Good, now I should only be talking to people who have seen the BDM.

The thing I wanted to ask all you enlightened browncoats is...
River becoming (more) sane: A good or a bad thing?

I couldn't help noticing that a while back some sick and twisted individual said they held no hope for a sequal/second series - they must have been one of those 0.1% adversely affected by pax, and thought they'd try to rape and kill our hopes and dreams!

*cough* Sorry, got a bit carried away there. Anyway, one of his/her points for there being no sequel was that River had become sane (or close to) and therefore may as well be dead like Wash and Book. (I paraphrased, they didn't quite put it like that)

I totally disagree with this... I think it's great that River will be more normal; it'll be like having a new character to explore and we'll get to see what she's really like (plus she'll still be a psychic and an awesome fighter). If she just spent the whole time being crazy until the franchise really did come to end, it would just get frustrating. Plus, they gave her a purpose on the ship - pilot: So I don't think her becoming saner is a bad thing at all, in fact, I'd say it makes me want a sequel even more just find out what River's really like as a person.

Yeah, so, that's what I think. This may have been discussed before but, if it was, I didn't see it and hey, what's the use of being a newbie if you can't rehash old subjects that have already been finished with? What's your opinion on this, one of my friends agrees with the evil anonymous reaver mentioned above, but I'm gonna guess (hope) that most of you agree more with my opinion than his.

Sane River; good or bad?

I totally agree with you, in that there is plenty left to make a sequel of, or continue the series (I'd be thrilled with either). Although I don't think River is going to be classified as "sane" any time soon. She may have resolved some of her crazy issues, but she still had part of her brain stripped, and all that. So plenty more crazy-River fun is to be had, is my guess.

I have also heard someone say (maybe the same person you're talking about) that with the deaths and with Kaylee and Simon hooking up, that also resolves things too much to continue, and I totally disagree with that. There is still LOTS of room for Joss to play with the characters and world. We still need to see the Blue hand guys, we still need to find out about Inara's past, see if her and Mal could ever come together, maybe learn Book's past (which could still be done...). I could go on and on. Killing off and/or hooking up characters has never been something that has stopped a Joss show in its tracks, and it won't be the end of Firefly.

So moral of the story: Keep spreadin' the word, and buyin' the DVDs when they come out, and we will have our incredible sequel.

oh I don't think she is, or ever will be 100%.
but Joss Whedon believes in character growth...
he likes for there to be actual changes,
that events have consequences....

so we'll just have to wait for the future comics and our eventual BDSequel to find out what River's future really will be...
and what Inara's past is
and how Kaylee will handle Simon's painful horrible death
(oops...sorry about that)

DONCOAT

The only thing that's changed for River is that she's no longer hiding the Miranda secret. While that seems to have been significant to her mental stability (she realized that "I'm all right!" once the secret was revealed), it's hardly the only thing she was dealing with.

We don't even know if it's the only secret she's been hiding.

But even if it was, there's still the aftereffects of the "stripping" (whatever that is) and slice-and-dice of her brain. She's still going to have trouble staying in control (she was overwhelmed by the Reavers' rage after leaving Miranda).

So, even if she's now "sane", she's still a unique character with a lot of challenges in her life. Plenty of room for further development.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

FOREVERSHINY

I think it would be a good thing; I just don't know if she'll ever be truly ... sane. Very close, now that she's "served her purpose" of getting the word about Miranda out to the 'verse, but who could be truly sane after going through all that?

A friend and I are actually going to be writing a post-Serenity fic, dealing with all of this. Dunno how it will turn out, but we shall see, won't we?

Cheers,
~ForeverShiny~

Can't stop the signal!
"No, Cap'n, I think it's shiny!"--Kaylee, o'course.
"Yeah, but she's our witch, so cut her the hell down." --Mal in "Safe."

RIVERGODDESS

And you know what? I'm sure Miranda isn't River's last secret. What about all the kids left in the academy? The blue hands dudes? The Alliance's reaction to Miranda being revealed? Inara and Mal? Shepard's past? Sooooo many more things were left in the open at the end of the movie! I'm sure that with the release of the DVD, and a strong browncoat support constantly hounding whoever to get a sequel in the air, we'll have our day. I'm very skeptical that this is the last we've seen of the crew of Serenity.
Well, with that said, I'm off to buy the Firefly soundtrack (already have Serenity)!
