Hi people!

About a year ago or something (maybe it is less) i saw a thread on another message board. It was called "serenity trailer released". I went in and downloaded the trailer. "hmm" i thought to myself. Another scifi attemt at scoring in money because starwars is successfull. Didnt really think much of the trailer. But it looked decent enough - and i like action movies (it looked just like an action movie from the trailer). But somewhere along the cource of time i forgot about the movie. Maybe because i didnt see any ads for it. But then it was released and i went and saw it.

I didnt understand anything. Was this the same movie? I was just so completely blown away. To say it mildly: i loved it. And it was after that i learned that it was a sequel to a tv series. But, i have never been to found of tv series, so, dumb as i was i had no expectations to the series. But i thought that since i loved the movie i should see the series.

And now to the confession; I downloaded it. Friday came and i opened up "serenity.avi".

My first thought when watching this was that book and Simon+river was here. When seeing the movie i got the impression that Simon and River was new to the crew (i didnt hear the line "8 months you have had her on my ship" the first time i saw it). I also didnt think about book. But i was glad that these where all present in the first episode. I continued watching and suddenly i had seen all 14 episodes in one take! I honestly couldnt stop it.

i woke up saturday with a really bad feeling. I had downloaded this masterpiece! Why oh why. I got really mad at myself and instantly ordered 2 dvd sets of firefly. One for myself, and one which i'll probably give away to someone. I got the set and watched the whole series again. Now i've seen the whole thing 3 times. I can honestly say that i've never seen anything like it. I just......for once(!) i really FELT something for the caracthers. Most of all probably Simon and River. I even had tears in my eyes several times durring the series. E.g when River is about to be set on fire and Simon gets ready to "go down" with her. Durring "out of gas". And of cource when River has her "goodbye" speech in "objects in space".

Looking at myself i can really understand why neither the movie, nor the series was an success. I'm thinking; how do you market it? I cant come up with a good way.

Now just a few things on my mind;

1) There is one thing i dont like about firefly. But luckily you can just look away from it. I've heard that there is 6 months between firefly and serenity. And since Simon has been there for 8 months in serenity that must meen that the series takes place over 2 months. In my imagination when i see the series its at least 6 months. 2 months just dont make sense in my head :)

2)Movie spoiler ahead.

I've read that alot of guys where really upset about killing of Wash. Well....i cant really say i was. Dont get me wrong, it was sad as hell. But i felt that if you where to kill one of it should be him. He had just had his "moment". And the fact that there wasnt much more to explore around Wash' carachter. I was much more upset about Book. There was just so much more to be explored about his caracther (if ther ever will be a chance to of cource). He was really interesting, and one of my favorite caracthers in firefly.

In the end i'm just glad to have experienced the best series ever created. And that being miles ahead of any movies or anything else i've ever seen. Firefly is a sad story. Its sad because something of this quality is overlooked. But i guess every other day a new fan comes along. Well, here is one. So Hi everyone. Hoping to get a good discussion here and there with you! :)

What constantly amazes me, is that anyone...yeah I said ANYONE that watches the series has almost the same reaction. Be they Sci-fi fans or not.

Now, I not exactly clear on why it amazes me, but it does. It's not amazement of the fact it deserves such praise, just the way it affects people.

That being said, welcome aboard to the bestest little big boat in the verse!

Hey, welcome to the family; the more the merrier!

I understand what you're saying about the timeframe trouble. In "Trash" Mal says Saffron had been on his ship "half-a-year back"; that's six months between "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and "Trash" right there.

Frankly, I think this is just a minor brain fart on Joss' part; he was probably thinking of the events of the movie taking place eight months after the TV show and the line snuck in sideways on him. Hey, he was under a lot of pressure, and that "six months after" timeframe is never referenced in the movie itself, just in publicity materials.

So, it falls to fans to spackle in the gaps. I personally choose to discount both lines somewhat, and just assume Mal is given to approximation in his time estimates. After all, bouncing from planet to planet, adjusting between standard and local calendars...

I figure that the events of the TV series took place over 4-6 months, and the movie occurs about four months after that. Plenty of room for Tenessee windage, though.

Hi Andre83! I'm pretty new here myself, and while my road to Firefly isn't exactly the same, it's similar in the fact that I heard about the movie Serenity, and learned it was based upon a TV show that had a boatload of followers, and I was curious as to why I (being a decent SciFi fan) had never seen or heard of Firefly. Long story short, a friend told me about the movie and series, and said they were both good, so I got the DVDs, and never looked back! It's an incredible show, with incredible characters, and I can't recall anything like it in the scifi universe.

Welcome aboard! Sit down and stay a while!

Zoë: Shepard, isn't the Bible kind of specific about killing?
Book: Very specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy around the area of kneecaps.

Thanks for the welcome people :)

Rocketjob, i guess thats a fair way to see it. Makes more sense in my head that way :)

By the wat Jayhawk. Just noticed your sig. Love that line in the series, but the exact quote would be (i think);

Zoe: Shepard, havent the bible got some very specific things to say about killing?
Shepard: Very specific. It is however somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps

You may be right. Your way sounds more like how Zoe would say it. I just copied it from here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/quotes

I'm with you. And Joss, in what he said about this series being a "little jewel". I guess that explains why its so shiny!

GEDEON

Hi André,

I'm writing to you from Montréal, and my path is somewhat different. I was one of those that Fox angered when they took it off the air.

And I've met people to whom I lent my DVDs and did not catch on (One out of eight or nine...)

From day one, Book was my favorite caracter. So recently, I posted my thoughts to find out what the big deal was about Wash: Your thoughts on Wash.

So if you're interested, a couple of people were nice enough to share their views. And I, yeah, I don't know what kind of futur the crew has after the movie.
