They are having a somewhat heated discussion when they go into Serenity's sick bay and Mal takes a shot of some kind- anyone know what that was about?
Did I miss something?
I've watched Serenity seven times now, and I still have no clue...

BTW, there is no doubt now. It's the best movie ever made. The subtle looks and gestures, the incredibly detailed references, even Newman's score (second only to Greg Edmonson's score, currently available only in alternate Joss universe 'B'- somewhere in the back of my mind), all speak GENIUS!!!!

The gorram movie gets better with each viewing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chrisisall, a fan, I guess

I think it was his witty medication. His funnies improve markedly soon after. Any guesses are good as mine what witty meds might be. Peach schnapps maybe?

JACQUI

I'm either really disappointed in you, Chrisisall, for not realising this question has been asked and answered five hundred times already...

Or highly amused that you're taking the piss out of everyone who has asked it.

Either way: As Mal and Simon discuss the merits of Simon's scared Vs angry faces... Mal says something along the lines of... "Guess it's time to get innocced before we hit planet side".

ie - standard innoculation.

*~*~*
"He's hurting a woman, he really *is* a bad guy... and I wouldn't call him a gentleman."
- Kyle, 9, watching 'Serenity'.

watch the movie with the sub-titles on and you'll have it conveniently spelled out for you!

i've watched it three times already; once with commentary and sub-titles, once with sub-titles only, and once as a theatrical release. good times.

As far as I can tell the only reason that this is in the movie is to establish that Simon is the doctor. I think it would've been better if they'd had someone hit their head on something during the landing, but oh well.

And yeah, it does seem to be a standard inoculation for going on the planet's surface, but since they've never had that before in the series (makes sense though, don't want to bring foreign pathogens to a new planet), I think that's just a rationalization for what the first paragraph says.

"See, morbid and creepifying, I got no problem with, long as she does it quiet-like."

I imagine it was done to help along the tour of the ship... after all that long uncut intro to Serenity wouldn't be complete without stopping in Simons med bay.

If we do what I do, ignore the practical reasons for putting something in a movie and instead try to think of it within the bounds of the movie ...

That must be a really crappy planet, it's the only one, Miranda included, that Mal needed a shot to go on. Considering that Mal is the only one we see get it either Jayne, River, and Zoe got one ahead of time or Mal just has a lousy immune system, perhaps Shadow was unusually clean and he didn't pick up some of the needed antibodies.

That would make some since because River would have been inoculated against everything in case some dirty rim worlder breathed on her, and if Jayne and Zoe came from places where they already came in contact with whatever Mal would be the only one in need of a shot.

Or every other time the innoculations have been administered off screen...

Mal's the only one we see using the toilet, doesn't meen he's the only one who does .

I know, but while I have no problem believing that all of the others got inoculated off-screen in that particular instance (hence listing it as a possibility) for some reason I just don't feel like they've always gotten inoculations.

In the absence of any evidence one way or the other I think it is ok to go on feeling, provided that you are willing to change direction, or at least seriously reevaluate, the moment any kind of actual evidence comes up.

Look back at every time the got onto a planet for what we think is the first time, not all that often I admit, can you honestly say you get the impression that inoculations happened?

Not could have happened, but rather do you feel that if someone who had no more evidence than you said, "You know they just got inoculated?" you’d say, "I hadn't even considered it, but yeah, I suppose they did/might have."

I mean you never see them go to the bathroom, except for Mal, but if someone says, "They all go to the bathroom on occasion," it doesn't feel revisionist, and if they said it before you had ever seen a toilet on the show you'd still accept it as true.

I'm in the air on inoculation, it makes perfect sense and there is no reason to assume that they didn't, I mean the med-bay is right on the way out the door and there'd be no real reason to show it, but if someone had said that it happened every time I'd have asked for proof, and seeing one person get one is far from proof.

Maybe they did, but at this point I see no reason not to think about all possible options, which you didn't say not to, so this isn’t really a direct response to you.

I would have said, "Might have," were I in the situation I outlined, but I'd put a lot of stress on the, "might."

I probably would say that. I'd never considered it, but it's a common occurrence even today. I mean we'd take it as gospel that they have and use toilets because we have and use toilets.
I think it's fairly reasonable to assume that inoculations are common, even without seeing them, for two reasons. One is that if you decided to take a flight abroad today you usually need to get inoculated before you leave. The second reason is that it's the simplest explanation, and requires the least amount of mental running to explain back-story.

This is true, and the explanation could very well be right, it probably is, but sometimes mental running can be rewarding. Still, I'll give it a rest.

Also, the planet that they're on in the beginning is Lilac, where terraforming went bad (at least, according to the Serenity RPG book), so maybe there's something in the air.
