What scares you folks? Firefly-related or not.

Those Alliance Cruisers really scare me. They look like Corporate Evil personified. Darth Gates' version of a Stardestroyer.

Some people's driving on the freeway scares me too. Especially a semi tailgatin' me when I'm in the slow lane. I'm always wonderin' if it's Archer tryin' to run me down cos I called 'im a "hack".

Today I was borin' folk on the IRC with some sea stories, so I figure I might as well bore the rest of y'all too:

Falling overboard. This was my worst fear. First off, if you don't fall off the back of the ship, there's a damn good chance you'll be sucked into a seawater intake, or into the ship's propellers. If not, well it's a great big ocean. If there didn't happen to be a helo in the air and somebody didn't see you go over... Of the dozen or so unlucky fuckers who went for a swim while I was there, they found maybe two or three.

Steam rupture. Second worst fear. I worked in the engineering plant. 1500 psi steam, 600 degrees. If one of those pipes ever ruptured -- well it'd only hurt for a second or two. Like bein' in a giant convection oven, 'cept you'd be "done" 'fore you hit the floor.

Fire aboard ship. There ain't no fire department to call when yer out at sea. YOU are the fire department. Anyone see that program 'bout the USS Forrestal on the History Channel? Worst loss of life from a single incident durin' the Vietnam War, and all due to a little electrical glitch in an A-4 Skyhawk's weapons system. 'Course the Navy learned quite a bit from the Forrestal fire, and sailors nowadays are much better trained to handle a fire at sea, but they're still gorram scary.

A "General Quarters" (battle stations) alarm, when you're sittin' off the Kuwaiti coast durin' the '91 Gulf War (anyone remember what happened to the USS Stark?). Actually, that's scary any time. Usually a drill, but could also mean there's massive flooding or fire somewhere. Or an Exocet missile inbound. "Broken Arrow" alarms are scary too. That means someone had an "oopsy" with one of the "special" weapons. "Special" means the ones that make noise on Geiger counters.

Bein' on the flight deck. Those guys (and gals) that work up there don't get paid near enough. Four and a half acres is a pretty decent-sized piece 'o real estate. Unless yer usin' it as a gorram airport. We lost a few guys here and there who wandered into someone's jet blast and got blown over the side. We had one guy get sucked into a jet intake (he lived, interestin' story for another time). We had another guy walk into one o' the props of an E2-C Hawkeye. That one wasn't pretty. An arresting cable snapping as a plane snags it is pretty ugly too. Steel cable 'bout as thick as yer arm, whippin' by at a good clip. God help ye if'n yer in it's way. (I got an interestin' story 'bout that too, and nobody died that time either).

The Feres Doctrine. This applies to any branch of the service, not just the Navy. Basically it states that the government cannot be held liable if a military member is hurt or killed due to negligence of military personnel. So, if some quack military doctor kills you on the operatin' table, or you're killed because some idjit accidently fired a Sea Sparrow into your bridge (yes, that happened), sorry 'bout yer luck dude.

Was unfortunate enough to witness some poor bugger get sucked into the jet intake of a Harrier about 5 years ago (of course, not as unfortunate as the poor bugger who got sucked in). ... might not necessarily be the reason why the cruiser is called dortmund, but this explanation is a good one for me:

dortmund is a city in germany, "dortmunder" means "from dortmund". in ww1 and 2 german warships were named after people or cities. hearing that the cruiser is called dortmunder directly increased a dark, horrible atmosphere for me, creating a picture of a big, hostile, terrifying warship in my mind.

Here is a couple for ya;

1: I have been riding motorcycles for 18 years without any major incident, mainly because I ride responsibly-Not like one of those less endowed twits on sportbikes, or a moron who thinks "loud pipes save lives". What scares me are the drivers of 4 (Or more) wheeled vehicles who just dont pay attention. Biggest personal threat to my life, aside from the time I was shot at.

2: The decline in social courtesy and people just not giving a damn about each other anymore. Living in Chicago most of my life I have only seen it here, but I cannot believe that it is limited to this city alone. The decline of the polite society concerns me, because eventually it leads to nothing good.

That would have to be my second greatest fear. I could live with losing my hearing, well, because I don’t generally like to listen to people anyway, but completely losing my sight would be devastating.

I’ve got pretty horrible eye sight as is right now, but with the wonderful little invention of contacts life is good. But I remember once, after a trip to New Mexico, my bag with all of my contacts and a pair of glasses was lost, and before I even realized it, I had thrown away my last pair of contacts. Because of the type of eyes I have I couldn’t get replacements for almost a week. That was the scariest damn week of my life! I couldn’t drive, could barley walk, couldn’t read anything until it was four inches from my face, I never knew who I was talking to, and, like you said Channain, no art. That whole week was miserable.

I ended up shutting myself away in my room, in the dark, allowing myself out only if I was going to the kitchen or bathroom. And when I got my glasses back, I cried.

And now, on a slightly more upbeat note, anyone get that laser eye surgery thingy and like it?

Ticks, creepy crawly bugs, you know the ones, segmented bodies a slimy sheen, like earwigs or centipedes. Or those bugs that you find in the dirt while gardening.

The end, imagine that it ends, you life is over and there is nothing beyond it. The think of every mistake you wont be able to fix, everything you’ll never get to take back, everything that you’ll never get to say. Once you’ve been alive for any length of time you’ve screwed up too much to every fix. It’s a comforting to think that there is an afterlife where you can fix your mistakes, where you can say what needs to be said, be forgiven and forgive. The idea that it isn’t there scares the hell out of me.

Then there is god, there is know way if there is a god. It is simply a matter of faith, but if follows that there is now way to know if god is really good. Think of the possibility that there is a god, and he, she or it is sadistic. Would put a lot in perspective right? Black Death, AIDS, cancer, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, genetic disorders (like the one that makes children die of old age before they his puberty) it’s not hard to get thinking like that if you haven’t had enough sleep or are philosophical. It is scary, more so even than the ticks.

Kayt, my cousin has had it done. her eyesight before was horrendous. thick lenses in her glasses, had to have a specific kind of contacts due to her prescription and I remember every handbag decision she made had to include space for contact solution, case and glasses. more than a year ago now, she went in and had lasik surgery and it has changed EVERYTHING. no contacts, no glasses, no squinting, which she did even with correctives. I think her eyes do dry out more often than they used to, but for the freedom of not having to haul around all that stuff (or worry about losing it ;) I think for her it's definitely worth it. she LOVES it.

thing is, I asked and she doesn't believe you can get adequate treatment with the $595 or whatever that's offered in the newspaper/mailbox ads. if you're going to do it, do it right. that means anywhere between $800-$2000 per eye. these are your eyes you're messing with, right?

I would do it except for two things. one, I'm certainly no miss moneybags, so saving for the real treatment would take time; and two, I really struggle with the thought of letting a laser beam get that close to my eye. I'm getting there, but it will still be a long, long, long, longlong while

One thing really bothers me about this incident that was never explained -- Why the heck did they use their Sea Sparrows in the first place? A carrier has no offensive weapons besides the ones on the planes. The Sea Sparrow is a defensive weapon, designed to shoot down incoming missiles or enemy fighters. Didn't anyone on the fire-control crew question the order to shoot them at a SHIP!?"

Holy crap! You saw that! Whoa, I'm sure that wasn't pretty. Our guy was real lucky. If you watch The History Channel enough you might see 'im. It was recorded by one of the flight deck cameras, and I've seen it replayed a coupla times since, in one of those "what not to do" trainin' videos. The guy was just be-boppin' along the flight deck, and wandered in front of an A-6 Intruder. Next thing you know, he ain't there, and you see feet stickin' out one of the intakes. He was real lucky 'cause of three things. One, the chinstrap on his helmet wasn't fastened, and it got sucked off his head and jammed up the turbine some. Two, the engine had been shut off (but it was still spoolin' down). And three, his pantsleg got caught on one of the plane's little antenna thingys that was near the intake. When they pulled 'im out, he was a little banged up and confused, but that was it.

The arresting wire thing:
I'd heard stories of them snappin', cuttin' people off at the knees or slicin' 'em in half. The one time it happened on our ship, luckily nobody got hit by it. An EA-6B Prowler was comin' in for a landing. As soon as it hit the deck the pilot went to full throttle (this is in case you don't snag a wire, you just fly right off and go 'round for another try). He caught a wire, and it held long enough that the plane slowed and the pilot let off the throttle. THEN it broke. The plane was going too fast for him to get it stopped before he ran out of runway, but too slow to get airborne again. He went to full throttle anyway, which kept the plane level long enough that everyone in it (it's a four-seater) had enough time to eject safely before it went into the water.
