Does anyone know absolutely that Fox still owns the rights to Firefly? If you go to the Universal/NBC website and look up what networks it owns SCI-FI is one that's listed. Is it possible that Universal/NBC is now the owner considering they made the movie and also show Firefly on SCI-FI? If so would'nt they be the people to lobby for a return of the show? Or am I off base on this.

Sci Fi channel bought the re run rights to Firefly, for an undisclosed amount of time. But Fox still owns the rights to Firefly, and that is why their dvd division puts out the dvd set. As of now Universal owns the rights to make movies.

Fox still owns Firefly, they simply licensed the rights to run the show to NBC/Universal to run on Sci-Fi.

The messed up thing ( I heard this somewhere ) is that part of the contract with fox stipulates that the actors cannot star in another firefly series for 10 years ( if it is not on fox i guess ).

I thought I read that during a convention panel or an interview Nathan refuted the 10 year thing as misinformation. It's just a rumor that won't die.

Put it simply;

20th Century Fox (these aren't the guys that cancelled the show - that was Fox Broadcasting Network) owns all the TV rights to anything Firefly/Serenity related and released the original 14 episodes of Firefly that aired in 2002 on DVD.

Universal Studios owns the movie rights to anything Firefly/Serenity related and released the movie "serenity" in theaters and, on DVD and VHS.

Sci-Fi purchased the re-run rights from 20th Century Fox.

At anytime another company who obtains the rights to something Firefly/Serenity related (for example the Serenity roleplaying) both 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios get royalities (unless some other deal is made between the groups).

So really to tell you the truth the only way we could see Firefly/Serenity as a series again is if 20th Century Fox would make it unless they sold the rights to Universal Studios but that doesn't guarantee that any network would pick it up. If Universal Studios did get the rights then the NBC/Universal Broadcasting Networks would have the first dibs but if they turned it down which they probably would since they don't really run shows like Firefly/Serenity except on their Sci-Fi Channel then it could very well end up being bought by Fox Broadcasting Network or some other broadcasting group.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

just out of curiosity: how much are the rights (the TV rights that FOX owns) worth?

STORYMARK

Well, it's hard to define the monetary value of an Intellectual Property. But the unfortunet truth of the situation is: It's worth as much as FOX thinks it's worth - and as much as someone else is willing to pay. If they wanted to unload the rights back to Joss for a buck fifty they could. They could also ask $100 meag-gazzillion if they wanted to. They have the rights. The price is up to them.

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."
