Hey ya'll.

I was just wonderin' how you mix up your everyday speech with some real shiny slang from the 'verse.

PIE!

Well....I use a lot of different vernacular ...like instead of "oh really? Tell me about that." I'll say "shiny, hows about some narrative on it"....and I seem to have dropped off the g from every word that has an "ing" ending. Plus, I never used chinese before!

I appear to have lost the 'be' that used to come before 'cause. And almost every 'g' I ever knew...

Tell the truth though, it was on the cards since I dropped english lit. 'Tis shiny.

i never realized i did until...

i showed my new college friends the first couple episodes from firefly...my one friend turned to look at me and said "you know what? you talk a lot like Mal..." "I'm like reall? I reckon its just all the time i spent watchin em"
Chinese cursing...gorram is every other word.

Thank you Firefly...gave me quite a way with words...even if you are the reason i failed english class :-P

My speech is as it has been and will continue to be, fluid.

I still say thank you in Italian and I’ve not been there since high school, yet something I picked up yesterday could already be gone. When it comes to Firefly:

"FAY-FAY duh PEE-yen" is the only Chinese that really stuck with me, but it’s hard to work it in. "Dong-ma" pops up very occasionally.

Various forms of, "Holy mother of god and all her wacky nephews," work their way into my speech quite often, but always in English.

"Shiny" I think, though am not sure, I used before I ever saw the show. No idea where I picked that up. "Gorram" and "ruttin" both pop up occasionally.

Firefly speak is destroying my life. I live in NYC and everytime I say things like "shiny!" even little old grandma's size me up for a mugg'in.

I'm from the South so I never pronounce the "g" on "-ing" words! But I do find myself sayin' gorram, shiny, and ruttin' alot! Before I made my boyfriend watch the series he gave me funny looks but its shiny now!

As for the Chinese, I do actually use it ever once in a while. Just the short phrases like "dong ma?" and I'll sometimes use "gos se", "luh-suh", and "swai".

For Christmas my boyfriend/new fiance bought me the book "Finding Serenity" which has a really shiny unofficial Chinese glossary from each episode of Firefly. If you don't already own it, well, you should be shot.

I am Joss' bitch!

"Gorramn" has all but replaced "God Damn" in my vocabulary (Yes, Gorramn IS spelled with an "N". I have the Official Visual Companion to Serenity!)

I will on occasion swear in Chinese, (Mostly "Ching Wah Tsao Duh Liao Mahng" and "Ni Ta Ma De Tien Shah Swah Yah Duh Ren Duh Goy Soh") and I will also say "Dong Ma" and "Tien Shao Duh" on occasion. (I plan on learning more).

And Shiny... Well Shiny is used about as often as Gorramn nowadays.

Oh, and "G" is gone too.

I call my little sister "Mei Mei" without thinking. I use gorram, shiny, and every swear word is now in chinese. Ai ya, Ta ma de, etc.

I'm from the south as well and they already talk like folks in the 'verse, so some of it is natural (I grew up in Alabama and Texas, so I've covered the old south and the wild west to boot), but I have purposfully replaced Goddamn with Gorramn to help me cut down on the swear words. Ruttin' also finds it's way into the vocab - same basic idea. I don't really say shiny that much; it's still too awkward, but I do find it a mighty likable word.

Yeah, I find myself using 'gorramn' quite a bit. Here's the weird (sad) part -- I'm an English major. D'oh.

I can imagine no better reason to learn an accent, dialect, or simple word by word linguistic corruption

Thought I should add:
I'm from Maine, so the "g"s were already gone about half the time anyway. (You southerners think you have exclusive rights to a lack of g, gorramn snobs.)

About the only way we don’t talk here is the way you see us talk in movies, though I suppose there are some exceptions to that far north of civilization, I just don't go there often (ever.)

I've just recently gotten hooked on Firefly, so I haven't started saying things out loud yet. I am getting to the point where I think to myself in terms from the 'verse. Shiny is a particular favorite.

I try to use shiny as much as possible but it doesn't feel natural yet, I think it will. Gorram is gonna take some work though. I do find myself randomly quoting the show though. Today for example my friend was lookin at somethin at the mall and he was gonna stop again to look at it and I just naturally said "Keep walkin preacher man..." Also there was a quiet moment where my friend and I were just standing there staring off into space (we're not stoners I swear) and I just randomly said...and we shall call this land...this land...and we both bust out laughing, anyway I used shiny a few times today but again not as natrual as some other things. I use Frack from Battlestar Galactica pretty easily (its much better 'cause its not as bad as the actual word and no one ever questions it). But yeah that's pretty much the extent of my browncoat speech.

-Dan

Ain't that just shiny? (yes add one to the tally)

in a similar way, after watchin the extended gag reel that other day - everybody find that post and watch it, takes a while to load but don't be put off, 'tis heaven sent - I found my self using Nathans 'frick', actually the words were 'frickin'frick-fricketyfrick'

I think its replaced 'fek' in my affections.

the other day I found myself yelling 'oh! look at the pretties' accross the shop.

I've also started mumblin 'baboons ass crack' at the idiot customers, in english or chinese, depending on how well I think they can hear...
