MPHILLIPS

Did anyone else feel there was something not quite right about this series? It's hard to put my finger on it. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, but it just didn't have the Whedon sparkle that Astonishing Xmen has.

I just got them today and have read 2/3 of it....its just so hard to display all the wit of Joss in motion-less 2-D format (especially after we are so used to the tv-show and movie)...its still well worth the $10 and I got the last 3rd one so they had to re-order...the comic book store said a lot of people are buying it, so its obviously pretty popular...

Yep, he did. Astonishing X-Men (series 4) #1-12. It is suspected though that Joss had a ghost writer (daniel Way) do #7-12 because of the drastic drop in quality compared to #1-6. And like all Joss Whedon comics, they are good until the delays set in...... and continue on forever, and forever, and forever............. It started up almost two years ago, and its only on issue #12, for a comic that is supposed to be monthly. It's now bi-monthly, and isn't going to be around until February again (at the VERY EARLIEST). I personally thought the delays were because of the artist, but that was before I knew what Serenity and Firefly were, so when I saw the movie, I was like: "Ooohhh, so that's why it's been delayed so long". I'd suggest only reading the first six issues, and definitly NOT the last six.

RIVERGODDESS

For some reason, the 3rd comic with River on the comic kept selling out. I've read the first two, and will get the third tomorrow after specially ordering them. It was good to hear that they were selling out quickly, though! I go to just a relatively small comic shop, so it was very surprising. I think the comics are okay, I love the drawing, which is mainly why I like to get comics, anyway. Can't wait for more, though!

I find this rumor disgusting (I know you didn't start it, I'm not slamming you--OK?), especially given what I know about Mr. Whedon from all the interviews I've read.

Joss got his start in Hollywood as a script doctor, an absolutely painful job. Large portions of many movies (like Speed) are entirely Joss, but because he was brought in as a script doctor he was never credited. Instead, the hack who'd turned in the awful first draft and then hired Joss to make it gold got all the credit.

Once Joss started his own series, he was always certain to credit the writers under him, even for work work that he'd done. The Buffy and Angel writers are always pointing out scenes that Joss had written uncredited. A lot of the best stuff in the Hugo Award-winning episode "Conversations With Dead People" was written by Joss, but he never received any award because he gave all the credit to the other writers.

With history of crediting others above himself, I find it impossible that Joss would hire a ghost writer. If someone else had written those comics, Joss' name wouldn't be on them. I haven't read any of the Astonishing X-men series, but if there is a drop in quality, it (and the delays) are most likely due to the production of Serenity. Joss' words and actions have time and again shown that he would never take credit for something that wasn't his.

There is an obvious drop in quality in Astonishing X-Men. Though while Whedon may be above practices of credit-hogging, Marvel on the other hand is not. I could easily see Marvel making sure Joss' name stayed on the book even if he were getting help in any amount, for sales purposes.

IF there WAS a ghost writer, it was because Marvel wanted one, and got Joss to give him the storyline and write it. If you do read them all from start to finish you WILL notice a huge drop in quality, especially after #7.

ACG2002

Going back to the Serenity comics, don't know about XMen, but the miniseries were cowritten with someone else. Maybe Josh provided the plot and the other guy did the rest (He was certainly busy with the BDM and everything to involve too much).
SPOILERS AHEAD

Things I did not like in the comics:
-The blue hands are easily dispatched and replaced without further comments. I just assumed that they would be tightly related to River's past and not simple Alliance hunters or whatever.Plus there were bond to be more than two (2 by 2...) They don't receive the proper importance in the book.
-Inara's rol. She basically tries to leave fast, get hurt at Mal's comments and goes away to cry. I expected her to do something more. She is typically Mal's sensibility as much as Book is Mal's sense.
-Lack of depth. Given that the comic was clearly within continuity, I'd expected more of an episode (and after OiS that is expecting a lot) that a pointless confrontation against an old villain. Of course, that gives entrance to the BDM villain and everything, but ... Plus it remains to be explained how the Alliance knew about River's actual whereabouts.
-Finally, the art was terrible. It started ok, even though it was obvious they were simply copying pictures, but at the end it sucked. I'd rather had a less photographic effect and more effective storytelling (you out there MPHILLIPS?)

What I liked about the comicbooks:
-The no-inked look of the art
-All the covers
-Parts of the dialogue (like River's "I hate that color in you" or Wash's "It is my kind of stupid"; very Whedonesque)
-Mal's evolution towards his emotional state in the BDM and his very good characterisation.
-That there was this comic. Anything Firefly is dearly welcomed

Cheers,

Cristina

I disagree completely,
it still had Joss' wit and his imagination, just because some people didn't like the whole 'Danger Room' story line doesn't mean it wasn't pure Joss.

What could be more pure Joss than the Danger Room being a girl with super powers?

It is ALWAYS a girl with super powers! LOL

And I don't think for one moment that Joss would put his name on someone else's work.... on the contrary, it is clear from Buffy that he would give the other writer the credit even when the over-all plot, character development, AND best jokes were all his.

As far as the Serenity comics go, I loved them:
tied in a character from Firefly's pilot,
set up a joke (about grenades) for Serenity the movie,
and told a fun story in only three episodes
(which is very short)

I'm sure something longer would have been more satisfying, but personally I think these are a treasure.....I loved them and I'm grateful for them,
I'll be thrilled to get the ones they plan to do in 2006!

I'll tell you whats wrong with the comic...Dobson is a big indecissive pussy in the pilot, that SIMON got the drop on... (he deserved to get shot in the face) and in the comic he's some cold as ice, hard as nails, killer type. Yeah Right.

I haven't read any of Joss's X-Men comics but I found the Serenity comic to be very two dimensional because I thought that the character and story development just wasn't great.

CHRONICTHEHEDGEHOG

Emma Frost started talking like Spike for the second run, I can't believe for a second Joss decided to change her speech patterns so dramatically after he'd got them dead on beforehand. It read like someone trying to emulate Joss's style by simply copying one of his other characters. I'd rather think that Joss had a ghost writer for a few issues to get it out than he failed miserably.
