Saw it too, nearly died when I saw it at No1. Dance of joy was done. Awesome ain't it?

I was so very shocked, once I saw HP4 was at no 6...I thought, wow, we can't have made the top 10 then.

There's a nice writeup on the Film 2005 site.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/film2005/filmofyear_2005.shtml

I watched the series on WB but didn't catch many because of the time it was on. I became an avid fan through SciFc Ch though. My daughter bought me Serenity for Christmas, incredible movie !! And I ordered the Firefly series from Amazon on Wednesday, throuth this site. It arrived TODAY so we've got THREE WHOLE DAYS to watch them all !!!

I wonder why Firefly/Serenitiy is so popular on the isle. What do you UK browncoats think is the reason for that? You seem to have become quite a sci-fi nation lately.

I'm not sure why it's so popular here in the UK, Firefly was quite unheard of (as far as I know it only aired on the Sci-Fi channel which many people don't have).

The new series of Dr.Who gave Sci-Fi a boost in popularity, maybe that helped?

The UK has quietly re-taken the title of Center of the SF Universe... (in the really old days, they kept SF alive with DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, DONOVAN'S BRAIN, VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, & unending Dr.Whos.)

Just lately-
Iain Banks has created the broadest space opera Universe ever, wherein the Culture employs its own rebels as secret agents, & its AI ships are vastly more intelligent than humans and have names like LIMITING FACTOR or I TOLD YOU SO. (Browncoats would feel right at home in his Verse).

COUPLING (a dating sitcom) has a character who runs a SciFi bookstore.

Dr. Who is back and his sidekick uses spock to mean brilliant.

Tim Robbins starred in Code 46 (well worth seeing for the futuristic backgrounds -all real cities around the world).

lol it's a nice thought that Oliver from coupling indirectly helped the UK success of Serenity but I don't think it's likely

all I was saying was they are not in the grip of anti-science fundies... more receptive to SF in general- not just Joss' visions. It was on a UK bb I first heard of Firefly- in a sig line!:]

forgot to mention- Brits had follow-up 'Making of' shows on BBC3 for every episode of WHO, kinda think that's a good way to support a series.

Also they've got this 'Red Button' thing, interactive TV they are playing with- quite interesting.

From the BBC site:

Quote:

1. Perched on top of the heap we call 2005, Serenity.
It was far from the biggest hit of the year but the rabid fanbase which helped get Joss Whedon's cancelled sci-fi series onto the big screen has now handed it the biggest accolade in modern cinema: the title of Film 2005 Film of the Year. Rachel Formby calls it, 'A labour of love filled with strong, superbly written characters, humour, emotion and cool effects'. Juliet Richards in Stanstead claims it 'brilliantly blended comedy, action, drama, horror and romance', adding that 'the only negative point I can think of is that it wasn't out for long enough so I only got to see it five times on the big screen'. That's the sort of passion we like to see.

That's great news! On that subject, I noticed a poll today on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), where they ask for the best of 2005, some browncoats around here might want to do their duty for our cause, as I just did mine

Oh, here is the url: http://us.imdb.com/features/rto/2006/poll/bestof2005

Thanks Storch for posting the IMDB poll! It would be nice if we could push Serenity into the top 5! Also, please consider Ron Glass for the best supporting actor category, at last check we would only need 90 some votes to get his name on the list. Nathan has made the list but could possibly move up a notch or two.

It seems to me that all my favorite sci-fi shows do better in the UK than the US. When I was hooked on Babylon 5 (still am to an extent...now not so much) it was really big there too.

Just voted for everything Serenity over IMDb (except a couple Wallace and Gromits), even though I had to register first. Looks like we have a good chance with the following:

IF WE GET A FEW HUNDRED MORE VOTES. WE ALL KNOW THERE'S MORE BROWNCOATS THAN A FEW HUNDRED!

Serenity for all the appropriate movie stuff
Nathan Fillion for best actor
Adam Baldwin for best supporting actor
Summer Glau for Actress
I put Jewel Staite since we didn't have a Serenity member for supporting actress yet
and Joss for Director--he's currently in third!

Glass definitely deserves one too, but I figured I'd do my best to bump up any Serenity member than scatter our votes...

there's like 30,000 votes there now, less I'm reading it wrong...

I voted for the obvious, but also put alan as best supporting actor, and gina as supporting actress.
it was cool that there was a serenity documentary to put for that category, I thought they just meant the ones which were released like films.

No idea why the film was so popular over here. I'd never even heard of Firefly and I'd never seen it in the shops. Obviously I'm extremely happy it did go down well. My Dad likes collecting his Film Review Mags, and in everyone it's been in I've heard nothing bad about it. Can't wait while it's out on DVD. It definately was my film of the year, ahead of Harry Potter & everything else. I've never seen a film/TV series where the actors are so comfortable with their roles. It looks like they've been playing that person all their life. Great!!!

I only watched Film 2005 by chance and I couldn't believe it either when Serenity won. It made my day, week, year and decade.

I had a think about possible reasons for Serenity's success in the UK (apart from being the best movie ever made)but these might be true in other countries too. I don't think big stars are very important in a film's success here. Also there's lots of Sci-Fi on UK TV and most people watch it as a child and as an adult - Dr. Who's a good example but there are lots of others. Anyone got any better ideas?

And shame on those of you who didn't know Britain is a sci-fi nation;).

Hello UK browncoat here :) I wouldn't presume to speak of everyones behalf but for me It's because there's basically two choices on British tv.:

1 Reality Tv show's

2 Soaps

Throw in the odd Period Drama at bank holidays, easter and/or christmas and that's about as much choice as we're given.

So when quality Sci-fi comes along we lap it up :D or at least I do.... Having said that I'm still extremely fussy and don't just accept any old sci-fi...

Perhaps it's not just sci-fi that's taking over the UK but Whedonism as well. Russel T Davies (Dr Who) and Stephen Moffat (Dr Who and Coupling) are both Buffy fans and both reference it in their shows. The sci-fi bookstore in Coupling is called Hellmouths or something and I seem to remember another Buffy reference in that episode. One of Russel T Davies' characters in his show about someone who found out that he owned Swansea said something like 'it's like something out of Buffy'.

I think a lot of it is to do with the Sci-Fi Channel showing it right, like Fox never did!

We got all the episodes, in the right order, and not put off for baseball and other sundry rubbish.

I for one was hooked by the end of The Train Job.

i dont wanna poop on the parade but i was a bit annoyed that after showing clips of the BDM and a clip of mr whedon on film 2005, jonathon ross asked his guests in the studio whether they'd seen the film and both of them said no and instead they decided to talk about star wars instead of talking about the BDM!

i got the feeling that as jonathon ross said that it didnt do too amazing at the box office but it does have a loyal fan base that perhaps we'd won film of the year because of our obsessive voting.

dont get me wrong i was ecstatic that it won, and its certainly had an effect. some people that i know who saw film 2005 now really wanna watch the film as they never saw it at the cinema and always thought that they wouldnt like it beacuse its some nerdy sci-fi thing that only i would like, so yay for spreading the signal!

Yeh UK TV is a load of gorramn rubbish. So my viewing consists of DVDs including Firefly, Serenity, Star Wars, Red Dwarf, Spaced, Sienfeld, Scrubs and Futurama. On TV I just tend to watch The Simpsons and Documentries (I have no cable) and any film that takes my fancy.
