I hate to nitpick, but I've seen the line River says misquoted frequently on this board, in signatures and avatars and whatnot.

The correct version of the quote reads: "Bible's broken. Contradictions, false logistics, doesn't make sense."

That is the word is "logistics," not "logics."

Flame away! :)

No flaming at all necessary; thanks for the correction.
And I happen to agree with her...

You know what's funny about that?

Logic: a science that deals with the principles and criteria of validity of inference and demonstration : the science of the formal principles of reasoning

Logistics: the aspect of military science dealing with the procurement, maintenance, and transportation of military matériel, facilities, and personnel

Actually the definition you’re using is military jargon. The general definition of logistic is simply ‘symbolic logical.’ Anything from mathematics to poetry could be described as logistics. The Bible is a form of logistics as well, since it also, in many pages, employs symbolic logic. And the quote is not a criticism of the Bible, but rather it is depicting, as in many other sense, River’s inability to understand the more abstract concepts of human nature, despite her genius intellect. In this case, the abstraction is faith and belief in something larger then one’s own self, as in the revelation in Star Trek:MP:

Spock: V'Ger must evolve. Its knowledge has reached the limits of this universe and it must evolve. What it requires of its god, doctor, is the answer to its question, "Is there nothing more"?
McCoy: What more is there than the universe, Spock?
Decker: Other dimensions. Higher levels of being.
Spock: The existence of which cannot be proven logically. Therefore, V'Ger is incapable of believing in them.
Kirk: What it needs in order to evolve... is a human quality. Our capacity to leap beyond logic.

It is a common theme in science fiction to explore the limitations of logic, and the contraction of genius without imagination and faith. River’s comments are ironic, because it is actually the Bible that smarter then her, as Book points out; it is not the Bible that is broken, but rather her inability to understand faith.

An irony that I think we would have seen explored further had the episodes continued and River been allowed to develop towards a stronger understanding of what “false logistics” really means in this case.

So I'm striving not to take offense here. This is the full version that I pulled from Merriam-Webster online (quoted in part above):

Main Entry: lo·gis·tics
Pronunciation: lO-'jis-tiks, l&-
Function: noun plural but singular or plural in construction
Etymology: French logistique art of calculating, logistics, from Greek logistikE art of calculating, from feminine of logistikos of calculation, from logizein to calculate, from logos reason
1 : the aspect of military science dealing with the procurement, maintenance, and transportation of military matériel, facilities, and personnel
2 : the handling of the details of an operation

Now, you're right. The term "logistic" does refer to symbolic logic. As a philosophy guy, I'd better know that. The thing I was pointing out was that the term "logistics" is very rarely used in common speech referring to logic or logical arguments--it's almost always a referrence to, well, that stuff in the definition up there. Hence, while River means logic (which I understand), my brain always flashes back to the other definition and I visualize Moses handing out MREs or somesuch.

Ha ha, funny-funny.

Well, setting aside the peculiarity of why you would take offense at all , the Merriam-Webster dictionary has two definitions for logistics, with the more general definition being an application to, and really a description of, mathematics.

And I understand your point, and that you were being funny. It wasn’t my intent to insult you, if I did. I just thought I would throw in my obtuse 2¢. I rather thought my post was somewhat insightful.

Sorry, Finn. Don't know what my problem's been this morning, hypersensitive and all. Can I blame it on the terrifying space monkeys that got loose in my closet this morning?
