DONCOAT

It's over... (Awwwww...)

I got my autographs on a nice large-format group photo of the cast on the Firefly set. In earnest, I can't imagine how tedious it must be to sign five hundred autographs over three or four hours, but the actors managed it. The line moved very slowly, even though we were asked to limit our conversations with the BDH to just technical things about the autographs. Not that anybody followed that.

The first of the Q&A sessions was Summer, Jewel, and Sean. Many good questions, but right now I'm too exhausted to remember them all. Except one, since I asked it. I wanted to know what Summer thought her future in ballet might have been if she hadn't injured her foot. She was reluctant to answer -- "I don't like to think about that much." But she did anyway. She had progressed to dancing lead roles in a local company, and was just about to audition for the Houston Ballet, one of the best companies in the country. But that dream ended with the injury. Sorry I made you relive that, Summer.

She said that one of her childhood friends always dreamed of being an actress, and now dances with the Houston Ballet -- just the opposite of Summer. So they get together and fill each other in on the world they missed out on.

Next came the final Q&A with the full cast (plus the twins from the movie), with Nathan holding the spotlight as usual. More great questions and answers... and then...

Nathan introduced Joss! The place practically caved in, the standing ovation was so loud.

Joss joined them for the last half hour of Q&A. No, there's no news about any new live-action Firefly/Serenity. Same story: wait and see how the DVDs do.

After a question about whether he was a frustrated actor, Joss told about his guest appearance on Veronica Mars. He ended up saying that he'll never again be impatient with an actor that has five lines but asks nine questions about it.

He also gave some insight into what goes through his mind as he writes sad scenes (such as death scenes). He said he's in three states at once: totally cool and detached; totally absorbed in the story, and... gleeful about how he knows the audience will react.

The final treat was the uncensored Serenity gag reel, which is pretty risque in places. I won't spoil it, since a toned-down version is on the DVD.

Then it was goodnight and goodbye, and farewell to the new friends (and online friends that are now real-life ones). Tomorrow I'll be flying out, probably feeling rotten with the head congestion that's been developing. Arrgh.

Hope to be able to fill in more details of the Q&As after I get home, unless someone else does first.

Man, am I exhausted. Hope I can sleep better tonight now the excitement is over.

P.S. to that special subgroup of Browncoats: the picture has been delivered. Look for a direct response in the mail, but I can't say how soon or exactly what it might be

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

you are LUCKY!

I wish I could have been at the Flanvention. Darn school.

Anywho, thanks for all the reports! It's really interesting.

Side note: I hope the uncut gag reel makes it to the internet, somehow (like the extended Firefly gag reel).

Thanks so so much for your Flanvention report.
I'd like to think that if I was still living in L.A. I would have found a way to go.
Here's to hoping that there will be a BDSequel, and another Flanvention somewhere down the road.

Can't stop the signal!
"No, Cap'n, I think it's shiny!"--Kaylee, o'course.
"Yeah, but she's our witch, so cut her the hell down." --Mal in "Safe."
"Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home." --Mal in "Serenity" My all-time fav quote. Love it!
