It was cancelled because Fx doesn't know a good show from a hole in the ground.

In the "we want more" department, I received an email from Amazon about a paperback book entilted "Serenity: Out in the Black" by "Serenity" that is to be released on 1-16-06. Anyone know what this is?

Too elaborate slightly on Malicious's accurate, if terse post (I feel your anger, my friend )...

Basically, Fox promoted the show absolutely terribly. You can find the original promos for the show. Hideous. That, and they felt an urgent desire to air the show totally out of order. If you want to have a fun little game, grab the DVDs and compare the airdates against the production order. Oh wait, that's not a fun game. It causes brain hemorraging. In addition, they downright buried the show, changing its timeslot and the like. Bottom line, the folks who would've loved it never saw it, and the ones who did couldn't find it to watch.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

I saw the movie before the show as well! Then I saw the show and after that I fell in complete love!!!

Of course we want more, and I'm going to keep my hopes high. :)

Why it was cancelled is a subject of much debate. FOX says low ratings, but the thing is that they were (if memory serves, someone can look this up) never out of the top five in the sci-fi/fantasy genre and consistently above Angel and Buffy.

Fox knew Firefly's genre (and the ratings limitations of it) and wanted something on the level of Buffy and Angel.

So how does that translate to ratings that are too low? I don't know.

I do know why the ratings weren't as good as Fox wanted.

I never saw a single commercial for Firefly and I’m one of the ones who watched it from the first episode. I saw one single blurb on it, less than three minutes long, from an independent source that Fox didn't pay for and might not have even known about. After I knew the name of the show and exactly when it was coming on it still took me a while to confirm that it even existed. Looking back at it I feel like I know what happened to Mr Prosser .*

Even then the first episode they played was number two. The next was three followed closely by six, then there was a week off, after that came seven, eight, four, five, nine, two weeks off, ten, fourteen, and finally one. Where the hell they learned to count I do not know.

Knowing that about the show it's hard to believe anyone understood it enough to watch.

*
Mr Prosser: "You were quite entitled to make any suggestions or protests at the appropriate time."
Arthur Dent: "Appropriate time? The first I knew about it was when a workman arrived at the door yesterday. I asked him if he'd come to clean the windows and he said he'd come to demolish the house. He didn't tell me straight away of course. Oh no. First he wiped a couple of windows and charged me a fiver. Then he told me."
Mr Prosser: "But Mr Dent, the plans have been available in the planning office for the last nine months."
Arthur Dent: "Yes, I went round to find them yesterday afternoon. You hadn't exactly gone out of your way to call much attention to them had you? I mean like actually telling anybody or anything. "
Mr Prosser: "The plans were on display ..."
Arthur Dent: "Ha! – and how many average members of the public are in the habit of casually dropping around at the local planning office of an evening? It's not exactly a noted social venue, is it? And even if you had popped in on the off-chance that some raving bureaucrat wanted to knock your house down, the plans weren't immediately obvious to the eye, were they?
Mr Prosser: "That depends where you were looking"
Arthur Dent: "I eventually had to go down to the cellar."
Mr Prosser: "That's the display department."
Arthur Dent: "With a torch."
Mr Prosser: "The lights had probably gone."
Arthur Dent: "So had the stairs."
Mr Prosser: "But you found the notice didn't you?"
Arthur Dent: "Yes. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'. Ever thought of going into advertising?"

Hmmm, with that exchange in mind, I refuse to be satisfied until Fox gives us a fitting final message:

"Sorry for the inconvenience."

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

You said what I am thinking exactly. I was into enterprise and thought I got shafted cause it was cut short. I like you bought the DVD set because I saw the movie. I am now hooked but am feeling bad about it because I to want more. Its a sad thing to see a show you like get axed. I really do hope SCi Fi channel or another outlet will pick it up.

I agree. My dad told me he had seen a few eps when it first aired, and I had to confess I had never even HEARD of it. Then SciFi picked it up for reruns, which is how I actually started seeing it. (Only for curiousity, since Serenity was already being promoted)

And I <3 you, ChrisTC, for quoting that book.

So, Fox designed their programming department based on a Douglas Adams novel?
Wow! That explains so much!

Check it out everyone set Tivos and what not to get higher ratings! even if you have the box set like me lol. by the way, anyone know how fox, or any other company, knows the ratings? how do they know if im watching firefly or not from my home?

----

Well actually I was quoting the radio series, I believe. It sounds like the radio series version and I think the person who typed it out (I can't take credit for it) was transcribing the radio series.

Just like me... We saw the movie first and then the show and then... the rest is history. It will come back. And yes... We all want more. Once you experience SERENITY... There's no turning back. You wouldn't want to. Welcome to our new world.
