If you have a look at the Box Office Mojo website, you will see exactly what is going on with the dismal promotion of Serenity. In the Netherlands this week, Harry Potter is on at 252 cinemas, Wallace & Gromit at 84, and Serenity at 12. That's right, only 12 cinemas in the whole country. And Fox's "In Her Shoes" will be on there next week at 80 cinemas.

In Germany, Harry Potter is on at 1,248 cinemas, Fox's "In Her Shoes" (which seems to be chasing Serenity around the globe) at 416, and Serenity at only 222.

So how can Serenity possibly make as much money as the others? It's like shooting a horse in the foot just before the race.

And where exactly are these cinemas located? Will the Serenity ones be mostly in tiny towns like they were in Spain?

Some people have said the promoters don't know what they're doing, but that's hard to believe. These promoters are Hollywood professionals working for one of the biggest, most famous companies in the world. May I respectfully inquire what on earth is going on here?

FREDEP

Right then, here's how it is....

Serenity is indeed playing in only 12 theaters over here..Why that is? Well first of all there's not a that big Sci-Fi market over here and even though Firefly was aired here, it's hardly knows among the general silly public, secondly, the movie was originaly scheduled for release in early october, but the theaters owners didn't want it then, and UIP had too many movies comming out around that time here..
With only 12 screens Serenity obviously didn't open high on the charts, it was the 12th film for the first weekend actually, however, when it comes to the screen avarage it was 4th, which could be considered quite shiny in a mudhole like this.

Of course that's shiny! And so is the Netherlands---not a mudhole at all!

Fredep, if it could reach No. 4 in screen average with only 12 cinemas, just imagine what it would have done at 80 cinemas, like Fox's "In Her Shoes" will do next week? No, it's not the Dutch people's fault for lack of interest in SciFi---they'd go if it were on at their cinemas, like they went to see Star Wars.

Will the promoters go back now to Universal and say, "Sorry, Boss! We released it in the Netherlands and Germany, but it didn't do very well---we told you it was useless!"

And Fox will be laughing.

It's heartbreaking...

PSOLARIS

What I don't understand is that there is obviously a fan base for this show...hence this website and the plethora of others that have Lord knows how many members signed up and discuss the show and the movie and the actors/characters, etc. And yet I feel they are deaf to our pleas and cries for this show. They KNOW we exist, but they still seem to try to kill the show. Perhaps this is naive of me, but if I were a big time executive producer, and I saw the fanbase out there, I'd definitely give something like this another look and another chance.

Every review I had read on the movie raved about the flick. I read somewhere that overall, the approval rate from critics was some 90%. (I don't remember where I read that, so the number could be different now.) Hell, it even got two thumbs up for heavens sake. I've been reading up on the reviews of the Firefly series, and again, most of what I read is positive. I know it's been hashed around and around on theories as to why Fox cancelled the show, but I still don't get it. Why oh why will these people not hear the deafening outcry for this show??

Will someone in the universe please hear our prayers???

Psolaris, everything you said is right, and I don't get it either. But they say that excellence brings envy, and envy is always destructive. It seems as if somebody never wanted this show to succeed in any form right from the very beginning, and it can't be because of Joss, because "they" have allowed his other projects to succeed. So maybe one or more of the Firefly cast, or someone associated with this project, has aroused the envy or wrath of somebody very powerful---who knows the power struggles that go on in Hollywood?

There's nothing that ordinary people like us can do about it except try to point it out, and I'm not sure that asking everyone to buy 10 copies of the DVD is the answer, noble and admirable as that is.

But since so many amazing Browncoats care so much about it, you never know what wonderful thing may happen...

Ordinary people can:

1. Buy Official Universal Serenity stuff
there are some links on this website's home page http://www.fireflyfans.net/

2. Go see Serenity on the Big Darn Screen! 10th week of Serenity and its hasn't left theaters in the US for 1 day. 10th week states:

AR AZ CA CO CT FL GA IA ID IN KY MI MN MT NM NV NY PA TX UT WA

And that doesn't count the Open-captioned versions of Serenity that show up on Sunday-Monday and Tuesday-Wednesday!

I'm going to see Serenity tomorrow. It came back to my area!

Keep an eye on your theaters! You do not want to miss out on one last chance to see Serenity on the Big Darn Screen!

US map of Serenity showings. http://imdb.com/title/tt0379786/cinemashowtimes?location=map

3. Buy Serenity DVDs, VHSs, UMDs for Christmas presents! I have.

It is not madness. It is love.

Well thanks for that, Anonymouse1---your cheerful enthusiasm is just we all need right now.

I'll go and see Serenity with my Chinese pals as soon as it comes to China...

Hey, Anonymouse1...that would have been cool too!

And discourage them from buying bootleg Serenity stuff. REAL Browncoats would not buy bootleg Serenity stuff.

Well, I guess the Browncoats in the Serenity Jossverse would.

But REAL fans of Serenity the movie/Firefly the TV show Browncoats would not buy bootleg Serenity stuff.

It's hard to ask them to save all their food money for a month in order to buy one "real" DVD---I can't do that. They've got to eat.

And of course I can buy them all DVDs as presents, and then my own food money will be gone.

Maybe the film companies could adjust their prices to suit the economies of other countries, then nobody would pirate. I guess it's a dumb idea...

Or maybe the promoters could put the film on at more cinemas, so lots of people could enjoy it very cheaply. Another dumb idea...

I forgot that the whole point of the thing is to make money, not to distribute works of art with the power to lift the human spirit.

That's what movies are: a tremendously powerful art form, and actors & directors & cameramen & scriptwriters are just as impressive creative artists as classical painters, sculptors or musicians. The whole thing is a creative, artistic endeavour, right down to the carpenters and canteen ladies.

It has the power to lift ordinary people out of their daily troubles and hard times---to awe and inspire them, make them happy. That's what Firefly & Serenity do---it's not just entertainment.

Sorry! Going all poetical there...I'll shut up now.

You can get the "real" DVD and invite them over for a showing on TV.

How about buy 1 and have them share it? Start your own Blockbuster video store.

Maybe when your friends "make it" they will buy the "real" DVD.

Yeah! And think of the volume.

Artists have to eat too. And so do distributors. Starving artists eventually die and then their work becomes expensive.

Do you know if the Big Darn Movie is actually going to show in China? I thought it wasn't because of the pirating problem.

You're right---it's never going to be shown here in China. It was only a small joke...
