Music Scores - the best suited to the Film/TV.

Ok been spending a little bit of time listening to some classic sci-fi/film scores and it sorta got me thinking....

...If you listen to film scores out of context sometimes they work well and sometimes they seem extremely flat and aneamic...But it made me realise the better ones tend to evoke images of the film in question, and I began to wonder if this is what makes a Film Score great!

As an example - Raiders of the Lost Ark - now just a couple o' bars into that one, and I want to start diving about the sofa like there's a giant stone ball rolling after me, Y'know what I mean...

So any thoughts on what scores work for you in terms of when you hear them they make the 'ol hairs on the back of the neck' stand up, or it sends you right back to the first time you saw the film and the feeling you had watching it for the first time etc...

Just as a side note, I was never a huge X-files fan but I must admit that the Mark Snow score really evokes what the show was about. It's extremely eerie, creepy and haunting.

Any thoughts ?

I'd have to say Close Encounters of the Third Kind, you know...the tones that repeat over and over and over. Everytime I hear them, it reminds me of the final scene when the humans are playing to the alien ship and the alien ship plays back. Then they start playing notes so fast that it becomes insane!

Then at the very end, one of the humans does the hand sign equivalent to the music (and the music plays softly in the background) and the alien then does the hand sign right back and they're both smiling to each other as if they have a common understanding.

Goosebumps every time.

That's cool, and all, but not really the score of the movie, more of a plot point or even a "line" from the movie. Still, it's pretty evocative.

Believe it or not, that particular piece of music is part of the score, written by John Williams (who is the composer of every movie mentioned in this thread so far). This part of the score just happened to have more of a role to play in the movie. You can pick up sheet music to the score of the movie, and this is in it (I took piano lessons most of my life...my mother was a music teacher). And yes, it is very evocative.

Certainly the little ditty they play to the Aliens when they come down is very evocative, but aside from John Williams putting in a little nod to "If you wish upon a star" I can't remember the main score :( to Close Encounters of the third Kind. I'll have to watch it again. I remember the theme when they're trying to reach the mountain, though that stuck in my mind.

What do you think of Ennio Morricone's The Good The Bad and The Ugly

That is very evocative, it's just such a crying shame it gets abused in adverts n such, but even then images of the film come flashing into the minds eye.

...and of course Psycho Violins never quite evoked the same feeling after that film... Bernard Herrmann really did a number on that one.

Also a little honourable mention to Danny Elfman's Batman That's filled with such great menace!! It almost carries the whole film.
