FREELANCEPILOT

I have been a firefly fan for awhile and i just came out of the holiday season with my own copies of the dvd and the movie. I got my father hooked on it too while i was visiting.

Then, one day over the holidays, he comes over and tells me we are going shooting (archery) at the range the next day. I look up at him and say "shiny".
Forget for a moment i am a half asian/half spanish guy from texas (and the messed up things that does with my accent and speech patterns as it is) and think about this.
I am using slang from firefly in my day to day.
I even muttered 'Gorram it" to myself while washing a car.

Please say i am not the only one...

Wash: Yeah, but psychic? That sounds like science fiction.
Zoƫ: You live on a spaceship, dear.
Wash: So?

Don't worry brother, you're not alone. I've incorporated "Shiny" into my regular vocabulary at work, and much to my delight, a co-worker used it in conversation with me the other day. It was heart-warming :)

Oh heavens yes! Mostly if I've been watching Firefly very, very recently, but yeah! And you think it's bad with you? I've only been a 100%fan since seeing Our Mrs. Reynolds (I had seen The Train Job and part of Shindig before that and liked them, but Our Mrs. Reynolds = falling in LOVE) during the Serenity promotion on SciFi this past fall! That's only a scant few months! :P

Granted, most of the lingo I DO use is more westerny than Fireflyish, such as saying "mighty" as in "mighty big" or "mighty fine"; or saying "a mite" (as in "a mite crazy"). Nobody seems to notice this much around here, because I do live in Florida, which is TECHNCIALLY the south, although almost no native Floridians have the Floridian accent, and the Floridian accent is a very subtle one. But I have indeed been known to say "shiny" quite a few times after watching Firefly.

A mite obessessed, I am. 'Tis migthty strange but oddly shiny, how this gorram lovely little series has affected my lingo.

Just wait until you describe something as shiny in a term paper for your nit-picking English professor . . .and having him recognize it and comment on it in the margins

The only solution, of course, is to convert enough people so that it's mainstream slang.

Yeah I've noticed myself saying "gorram, shiny, mighty fine, ruttin and more Firefly lingo" in my everyday speech, it's weird.

GLOBLABSURDITY

Firefly & Serenity have changed my entire family--we are all using "shiny", "conjure", "reckon", "ain't it just","gorramit" (wich has replaced my youngest son's prior "tarter sauce"--lol)--and all of this along with the various little catch phrases that get repeated throughout the day. For example--"the heck with this--I'm gonna live". Ha! Musn't forget "the leaf"--this one has replaced "the force be with you" and is now "the leaf be with you"--or some such. Alas, we are in Ga. so this is all not such a far stretch for us---

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

You are definitely not alone my friend.

I find myself saying shiny, gorram, ruttin', special hell, dong ma, and using the occasional Mandarin curse.

I'm pretty certain that quite a few fans find themselves doing the same. It comes from a deep love of the Firefly 'verse and multiple viewings of the episodes.

O zhe zhen shi ge kuai le de jin zhan
"Oh, this is a happy development..."

You are not alone. I look for opportunities to say "Ta Ma De," "Gorram It," and so on. The only thing is only my significant other and friends that have seen the show, knows what it means. And that's OK. I suppose.

Don't forget to call him "Sir." He likes that.

My speech has been affected in another way. I don't say things like "Gorram it!" or "Shiny!" but I speak with a slight southern accent. I'm from the south so you'd think a southern accent would be normal, but I never had one til I started watching Firefly.

Mal would kick Han Solo's ass.
