This could be the most depressing thing I've ever read in my life:

Quote:

But, you know, we'll never make Firefly again, because that was a thing that existed and is now gone. And Serenity isn't Firefly, and whatever comes next won't be, either. But I would love to tell more stories of this universe and to hang out with these people on and off for the rest of my career.

Of course, I knew that deep down. But it doesn't make it any less of a gut punch to see Joss actually say it.

...

Think I'll go back to bed now.

Great interview, thanks for the link!

You know in your hearts Firefly would never have stayed the "way it was" for very long. There are some shows out there where the characters and their positions never change, same stuff different day, year after year. Joss didn't steer any of them. If the show had never been cancelled, if we were right now enjoying season X without a break, it would still not be the Firefly on the current DVD set. That's how it would be, and that's how he meant the words in that quote. Sure, the name of the show would be the same, but everything else would be subject to change without notice. It's called story and character development, and staying in the same, comfortable place for very long was never going to be an option in the Whedonverse.

But then all of those stories would have been told. Now I know they never will be.

That's the show I fell in love with, and that was the whole point of holding out hope. Guess it really is gone forever.

Looks like there's no more future for a Firefly fan like me in this 'verse. Maybe it's time to take off the ol' browncoat.

I think you'd have to be a bit silly to hope for the TV show to return, the movie(hopefully movies) and comic books are now where the stories will take place. TV show would be too troublesome, the actors have moved onto other things and probably couldn't commit to a TV show.

The best-case scenario is that the DVD is such a spectacular, monster hit that we get to make another movie. Then, we get to make another movie. After three movies, we're all very tired. After Serenity: Revolutions, we feel like we've played it out. And then we make another series.

...But I would love to tell more stories of this universe and to hang out with these people on and off for the rest of my career.

Well - apart from the scary reference to the Matrix sequels - thats pretty positive in my book.

of course, my book is very short and full of spelling mistakes...

Just a fun update. This article was posted on Whedonesque, where Joss commented on it:

“Whitney -- really fun to talk to, but she made one vital mistranslation of our talk. Since we all know one wrong word can completely change the angle of a story, this time I'm gonna step in to head off confusion right away. The exact words I said to her were "my sad but shapely butt". You can see how I wouldn't want that misinterpreted. My work, maybe, But not my fine fine booty.”

Whedon said a while ago that he has two sequels in his head, but nothing on paper yet and would like to do a trilogy. Don't think it's a well publicised interview since it was on some light hearted entertainment show which is shown at 2am on ITV in the UK @_@

When he says series though, I think he'd mean Firefly TNG kind of thing. It'd be awesome if Serenity had changed hands :) or it could just be a whole new crew/ship all togther in the same universe.

Lots of fans are interested in Firefly:TNG, but you'll have to count me out of that one.

It's this crew or no shipping out for me.

In fact I'm sorta indignant when someone mentions that. I love this crew. Mal loves Serenity. I can't see anyone loving Serenity the way Mal does.

I'll be happy for all ya'll that do like that idea, if I can, but it's certainly not for me.
Don't think I'm alone in this, Nathan Fillion has said he'd prefer no one else be Mal. I agree with him.

Commenting on this article though... Joss is saying lots of stuff right now, and so are lots of other folks. Money will be what really talks. We'll just have to see what happens with the DVDs.

River: I didn't think you'd come for me.

I agree. I didn't really take the interview as a death sentence at all. It obviously won't be Firefly, because of the changes from the movie, but also the rights are tied to the name "Firefly." Hence, the reason they used "Serenity" for the movie. I haven't seen the contract for the original TV series, but I'm sure it's tied to the name moreso than the characters or the story.

It could come back as "Serenity: Whatever" to TV and totally circumvent any reference to the series named "Firefly."

Last, but most importantly, Joss' interviews tend to be laden with sarcasm. To say it's dead seems to be something Joss would say, whether it was truth or not.

I've only been a Browncoat since May-ish, but I feel good about the chances of Serenity/Firefly making a comeback in some form.

Call it newb enthusiasm, but I ain't givin up!

Good interview! Interesting that Joss mentions seeing Batman Begins in a theater. I wonder if they showed the Serenity trailer. I know mine did. Wouldn't that have been crazy funny?

I looked at this interview and I was really excited by it 'cause it was Joss himself saying what I really wanted to hear. There are plans for a second and third movie...what he didn't say is that depends on cashflow, but we all knew that. This wasn't what interested me though...it was the whole...after Serenity: Revolutions (I enjoyed that refrence throuroughly by the way) there was a chance for a series...The part that made me sad was him sayin it wasn't gonna be "firefly" but it wasn't that it wasn't gonna be a new cast or a new story...what he meant was there were pieces missing that were taken away by Serenity...what we'll have will be different but good God it'll be the same story with most of the same characters...I just wanted to throw up my perspective of this interview and hope to take away some of the downtrodden feel of some of what he said and put a positive spin on it. Hope it helped.

Well, for whatever tiny crumb it's worth, I loathe Buffy/Angel. I don't thereby consider myself an unqualified Whedon fan, but I do approve of where he's gone with the one creation of his of which I am a fan. Everyone's mileage is guaranteed to vary, of course.

I think Joss understands that his TV program was so clever and inventive that it would be almost impossible to sell it as a single movie except to those who were devoted to the show. I came to Firefly thru the movie anmd I must admit that the two are not the same. Hopefully w/ the DVD people will become devoted to the movie---Not the series--and this will save the concept. I do hope that the suits at Fox go to that special place in Hell reserved for child molesters and people who talk in theaters--because the wrecked an excellent TV program which will not return

No!

No no no no!

You don't think studios would be able to get away with little tricks such as this, do you?

Universal bought the movie rights from Fox; not the television right. Money changed hands to make our tv show into a movie. That's how it works. "Serenity" was what Joss wanted to call it, not "Firefly: The Movie".

RE: DVD sales, I just thought you would all like to know that Serenity DVD (Widescreen) is currently ranked *** #1 *** (as of December 26, 2005).

While I think this is fantastic, for the first week sold, I still think it's a shame that the numbers just were not there for the theatrical release. It really was one of the better movies of the year.

Well, here's hoping that we'll see future adventures with the crew of Serenity!
