasible? Another TV series on a network? Don't know. Too many variables. And besides, if Joss gets the go ahead for a sequel, he and the execs might just satisfy us all with a trilogy.

That being said, you never know what you cn achieve if you don't try. So, against the critics and all odds lets rally and see what we can do.

I would gladly pledge $400. I have it and pledge it and would possibly pledge more if and when we get this off the ground. Plus, think also in these terms. If we were in fact to go ahead with a real scheme to raise money, you have to think Bake Sale mentality. Way back in primary school, you wanted to go on a field trip, well you have a bake sale! We need to think of doing the same thing, with proceeds going to the firefly revolution. People sometimes don't care where the money is going, they just want a cupcake.

Okay so I am using the actual bake sale as a symbol for other things we can do to raise money from outside the fanbase.

Anyway like I said: $400

I just want to say that I have so much admiration for trying something on this scale. I'm a firm believer in the concept that anything worth having takes work and a few risks...sooo, in the spirit of that, I will pledge $200 if this becomes a reality.

However, there are some points I want to make. Not to discourage anybody from this, or trying anything they can, but I think some of the "nay-saying" posts had a few good points.

The problem with this approach is that what it tells the TV execs is that Firefly has a devoted, hard-core fan base. Problem is, they already know this. Hence how the movie happened in the first place. What we need is to show them that this has the potential for a LARGE "casual" fan base. They need to see that this show can reach and excite a really wide, varied audience. Think of the success with Lost. Tons of people watch that show, talk about it at work, etc., and only a small percentage of the viewers are hard-core fans, i.e., going on the websites, buying the extra merchandise, etc. The casual fan base (which is almost always significantly larger than the really devoted fans), the reaching all the various categories of viewership, is what Firefly/Serenity needs to be huge. (This is not to say that we shouldn't make as many of them into hard-core fans as possible -the more, the better for our beloved show =)The fact is, though, most TV viewers are never going to become hard-core fans of anything, even if they watch something every week faithfully.)

What the powers that be need to see, in short, to convince them of this, is huge DVD sales. Getting a sequel to the movie is likely to be a far more manageable feat at this point than bringing back the series. Univeral has already bought the rights to a sequel - they simply need to be convinced that it will be worth it to make. With the movie barely breaking even, the only thing that can save our ship now are getting those DVDs out of the stores and into the hands of the public. Now, I know, everyone here is going to buy a DVD, maybe even a few for Christmas gifts. Great! But what I suggest, for those who can afford it (I don't think anyone should starve, or anything) is to match the pledge you would give here with buying that amount in DVDs. That might equal quite a few DVDs, but the point isn't just sales - it's exposure. Give them as gifts, Christmas or Happy Tuesday gifts, to friends or anonymously (maybe could attach a note to it, like "If you like this movie, you'll love the series it was based on, Firefly." or something) Donate them to charity - lots of charities have fund-raising raffles and need to solicit door prizes from people. Use them as door prizes at your own holiday parties (provided you haven't already converted all your friends =)) Get the word out. If each person you get the movie to (or convince to rent the movie) tells just one person to do the same...well, the ripple effect will be endless. It already started with the great effort on the movie - now we just have to step up our efforts with the DVD. In addition to my $200 pledge here, I pledge that over the next three months (because I'm kinda poor myself, and can't do it all at once) I'm going to spend that much buying Serenity DVDs.

So, yes. Pledge what you can to this list. I think it is a worthy attempt, and it could work. But we know that DVD sales will be the key to anyone in power even looking at something like this. If the fan base is there, it will come. Lets just make sure that fan base is big enough to support it. I want to hear people cussin' in Chinese around the watercooler. =) Keep up the good work, ya'll. W'll do do this!

I've seen the movie multiple times.

I've told everyone that I know who might be interested in Serenity to go and see it.

I've bought all of the action figures.

I've bought reading and collector's copies of the comics.

I've bought the novelization of the movie.

I've bought the book that had the script in it.

I've bought almost all of the trading cards.

I've bought the movie posters.

I've bought the Firefly box set and have the Serenity DVD on pre-order at Amazon.

I've got no more to give.

What we really needed were more people to go to the movie and I'm not talking about dedicated Firefly fans going to the movie one more time. I'm talking about people who aren't already fans and who aren't even that into scifi going to the movie. That task was really Universal's. They're the ones with the deep pockets that can buy advertising time around the world and I'm not sure who gets the actors on TV talk shows. I don't know if it's Universal or the actor's agents but we needed them on Regis and Kelly, Oprah, the local news and so forth in order to promote the movie to a mass audience who wouldn't normally go to a scifi movie but would go and see something like Star Wars or Star Trek IV. Then, you have to consider the fact that Joss has two other movies that he's working on and he really wants to do more Serenity movies, not revive the TV show, which is legally tied up for ten years anyway.

Sorry for being a wet blanket but I've heard these calls to action so many times in the year and a half that I've been on Firefly boards that I had to finally say something about them. Up until now, I've just shaken my head and moved on to other threads and now that I've said my piece, I'll go back to doing that very thing.

I love this idea and will say right off the bat, I will scrape under the sofa if need be to find $100.

I am wholeheartedly agreeing, however, with the view that we need to grab attention in the DVD sales and what's more - MEDIA ATTENTION.

There have been shows in the past that have been saved for an extra season or half season (two I can think of immediately) by massive fan support.

BUT, I think one of our major tools in this uprising is the sheer fact that people may think we're slightly mad

If this idea takes off in a big way and news of it leaks into mainstream entertainment circles - that generates interest, sadly something that wasn't utilised enough in the original marketing campaign.

Still, I'm the first to admit, we are kind of scary in bulk

and us pushing too hard or being seen as too radical, may scare off some potential 'general' viewers. But at the same time, we really have very little to lose and if this can be recognised by the media - well any exposure helps I guess.

So - add my $100 to the list (I will get searching for more). I’ll remove myself from my soap box now

Ok just to respond to the self-described 'wet blanket'. I appreciate your opinion, and I know we've heard this stuff a hundred times and it's never worked, but what's wrong with a little optimism? Like all really hard things in life, sometimes it takes a hundred failures before you succeed. I for one am not going to dump on this chance just because it's unlikely.

And while I'm at it: Sure you've spent a lot on Serenity stuff. If you can't afford more, that's perfectly fine, but I don't think there's a need to complain that Joss has bled you dry. That was money you spent willingly, and that's all this thread is about. If you happen to have money you're willing to contribute to the cause, great. If not, don't worry about it, but don't dump on us for wanting to.

Oh and by the way, my fiancee pledges 100$ a season as well.
