According to the latest Empire Magazine, Universal have given the go-ahead for a Land Of The Dead sequel even though it performed poorly at the US Box Office. If Land Of The Dead gets a sequel, then surely Serenity will get one!!!! Let's hope.

Well, according to the numbers at imdb (I do not know how up to date or how comprehensive they are), Land of the Dead made slightly more than it cost to make (as did Underworld, another surprise sequel winner), while Serenity did not. I would love to see another Serenity movie, and I think that figuring out why they are making another Highlander movie can give some clues to success. HL has a similarly fanatical fanbase, Endgame had a similar box office failure... and Endgame was really NOT fun. All the fan fic, stories and cool characters they had to choose from and they came up with THAT story? Sheesh... Joss is so much more considerate of his fan base and his art. But if the notoriously inconsiderate HL PTB can decide to make another, it is possible to imagine another Serenity. I know Hollywood isn't about quality, it's about profits. Yet it is only logical that if studios keep making boring unfun movie after mindless sleep-inducing flic, well, people will stop going. Ultimately, some studio will spend money, maybe they will spend it on something entertaining?

But does Land of Dead and Underworld include DVD sales?

I think a sequel is quite likely. So many more people are into the Firfly 'verse now that it can only do better, as long as the reviews are as good (if not better).

Some ideas for the sequel:

-Don't call it Serenity 2 or Serenity II. I think it should be Serenity: Subtitle. As well as not turning away the many people who didnt catch the 1st movie, itd be an oppurtunity for the title to describe the film better, no more people thinking its a chick flick.
-A better release date. I know it couldn't really be helped, but the Sep/Oct release really didnt help Serenity.
-Maybe aim for a 12A UK rating? I think the 12-14 age group would be a good one to get seeing the film, I don't think it would hurt to tone down the violence.

Serenity has taught me not to get too optimistic, but I think the sequel could be a lot more succesful. It's gotta be a worth a shot.

GELASSENHEIT, Land of the Dead was George Romero's 4th zombie film. It follows Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead.

As far as the plot: A city of surviving humans is besieged by an army of the undead... and the zombies are beginning to get smarter.

Always makes me wonder why rubbish shows that get promoted highly enough will manage to break even etc, and motivate for sequels, do they even look at how crap the movies they are actually funding?

God, that was the WORST piece of crappy "filmmaking" that came out this year. I hated it more thatn the crappy Day of the Dead. I surely hope that this movie will suffer a fate worse than Firefly on FOX (I still LOVE Firefly-don't worry, cuz you know what I mean).

But this could be good news for us Browncoats with a sequel for Serenity.

I'd prefer the TV show back, but I think a sequel is probably more likely. I heard ticket sales in general are tanking due to the ease of renting, high quality sound and picture on DVDs, wide screen TVs, and the rapid release to video. There are always going to be some blockbusters, but I think in general Hollywood will have to rely more on video sales and rentals. If this is true, I think a sequel could definitely be a possibility. Especially considering the almost complete LACK of advertising! Browncoats are doing all the work! (Labor of love.)

When they make a movie, I just hope they don't kill off Jayne. Or Mal. Or River, Kaylee, Inara... oh crap.

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

My experience is that the release of the series and the movie on DVD exposed the series to a number of people who have just become fans in the past few weeks.

Firefly's obstacles are well-known and seems like the show has only now gained the wide appreciation it deserves. I saw a few epsidoes in their original airings but never became a fan. Then I saw a few episodes and realized I wanted to see the whole series before watching the movie. My interest has been viral amongst my friends but, only just recently.

Gathering with friend over the holiday, I have found alot of very new fans that are very excited. It is sad that so many appreciate the show now but, a sequel would now be better recieved due to a large number of new Browncoat recuits.

I am not sure if we new fans show up in the numbers but, I hope word gets to the right people to support more Serenity projects.

Just checked #s at boxofficemojo.com. LotD didn't do too bad. Worldwide box office ~3X production costs (only $15 million). Though Mr Romero's best zombie film making days are clearly behind him, I would imagine that his cult film status probably translated into decent home video sales as well. I would estimate that a sequel being greenlit has much to do with Romero's long established reputation for making a lot out of a little. I don't know how much worse (or better) a film SERENITY would have been had it been produced for $15 million. I'm sure that we'd have a much different outlook regarding the $38.5 million that it earned in ticket sales.

The Los Angeles Times had a couple articles in recent days about the financial state of the film industry. One point they made is not to use the domestic gross as a barometer for a film's financial success. There's also the overseas take, DVD sales, merchandise licensing, etc.
