When the show Firefly was on tv I did not watch it. Before it debuted I saw a couple of good reviews about the show and a couple of "it's ok" write ups. I figured it was just a bunch of good looking people palying astronaut.

A good friend (whose opinion I respect)told me the show was "great" but...... that's when Fox was yanking it around and I never caught it.
Next thing I knew it was cancelled.
I did not give it another thought until the Serenity trailer.

I loved it and saw the film opening night....and I was instantly a fan! THE NEXT DAY I went out and bought the Firefly season series and watched the whole frickin thing in a week!

The blend of western and sci fi with a touch of George Romero was so unique I wanted MORE!

And NOT TO FORGET the dialogue is first rate! (but I expected that from J.W.)

What brought me to this site is the search for a miracle. The hope of some sort of renewal of the series because Fox is so effin clueless that they may see skyrocketing dvd sales and bring it back the way Family Guy came back from the grave.

(Although the ending to Serenity would make a new Firefly an VERY different show. The film almost felt like a "goodbye" from J.W. with the many wrap up's.)

I realize that I'm not saying anything that has not already been discussed on this site. I'm just another sci fi fan that did not realize a great show of the genre came and went before most people noticed....
and I am glad there are many more like myself.

Keep spreading the word! If you get a science fiction fan to watch-buy-rent Serenity you will convert them to a fan!
Stranger things have happened.

Later......

I know what you mean.

My 'how I became a fan' story is quite similar, except I never had the pleasure of watching the film in theaters.

The trailer did not look interesting to me,and I never went to see it. It wasn't until a friend suggested we watch it only about a week ago that I knew anything of it. The promise of Alan Tudyk, who you don't really see much of, drew me in, and a great storyline and killer dialogue sold me. I still haven't seen all of the series! But I'm in love.

I find that I'm oddly guilty, both because I didn't watch the series when it was on and therefore didn't support it, and that I didn't support the film while it was in theaters. Ah well. At least I'm boosting DVD sales.

I knew my girlfriend bought the DVD for her husband for Christmas. So while we were on a walk (she is also my workout buddy) I asked her..."So, did you watch the movie?"

She said YES, but had this tone in your voice. I then said "Oh no, you didn't like it!"

The she said "That's not it, now I want to see the Firefly series, DAMMIT!"

Welcome to the Browncoats.

It doesn't matter if you come onboard today or were sitting at home the night Train Job aired...you made it here.

I was talking with my boss this morning. She knew I was a huge fan of the show. She watched Serenity on DVD this weekend. Her husband was out buying the box set today. Seems the legions just keep growing....

(and yes, I tried to get her to go while it was in theaters. I converted double digits; don't blame me because she waited till now.)

I think the Serenity DVD is what will finally push the Serenity/ Firefly 'verse into the general public's consciousnesses. Even my friend at work watched and liked Serenity (even though he told me he thought that Firefly was "hokey" a few months ago).

...Speaking of watching Serenity and becoming a fan..I kind of made my younger brother watch it who doesn't really enjoy Sci-Fi...at all. Well, as you can imagine, he really enjoyed it. He fell in love with Summer...big surprise I know.

PS this is my first post on this site, I've spent like the past two months just reading and trying to push Serenity / Firefly on everyone. I figured it was about time. In fact, I hope I did this right.

...I don't have a clever quote yet.

:D
Yes! One of the folks over on the Highlander board read one of the Firefly fics I posted over there.
She pmd me today to let me know she went out and bought both the movie and the series.

I think the sound of new converts is something like this -
"GORRAMIT, look what you did!"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Mine is an evil laugh!

Yet another similar experience of mine: I had my ex and good friend watch it with me. He liked it a lot and predictbaly developed a crush on Kaylee. He's promised to watch the series with me when I find it! I find its nice to have a buddy on these kind of things...

But my family was less impressed... and I won't even try it with some of my friends...

I've been reading all of the stuff about Wash and Book getting killed off (and I know, I was disappointed about Book) but if you think about it, the Firefly world (at least to me) is one of the most realistic portrayals of what our future in space might be out of all of them. (I don't believe we'll ever run into alien beings in our solar system).
And in real life, a group of characters facing the threats these people face are definitely going to lose members. So for me, Wash and Book's deaths make the world of Firefly/Serenity even better.

Amen to that, and welcome!
My story is the same. There are certainly many more like us who discovered it late. That would explain why the Firefly boxed set is doing so well at Amazon. Did Fox ever think that would happen?

I notice the word is spreadin too...I long for the day someone comes up to me and asks if I know about Firefly or Serenity instead of the other way around. At that moment I do believe I will have met my new best friend.
