After, um, several beers last night, it occurred to me that the Google homepage should really display a random Firefly/Serenity quote next to the search box. Just think of all the opportunities we are missing to introduce people to the series! Clearly a late night programming session was in order. Following are instructions on how to add the resulting BrownQuote module to your Google search homepage:

UPDATE: I just registered www.BrownQuote.com to make it easy to point others to BrownQuote. The latest version of the setup instructions will always live there. Also, after like the ten thousandth request, I added Buffy and Angel quotes .

Now, if only we could make that appear on *everybody's* Google page, not just our own...

It won't work for me. I get to the place where you enter the url, I hit GO and it tells me:

Your search http://poetryremix.com/brownquote.xml
did not match any feeds.

Please help!! My home Cyberguru is too busy playing Warcraft to help me.

nifty.

sorry i can't help, unless it goes wrong and then i somehow fix it (a cunning combination of swearing, 'well its worked before' and the old, lets press this button and see' mentality) I can't help others, hopefully someone will happen along to help you.

have you tried swearing?

gelassenheit,

I tweaked some settings - can you load the quotes now? Also, you may want to try using a different web browser and copying and pasting the web address directly from my post above. Is anyone else having problems?

Shiny!! :)

I added it to mine, thanks!

By doing this, does it mean that the quotes might begin showing up in the "Quote of the Day" section for mundanes, too? (hopehope)

I wish that were the case! It looks like the default "Quote of the Day" section comes from www.quotationspage.com. We could add Firefly quotes to that database, but since there are tens of thousands of quotes in there we probably wouldn't show up on the homepage more then once every few years :(. However, I've submitted the Firefly quote module to the official Google module directory, so if lots of people add BrownQuote we could get highlighted as a "popular" module, which might catch some people's attention...

RandonDan,

WooHOO, what a cool thing. More wonderful Firefly shinyness in my everday life! Thank you so much for making this work.

I use these quotes constantly on here, sending them in emails, etc. This makes it so easy, and there's a wealth of new ones for me.

I'll be sharing this with all of my friends!

It only works for me in Firefox, not IE. Huh.

The module directory is what shows up on the left of the screen when you click the "Add Content" link. Not much there yet though.

Thanks for the help! I got it to work in IE, but not Firefox. Gorram browsers!!!! Why do they all have to be so different?

So if we do this does this somehow spread the word about Firefly? I am such an ignoramus when it comes to the internet and computers and remote controls and how the defrost works in the car-yup i drive with the windows down in boston cause i am pretty deficient in the cerebrel cortex so use tiny words and explain to me whether or not this will help spread the word

Ha! This is so shiny. Totally made my day! Though, I'll probably get no research when I'm on google any more. I'll just be hitting 'reload' to get a different quote all day...

I did this yesterday and it was all very shiny but today I'm trying to open google and it says its redirecting, the blue bar flickers and it just stays the same, it won't load up.

I'm lost without google, does anyone know why its doing this? if I could get onto the page I could disable the quote thing but I can't even do that. any suggestions?

Charlie,
Hope everything is shiny again by now, but thought I'd let you know that you can always reset to the default Google homepage by clearing the cookies in your browser.

Great idea. It would be nice if others can see them though. Google should use a daily quote from a random user.

hi, thanks, I have done that now, didn't think of it myself but a friend did it for me. shame I can't have the lovely quotes though, I still don't know what made it go all kablooey, guess its just too advanced for my computer to handle.

those few days without google were awful though, I tried using the altavista image search and it was rubbish, all hail google...
