I think I know why Firefly has such a big fanbase. Most episodes have a scene with the whole crew sitting down and eating dinner together, laughing, joking and telling stories. A very family like atmosphere which sets the tone for the whole series. I personally like that. It makes me adhere to the characters as a whole and I care about them as a family as well as individuals. In a society where family is no longer important this is why Firefly is Shiny. For me I see the crew of Serenity as a surrogate family.

Is this what turns you guys on to Firefly?

The surrogate family theme is one of the things I like about Firefly, yes. Joss Whedon likes to say "bring your own subtext", and all of his shows have been about surrogate families (replete with enemies as well). I think folks who lack certain family aspects in their life would find the show particularly appealing for that reason. Oh, and also that the entire crew (family) is eccentric, well-spoken, witty (OK, damned funny) and darned attractive to look at. The diversity of the crew helps with the appeal as well. Everyone can find someone on Serenity they particularly connect with. I've connected with just about all of them, with one of those "oh, wow, I've felt just like that!" moments. Yes, even Jayne. There, I said it. I've admitted it!

Nice to hear Hera. Yep im one of those people who lacks family in my life. So Firefly fills my heart. People could easily say 'thats sad a TV show as family' but in a society where the next man on the street does not aknowledge his fellow human being and family values are dissapearing, stories bringing people together are important.

Firefly brought me to this forum. I have been a member of many forums and even hosted my own forums but this forum is the most friendly I've ever been to :) We are all here for the same reason and unlike other forums people have no pretence about who they are and no bad attitude.

No worries. I waffle all the time. You know, this is the first site I've joined (OK, I lied, I post to the XTC band site sometimes, but they can be kinda pretentious -- hmm, XTC. 1984. Showing my age here . . . ) I love the people on this site. So kind, so supportive, talking about important things. Well, all the important things that Joss and the Firefly 'verse have shown me, but important to me.

I'm constantly honoured and priveledged to be a part of this community. What I read here makes me feel less crazy than I mostly do in my travels amongst friends and family. It's interesting because my Firefly family has grown to encompass my flesh and blood friends, as one of them was a fan, and she bought the DVD Tuesday, and we all met over at her house that evening 'cause she had a plasma screen TV and we had a viewing for 5 souls who had'nt seen the movie in the theatre (3 were ex-US Army, who enjoyed it very much, and coming from an Air Force background, that resonated with me). We had a blast, ate veggie lasagna and drank mulled wine and just enjoyed ourselves. Family is a loose term here, and I enjoy that looseness very much. I was so grateful, I gave our hostess an extra copy of the TV series DVD I had (of which she had never seen the unaired episodes -- SCORE! I was so pleased to be able to give it to her). Life is good today. Thank you for the thoughtful post that got me thinking along these lines. SWEET!

Very nice sentiments Hera. Sometimes I never know if to start a thread or not, especially because I've only been here a short time, thinking what I post has no relevance but I'm glad this thread made people think what Firefly brings to their lives.

Showing people eating together is a concept that is often used to create an "on screen family" feeling. Here a few examples that came into my mind spontanously:

- In "Enterprise" Archer invites certain crewmembers for a private meal every now and then
- The opening of the early 90s Comedy "Roseanne" featured the cast sitting around a table and eat
- In Alien I the first thing they did after the awakening is a groupe meal
- Star Trek V showed them sitting around a campfire in a classic eat-and-sing-a-song moment

I could go on forever

But, honestly, it was never as believable as it is in Firefly.

Of all the great things about Firefly, this one is perhaps the most important to me. Jewel Staite mentions this in an early interview ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/firefly/video/jewel.htm). sadly, it was one of the key elements that was somewhat overlooked in the movie. It was there, but took a back seat to the Reaver-slaying and space battles.

The really interesting thing is the way the 'family' atmosphere of the series seems to spill over into the fanhood, as many here have implied.

Welcome home!
