At first I sorely missed Greg's melodys on the BDM, but time has lent me perspective.
Dave did a great job, and I find myself lovin' his music more and more.

Greg will always be #, but David surely did well, seein' as it was a big theatrical piece and such.

Musical-like comments?

I really liked the score too, I know many didnt but...some parts were totally fitting..
The entire feel of the movie was different from the series in nearly terms of everything...in a good way that is.
Many wanted Greg's style but...having a different style movie then series, with the same style songs...would not go well me thinks.

Some moments I really love in the score are when Serenity first hits atmo...that song played during the flyaround and soon as the engines hit the atmosphere and cause that huge awesome powerful sound =P the score kicks in perfectly and just WOW!!! I loved it.

I really loved the guitar performance when they went to haven the first time..I wish that song made it to the score CD it was beautiful and very homish feeling.

The music played while they land on the planet to rob the town...is cool too =) the beginning part when river says "I know Im going for a ride" the guitar the creeps in as she says that is so fitting to how she comes accross like a little girl "I know, Im gonna go out and play!"

Alot of the river scenes in which the creepie piano was in, I thought was awesome...you dont hear sounds like that in too many movies..it added tons of the creepy emotion that she was emitting.

The rest of the score sounded like your awesome epic historical movie...so it wasnt as unique as the points I mentioned above but I thought every moment of it was fitting for the movie and for that...one damn good job Dave!

Everything Gent just said, I was gonna say. But my favorites are River;s theme, I love that odd piano! And When Serenity hits atmo, the music and the surround sound of Serenity just hits home.

Also, I cant get enough of the funeral music!

Loved it. When I first got the score I wasn't gonna list it as a favorite, but it kept calling me back to listen again and again. Now I listen to it all the time, and I've got over 1100 scores to choose from (I'm a huge movie score buff). I think the score fits very well with the film, especially with Joss's specific requests.

I've got 20 scores by David Newman and I would say that the only one I listen too as much as Serenity is his score for Ice Age.

Actually, watching the series again I realize now how well David's score fits with Edmonson's music. Many of the pieces are written in the same keys as music from the series. They both use an eclectic mix of world music and instruments and exclude the same instruments as well.

Also, after watching the movie DVD a few times and listening to the music, there are several cues that have variations of the main Serenity theme in them. Too bad they didn't make the score album.

Some of my favorite cues from the album are the last four tracks. They have such a sweet sense of melancholy and yet are not free of hope either - just like the film. Perfect scoring in my opinion.

I know that most fans here are sort of biased towards Edmonson's work, but I find that I would rather watch the movie and a large part of that is due to the score. And the Operative. He's just too damned cool. And Mal. And Jayne. And Zoe, River, and cutie pie Kaylee. Oh, even Simon. And Wash (always my favorite) and Book (another favorite). Cue the melancholy...

"I don't wanna explode."

Well, being the music and Firefly fanatic I am, I have both soundtracks, and listen to them both more than anything right now. I love the notes about the film music though, and the piano used for River's theme. "Something beautiful, that's been slightly warped."

This is something I've noticed about the music, which I really like. There is one primary theme, you know the one I'm talking about...at the title screen. The cello solo. I think that's "Serenity's (as in the ship) Theme" and you notice how almost each character has the same theme, but on a different instrument. For example, Mal has it on a "gun-fighter-esque" guitar solo. Book is dying, and the theme is very much like a durge and minor and sad. And when the disguise Serenity as a Reaver ship, the theme is distorted with all types of dissonance and musical special effects. But the same theme is still there, just twisted and kinda ugly. And then, at the end of the film, when Mal is speaking of love, you hear River's piano come in, but with Serenity's Theme. Showing that she's truly 100% part of the family now. I love that whole idea, it fits the movie so well.

Then at the end of the credits, you have the Firefly theme just on guitar...so great. And the show music...you just can't beat that...its too cool.

I'm so glad I'm not alone in seein' the greatness in Newman's score. I admit, it took me a while, being such a Edmonson fan, but Joss wanted a differnt sound for the BDM, so, so be it.

Chrisisall, Newman fan as well now

I really adore the score to Serenity. I love Edmonson just as much as the next browncoat, but Newman's score fits beautifully. The beginning sequence with Serenity hittimg atmo just gives me goosebumps, and the uncanny urge to run around with my arms spread like a ship. That cello opening...*dies* And who isn't in love with the theme featured on the End Credits???
River's theme I thought was quite unique with the 'other-worldly' out of tune piano. There are so many ques in the movie that I've picked out now that I have the DVD, and they are placed so wonderfully.
I also really like the Jayne/Zoe/Final Battle sequence. It goes from extremely touching to kick-ass in a matter of seconds.
Of course, the last few tracks are my favorite.
and Going for a Ride is just the coolest little piece, too. I feel ready for a heist, myself!
Sorry for the long, rambling post. I'm listening to the sountrack again, and I keep finding little tunes that I'm like "oh! I love this part!"

Yeppers, I like it. Having listened to the soundtrack several times over, I like how it turned out.

I really enjoyed the accoustic Firefly theme at the end of the credits. I wish that had made the soundtrack. That's the only real issue I have about the music.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Yeh the score is good. There's overtones of Firefly in there but there's also scenes where the score reminds me of films like Pirates of the Carribean. When you first see Serenity, the camera sweeps around and zooms into the cockpit with a very dramatic soundtrack and then cuts to Mal and Wash in the cockpit. Reminds of when you first see Johnny Depp in Pirates riding in on the mast of his sunken ship. Both scenes make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up due to the massive score mixed with imagery.

Yeah, what they said!

I love the movie soundtrack, but I do agree with a poster or reviewer somewhere who wrote that some of the really good tracks are over too soon. To remedy this I created a playlist that repeats some of my favorites and for me it's more satisfying. I set the track "Serenity" that features the opening fly around the ship to play twice in a row and I set "Funeral/Rebuilding Serenity" to play twice as well. (I also excluded a couple tracks that don't do anything for me.)
