If you can handle it... My roomate couldn't and didn't finish the book.

"Midshipmans Hope" by David Feintuch.

Don't get too attached to anyone other than the one main character. Every time you think "OK, this is a main plot guy who's gonna be around a while", WHAM!

In any other book series I've read these are the kinds of guys would still be around in book 15 and it's only the first of 6 books...
