I just found out that Chronicles of Riddick will become a trilogy. Yes, there will be 2 more movies in this franchise!

Remebering it being a disappointement, I decided to look up its stats on box office mojo. With production and marketing, the movie cost $140 mil. It earned $115 mil totaled worldewide; thus, it was -$25 mil in the hole before it was released on dvd.

I then did a search to find out how many dvds it sold. I still don't know. However, I found an article that said much like Serenity the dvd sales would determine its fate. I assume the dvd sales must have been satifactory for the studio to release 2 more films. But, it was not in the top 20 for dvd sales in 2004.

The studio responsible is ..wait for it...
UNIVERSAL!!

Well, for heaven's sake...we must have a bigger base than Riddick! Man...when Joss said to hold the valley, I had no idea it was gonna be like this...I mean, we're not down to eating grenade-apples, but still. God.

All we can do, I guess, is hold. Come on, Browncoats! Hold!!

Despite what the critics said, i enjoyed Riddick. sure it wasn't great, but i admired the fact that it was the first Sci-Fi movie in a long time that actually attempted to create a whole seperate and distinct universe. It was no Firefly 'verse, but i admired its ambition. i think that was also one of its faults, unfortunately for the minds responsible.
as far as how many DVDs it sold, I don't know exact numbers, but i do remember the talks about how its fate would be determined by how well they sold. if they are indeed going forward with the trilogy, I am happy. 1.) I enjoyed the first movie, it's about the only Vin Diesel movie that I enjoyed. 2.) It gives me more hope for our Serenity sequal. especially since Serenity had a much smaller budget and was about 100 times better. I'm hoping to pick up some more fans this week. i'll be screening the BDM at my place on the 52-inch for a couple of virgins to the 'verse.

also, where is this news about Universal going forth with the next Riddick?

Well, Vin Diesel always intended Chronicles of Riddick to be a trilogy. So I guess the movie made just enough money to warrant sequels. Keep in mind that they've had a couple years to get enough cash from dvds.

I too enjoyed it, but it's no Pitch Black.

Does that mean that there will be two more movies or just one? Isn't 'Pitch Black' the 1st movie of the series?

Anyways isn't Riddick already in charge of an evil army of darkness (although its a fairly lame and under equipped army in history of armies). Where do you go from that plot twist? Hopefully he tries to conquer the universe only to be stomped out of existence by the 1st Alliance like system wide government with a decent aerospace force they encounter.

You know I might even pay to see that guy fail and die...

yeah I gotta 2nd that...well its not QUITE as good as the Firefly verse, the universe David Twohy created was pretty interesting...I really can't wait to see what Twohy comes up with in the Underverse...

SF and Religion not getting along? Battlestar Galatica, Stargate SG-1 Season 9 and DS9 all come to mind. Each seemed to openly debate the whole Science Vs. Religion thing.

If DS9 was being made today, it would be canceled. It dealt with so many things that we're more sensitive about today. The first officer is a terrorist. There was the backdrop of a planet of spiritual people who were brutally oppressed. Preemptive wars against perceived threats. People’s way of life being changed by terrorism. Soldiers who are completely and unquestioningly devoted to their beliefs. An attempted coup to remove a democratic government. Exploration of social taboos. There would have been so much controversy and it could not have possibly made it past the second season if it was being made today.

Not to burst your bubble here, but pulling an "Adama" dont gain us anything.

It cost 105 million. Marketing costs aint taken in consideration when determining wheather a movie has made profit or not. So the budget was 105 mill.

In other words it made 10 mill over that. However, it had a bigger net loss then serenity because of the bigger budget (the cinemas etc takes some of the sales income).

It made it to number 1 on dvd, however i'm not sure how long it dwelled there.

About sequals, nope, nothing has been said. So there ain any sequals in the works. Maybe one day, who knows.

Oddly, the best bits of the film (The Ridicules Of Chronic, as a friend of mine calls it) are (mostly) those parts without any Necromungers in it. Those bits were very good. The rest was kinda so-so... but I enjoyed watching it nonetheless. Despite it just being Conan-In-Space.

CoR was always meant to be the first part of a trilogy, as I recall. No sign of any more chapters yet, though.

Kill the Riddick!!!!!

I'm sorry but this movie sucked. Yes, sucked. really really sucked. (((shiver))) really sucked. The only reason they are prolly even giving it any due is the name Vin Diesel. People will see a s-u-c-k-y movie because a "star" is in it. And sadly enough this is why they are so hesitant to give "Serenity" it's due. Hollywood wants a name it can push. And in this case, a big name did a big lame, (did I mentioned it sucked) movie.

The BDH's are not Big Names to the everyday movie goer. They are the Biggest Sci-Fi stars hands down. But they are not household names. Yet.

Let's face it if the Chron of Ridd. comes out people will say..."Hey, let's go see that new Vin Diesel movie." I mean even your Grandpa knows who Vin Diesel is. But you still have to explain what that Chinese shield thing is on your T-Shirt, or why you say "Shiny" all the time.

The title of this thread could easily be.

A great Sci-Fi epic VS Another (sucky) Vin-Diesel movie.

Wow, some people are really angry. I thought Chronicles of Riddick was a great movie. Not as good as Serenity, but what is?

Mind you, I've heard that the director's cut is way better than the theatrical version. I never got to see it in the theatres, so I don't know, but my cousin saw both versions and says the director's cut is way better. It explains way more stuff.

In short, I hope it gets a sequel. I hope Serenity does too. Sequels for everyone!! And one day our BDHs will be Big Damn Big Names. Hopefully everybody will still like them then.

I not sure if I understand you. Even without marketing, the movie made only a small profit in the theaters. It cost $105 mil and earned $115. So it only made a profit of $10 mil if you don't include marketing.

If you use the same standards to compare Serenity, then it was only -$1 mil lost. (Serenity cost $40 mil and earned $39 mil worldwide.) Usually, when they discuss sequels or even a trilogy, the movie earns a big profit in theaters and I pretty sure they do take into consideration the cost of marketing.

The sequels are:
Chronicles of Riddick 2: The Underverse
Chronicles of Riddick 3: Return to Furia

Here is a link discussing the sequels:

I too never saw it in theaters. i really liked Pitch Black, but Chronicles seemed so different from PB and was getting horrible reviews. But after seeing it on DVD, i decided i really shouldn't rely on reviews so heavily, because I enjoyed Riddick. the version i saw was the Director's Cut version. I've seen part of the theatrical version on HBO, and yes, the Director's Cut is much better. Explains a lot more and has slightly less cheesy dialogue.

I tink some of you are missing the shiney part of this. Pitch Black was a good movie but did not do all that well in the theater but do to DVD sales and a growing fan base (odd were have I heard this before) Universal made a sequel for it. And if you remeber "Vin" was not a big star at the time. At that point all he was know for was the guy who got shot trying to save that French kid in "Saving Private Ryan". So take heart Browncoats if Universal is thinking of greeniighting more Riddick flicks they may take a more kindly look as your and ours. That is id DVD sales are good enough (they are still suits after all)

I'd rather not compare Serenity to Riddick; its more comparable to 5th Element, imho.

Brazil. Terry Gilliam. brilliant film and so underated.

Riddick is an OK film but not a patch on Pitch Black. Serenity and Firefly owe a good nod towards Pitch Black with the style of cinematography and direction

Great Lost, or lost their way, sci-fi films / franchises.

Terminator. Proper violence as befits the job description. Later ones - Don't kill anybody / sickly sentimentality. Hmmph.

Buckaroo Banzai. But then the heavily mutated sequel, Big Trouble in Little China earns its own place in this list (or it would if it was science fiction).

Mad Max. Newer ones may be faster, but Toecutter's gang's eight-valve bikes were way harder. Sequels a bit camp and falling foul of cute urchin / sensitivity syndrome, and the genius who thought it was a great idea to put Tina Turner on that side of the camera. Future Fox executive material. On the plus side, Virginia Hey was cool even before she went blue.

Escape From New York. Classic case of should-have-done-it-then-left-it-well-alone.

The Matrix. Ditto, although that is a bit big-budget to be legitimately included.

The Last Starfighter. Mrs Furillo and her funny teeth.

Dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk. Dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk. Flash! Ah-Ahhhh... More of that could have been great, and it had that weird Italian look to it. You normally only see that sort of thing in shops that sell those big ornate beds with mind-boggling headboard design ideas, usually in white plastic. With built in lights, chrome and Palm trees.

Dune. Another big-budget interloper and sporting the Italian look. Everybody so busy panning it they miss the point that it's really quite good. Big stuff like that, you'd really only want to trust to Peter Jackson.

Robocop. Original was fab, the rest sort of ran out of steam. Then they do the insulting "stick any old actor in the sequel as the main character, no one'll care" thing.

Predator. The Predator 2, then ...v Alien. Going to hell in a handbasket seems an appropriate phrase. If they weren't dead, surely the next would have been ...meets Abbot and Costello.

"Big Damn Dumbass"
