I had a hilarious vision of us getting Nathan Fillion to do an ad for the dating service ala the e-Harmony ads. But instead of the 'normal' happy couples there were couples in Jayne hats and dressed like Browncoats, and Nathan saying things like "Whether you were for unification or independance we can help you search the 'verse to find your one truely", "You don't need to be Psychic to find the love of your life" and "You won't be headed to the Special Hell if you take advantage of our Special Deal!" Just a whole bevy of bad browncoat humor. Oi, I am so strange.

Yes yes yes. This is a key point I always hammer in the endless boy/girl discussions.

Yeah, e-Harmony...I joined it something like 16 or 17 months ago (of course it sat unused for many months while I was with my last gf, i had purchased a year subscription). I've been matched with something like 200 people since I've been on there and have only gotten to the point where I met one, yes only one. It seems most I'm matched with really aren't good matches, haha. I think I live in a bad area for what I'm looking for...

Yeah, that's amazingly sexy. Not the rum part, though. I can't drink rum anymore (and after my eye opening time i enjoyed last night I don't think I can drink vodka or even orange juice ever again, haha...hey progress, I had a good time last night and I don't feel guilty about it. I'm moving forward).

This is somehow related to that clingyness element that was getting batted around the other thread. "Desparate" people are so less than desirable because they have that psychic aura that tells you that they will be clingy if they can only find someone. "Desparate" and clingy people are insecure and expect the person they find to solve all their problemas and make their world a paradise. Can you say "codependant" children? I knew you could. No wonder no one wants them. No one wants to get into a interpersonal relationship with a blackhole.

That's what I'm doing right now, finding out what it is I want to enjoy in life (although I'm fairly sure I know what those things are). I've always been a solitary person, for the most part. I don't mind being alone...or at least that was how it was until I had my first gf a couple years ago. I still enjoy my solitude, but one can't help but miss the other half. I have been a desperate clingy person...I prolly still am, though I'm working on that most diligently. Yes codependant is bad but only to a point. I think if there is no dependency on the other then there's something wrong (or just different, not compatible for me) with the relationship. Holding that other person doesn't neccessarily get you through the week (blasphemy), but it sure as hell makes it a lot better.

Yeah, it's unhealthy. I've been going through whad did I do wrong/what's wrong with me? on and off for about 15 years which constitues more than 3/5 of my life. It's devastating...and it's hard not to do when you're someone as insanely analytical as I am. I take every comment, nuance of speech, body language and think it over until I must have figured out every possible meaning for it and every possible past/future that brought it about.

It seems right to me ;D I can't stand SMG (i've never understood why men pine after her, her and jennifer love hewitt). Also, it always seemed rather juvenile. Perhaps I'd like the later seasons? It sucks when a show seems interesting, but you can't bring yourself to watch it because of certain actors (Buffy, Ghost Whisperer).

Ah, I'm here now, and that statement no longer holds true ;D My suckiness is so immense as to sap all positive energy from this (traitorous) post ;p

I'm the kind of person to say that but actually mean it. A quick hug and a kiss from my past gfs sent me into cloud 9 for the rest of the day.

I think S6 is mostly crap too, CallMeSerenity. I love OMWF and I the ep right after it, "Tabula Rasa" is also quite good. After that, it's pretty much a crapfest, in my opinion.

"Hush" is from S4, by the way.

The idea of a Browncoat meeting/dating website is a great idea but I'd like to see it include Whedonites of all stripes not just FIREFLY fans.

Oh, and Chris have you seen S2 of ANGEL yet? I've forgotten.

See how little I know about Buffy?

Tabula Rasa was the funny one where they all lost their memories and got their rolls mixed up? And Spike thought Giles was his father or something?

THAT was a funny episode.

TWG is going to run a dating service on her website? Excellent. As for a name... how about something like "Find your Zoe" (for those seeking women) and "Find your Wash" (for those seeking men).

I would also say this - there is no hint like bodily contact. If you're trying to hit on a guy, take any excuse to touch him. If he's not interested, he'll flinch away (try a couple of times to be sure though). If he is... well, keeping touching his arm till he asks you out.

Remember, a nice guy doesn't want to cause anyone pain, including embarassment, so he won't ask you out unless he knows he's going to get a favourable answer or that you won't mind in the slightest about being asked out. If you want your nice guy, you've gotta make a lot of the early running. After that, well, piece of cake.

Batty-No, I agree, it was a good one.

I just didn't like the show overall. But I will admit there was some fantastic writing and exciting plots and some really good episodes. I like that one and Hush and OMWF and the one where Buffy drinks the beer and goes all cavewomany (Fire bad. Tree pretty) and probably a few others when I think about it.

I'm not a SMG fan, or a DB fan and that turned me off of it, as did some other stuff.

I liked Oz-oh, the Halloween ones were usually funny.

See? It's not that I didn't think the shows weren't well written (Joss is a genius) I just didn't like the show overall.

I couldn't stand Angel at all because it had both Cordy and Angel (neither of whom I liked when I watched Buffy) and then that Wes guy came around. Bleh.

Okay, enough babbling. Joss rules. Firefly rocks.

When you said "Excellent" did you use your evil voice and do the finger temple thing? Because that's what I was picturing you doing and it made me LAUGH!

Also, I tried the touching thing once and the guy DID NOT get the hint. But he didn't flinch or anything either. Mixed signals. It gave me a headache.

Yeah, I'm even oblivious to the touching thing sometimes myself, but I think you need to go at least that far with it (as long as you think the guy doesn't have some sort of personal space complex ;D). I really, really need to be bludgeoned over the head to know someone's got an interest in me. As was said, we don't want to cause you discomfiture or assume anything about your advances. Be overly obvious. Hell, be captain obvious.

CMS: I see the confusing statements in my previous posts. "Yep, that's the one" referred to "Hush". But the "it" was referring to "Tabula Rasa". Gotta watch my pronouns.

I don't how much you've seen of ANGEL, but for me the development of Wes is what kept the show humming for five years.

I won't anymore about that because it gets into spoiler territory.

And does anybody know when TWG is going to launch this website?

So, I hope no one's taking it seriously. Because the closest we're going to find to a dating service is RIGHT HERE on this thread.

Funny idea: we could start a thread that's like those silly ads in magazines. You know:

The biggest waste of time and money. Plus it REALLY REALLY hurt.

Ouch! One of my ex-boyfriends tried online dating and it didn't work for him. When he met the girl, there just weren't any sparks for him and he didn't call her again; however, there were some for her and she was hurt when he didn't want to see her again. He didn't tell me why he didn't spark with her. After talking to each other for weeks, it seems like it shouldn't be one of those "he's just not into you" things for him. But, what do I know about men? Apparently, not much because I'm still single.

Yeah, I know how that goes. Earlier I mentioned that I had met only 1 person through e-Harmony. Things were alright on the phone and stuff, she seemed interesting. I went to see her and didn't really feel any kind of chemistry, but I did mostly enjoy the day...so I agreed to meet again sometime. By the end of the second I still wasn't feeling any sort of romantic inclination towards her, so I cut it off. It was really hard for me because I knew she wasn't feeling the same way I was. I could tell she really was into me ;(

I've never been much of a phone person, though. I'd much rather speak with someone face to face. I think it'd take many many phone conversations to ever be sure I was into the other person (of course much less to know that I wasn't). I really need to meet personally to know how I really feel about it. Chemistry is important.

With an attitude like that 0G you ain't gettin' laid ever, even if you bring your money. Best go and be a sad little king of a sad, little hill. If you don't like it here, you can leave, and you won't be missed. The trolls might take you if you suck up to them, otherwise save yourself some money on your power bill by turning off your computer and your lights and just hang out in a dark room talking to the guy in the mirror. This thread is about people being nice to each other and right now you're only thinking of yourself. You got nothing we need. Forget the gravity you're just a zero.

To the rest of the thread I apologize for speaking bluntly. I resent rude behavior in a man it cheapens him in the eyes of the world as he does a disservice to himself. I wish no flamewar here. If Blackeyedgirl so desires I will leave the thread.

Hell there's politics everywhere. Douglas Adams described it really well:
"people are a problem"

Other than that it sounds good. You even had a lake to swim in. We have only one close event with a lake and it's too poluted to touch. Pirates and gypsies make for a lot of fun afterdark.

Can you be a gypsey and a pirate, because how could you choose between the two?

And was anyone around for Talk Like a Pirate Day? Because that was FUN.

COZEN

Reading through these massive threads, for the most part I can’t help but get the feeling that you good people ever seek to stumble into a four leaf clover, still fully expecting to come out of the encounter with a cracked skull.

I’m seeing a rapidly expanding network of impossibilities fueled by mutual lacking of self-esteem. As one racks up yet another imperfect partner so grows the accumulated burden of failures which is dragged into the next relationship dance. At best sometimes the sex is good, at worst, which seems nearly always, folk hate themselves. Thus each succesive dance becomes more difficult than the last. Yikes, what a way to live.

I can’t feel that way, not for long anyway. Call me naive if you want to. If so, that tag’s a fair trade on sadness and depression, so I can take it. I prefer having fun when I dance and, for that matter, when I romance. When it fails, it fails, learn and move on, but why carry the crappy parts with you? They can only have a negative impact on the next person with whom you might want to connect.

Guess all I’m saying is based on that old cliché, tis better to have loved and lost.... Well, you know the rest.

Of course, the above sentiment is rendered hopeless by any relationship that is physically or mentally abusive. I won’t pretend to be able to speak to that.

Where are we hiding? Close as can be. Within ourselves, tied in there by the bonds of our failures. I guess the conjurer within me is able to see failure less as a bond and more as an event, which allows better control over it’s hold on me.

Enough about me. Anachronisms is nice.

Cozen: You have some really good points there. Emotional baggage is just that: a bunch of stuff weighing a person down. There are those who collect emotional baggage the way others horde material possesions. They keep this stuff fastened around their necks like one would a boat anchor, because it has intense sentimental value. We all have learning expereinces, but they aren't any good if we only dwell on what a drag it was to have and fail to learn the lesson. My father had some advice about the over accumulation of materail things:
"He who owns less, is less owned."
I think that applies to emotinal baggage as well.
It may not be easily done, yet it is possible to wake one morning and say to yourself:
"Today I'll travel light" and leave all that stuff behind and just get yourself a cup of coffee. If you happen to meet someone at the time that's great, otherwise you can atleast smell the coffee. Then again maybe someone will notice you and think:
"There is a person who seems comfortable with themself." Now isn't that an attractive quality?

People these days watch a lot more tv than two three generations ago. The result is they may get to learn things from sitcoms that 40-50 years ago no one would even talk about, but they also have these very unrealistic expectations. In tv land no one has bad hair day unless it's essential to the plot. If a person is grouchy they are always grouchy, not becuse they are having a headache. In real life these things happen all the time, and they are not part of some great space alien conspiracy. In tv land everyone is physically attractive and if they aren't then they are in small minority. It seems almost a given that a lot of people programed by tv will have self esteem issues.

Maybe this is why so many teenage girls automatically start hating themselves the moment they hit puberty. How are they ever going to measure up to the latest supermodel?

To the thread: bear in mind that I'm speaking in a general sense. If you have realistic expectations, no self esteem issues and no emotional baggage then you should have no reason to be insecure and take offence, because then I wouldn't be talking about you then would I? If you are quick to rush to your own defence, bite your tongue for a minute and look in the mirror and then close your eyes and really look inside yourself.

Up until a few days ago I would have argued this age old point with you until I expired from lack of oxygen. As far as I was concerned it was far better to have never loved at all...only now am I starting to reconsider that. I've somehow managed to fit months of healing into a day or two. I won't question it (against my nature) but just accept it instead. Now, to keep it from slipping away in short order as it usually does. Wish me luck ;D

Good post, cozen. You definitely nailed many of the things I've let get the better of me.

Well in the SCA you can be both. You can have two entirely separate personas or you can combine them. Everyone gets to create theri own back story. So let's say that you were a gypsy who got pressganged into the navy and then you jumped ship and fell in with a bunch of pirates. There you go, you are now a gypsy pirate.

REALLYKAYLEE

yeah! i remember talk like a pirate day! that's when i realized i wasn't the only person in the world to like veggie tales! (the only television show that makes me wish i was a carnivore)

also- that whole touching till they get the message thing- it can't be true. for one thing a relationship can't totally be based on physical contact and using it as a way to initiate something just ensures that it will play a huge huge role in the relationship.

plus if that's true i should have a freakin' fan club. me and my guy friends are REALLY close. it's annoying when it's perceived as anything more than friendship but only outsiders make that mistake. *sigh* that's what i get for being a comfy theatre person anyways.

also- i imagined that the name would be obvious- "hidey-place"

i came.
i saw.
i read all of the hidey place threads.

It doesn't have to be touching. Just make it blindingly obvious if the guy seems unmoved by subtlety. Chances are they are afraid to misread your signals and so assume you're just being friendly.

I've found there's no SCA Kingdom for my county (not surprised), but there is a county not far from here that belongs to one. I'll have to check it out.

Wow. Surprised this thread got so long, so fast, without my noticing. Once I read all this, I'll chime in with my thoughts or whatever later.

LMD I gaurantee you are in a kingdom if you are in the continental US and Canada. Australia and New Zealand has their own kingdom. Europe and the middle east have their own kingdom. It's just a question of which Kingdom. So where are you located?

Backwards hell hole, my muscular buttocks, New York state puts you damn close to the holy grail: the Pennsic war, the largest event in the entire US. You are in the Shire of Blackwater within the Kingdom of Aethelmearc. The Kingdom is like your state. The shire is like your town.

Here's your kingdom webpage:

and here's your shire webpage:

BLACKEYEDGIRL

I leave for a day and look what happens! I am on a shit dial up connection as the 'rents house so this will be short.

XG: WTF? What did I ever do to deserve to be at the top of your bitch list? Hell I agreed with you on the blunt honesty even if it was painful and stuff. Damn, I can't wait til you fire on me. Bring it on!

ScorpionRegent: Love, no one is leaving this thread. I am not the boss of this thread. I will only ask the truely trolly to leave. Cos I don't want to wield my thread creating power in that sort of way. Sheesh! Share and Enjoy, lovely HGttG refrence my friend, 42!!

Everyone: Okay, this thread is fun and silly but also serious at times. We may get off track, cos, well this is a completely random thread. So I appologize to those of you seeking cohesive thought!

I thought of a dating service name to cover the land of Whedonites:
Whe-date: Cos Joss got into it to pick up chicks.

Sections:
Love's Bitches (Buffy section)
Send me an Angel (for the Angel fans)
The Heart of Gold (for the Firefly fans)

People should be able to register to all 3. I wish I had web skillz.

Silly ad: SWF, 26, Blue/blonde, with Kaylee's laugh, Zoe's loyalty, Inara's sensuality and sense, and River's brains (a little bit of crazy too) seeks Mal with Wash's humor, Book's mystery, Simon's brain, and a touch of Jayne's sentimentality. For Shindigs, Capers, and nights in one's bunk. Must look good in tight pants and browncoats. Niskas or henchmen need not apply.

Just to keep up with the Joneses: WHORE

-BEG, who loves her little frankestein monster of a thread.
