DONCOAT

Okay, bear with me on this one...

I was listening to one of the Signal podcasts the other day, and one of their commentators mentioned the "eight archetypal characters". Now, I can't say I know what those eight archetypes are, but I found myself wondering: why only eight? After all, I thought, there are seven dwarfs, and those don't come anywhere near covering the gamut of human types.

And then it hit me: there are seven dwarfs, plus Snow White and the Prince -- that makes nine major characters... just like... you guessed it!

So, in the spirit of "Muppet Firefly", I give you my choices for the cast of Firefly... as Disney Dwarfs.

Snow White: this is a tough one, since there are two good candidates. River is a possibility: she's an outsider, a fugitive, pursued by the Queen (Alliance) and hiding among the dwarfs (and quite intrigued by them). However, I'm going to go with Inara instead. She, too, seems to be on the run (will we ever really know?) and is both aloof from and bound up with the others. There's also the sense that she's more respectable than the rest. Not to mention, gorgeous enough to make any mirror jealous. So Inara is our Snow. Which makes it obvious that...

The Prince: is Mal. Only our Cap'n is a lot more interesting and complicated than Disney's pretty boy. No matter. Onward and upward.

Doc: seems obvious, right? Wrong! I'm going with Book here. Doc was the wisest and most educated dwarf. Simon may have the larnin', but I don't see him as the kindly old family physician type. Book is much closer.

Happy: ah, at last an easy one. Can it be anyone but Kaylee?

Dopey: gotta go with Jayne here, though it's another oversimplification.

Sneezy: tricky. This is where I'm gonna put River. She has a physical malady that plagues her in spasms. (Who'd ever think that Sneezy would be the one to rise up to smite their greatest foe?)

Grumpy: is Wash. Oh, sure, he's our clown, too, but who's always Mr. Negative whenever anybody proposes a dangerous job? And who's always whining about Zoe being too tight with Mal, or refusing to start a family because it's too rough out in the black?

Bashful: Simon. Yup. Was anybody ever that pathetic at picking up on signals from the opposite sex? (Well, other than me, maybe?)

Sleepy: Zoe. She likes to doze off after bouts of connubial bliss, as we've seen. But more subtly: she'll lull you to dreamland before she blows you away. Something about those heavy eyelids...

So, there you have it. Call in the animators, I think we've got a hit on our hands!

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

It's funny you should mention the whole "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" analogy. One of our fellow fanifc writers, KaySky, actually dealt with this in one of the chapters of her Valentine's Day series. In the Book chapter, Book discusses the various kinds of love to a sullen River, which leads to Book having a strange dream involving Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I'll let you find the story and read for yourself whom she casts in the various dwarf roles.

Actually, when I hear about the Seven Dwarfs, I think about George Carlin's drug analogy for each of them.

Snow White (fairly obvious). Happy was into grass and grass alone. Ocassionally some hash. Doc was a connection. Sleepy was into reds. Grumpy, too much speed. Sneezy was a full blown coke freak. Dopey was into everything. Always had his arm out and his leg up. Any orifice would do. And of course, Bashful.

Bashful didn't use drugs, he was paranoid on his own. Didn't need any help with that.

"YES!!!I'm a man posessed by many demons....Polite demons that would open the door for a lady carrying too many parcels...BUT DEMONS NONETHELESS!!!! Yes. I have walked along the path of evil many times, it's a twisting, curving path that..actually leads to a charming plot garden, BUT BEYOND THAT EVIL!!!"
