Am I the only one who picked this up or am I missing something? I thought that Mal finished his service with the Browncoats as a sargent, but in the Movie the Operative does a search and has Mal as a captain. where did the promotion come from? this has bugged me since I have watched both the shows and the movie a number of times and I cannot figure it out---Any help on this will be appreciated

Oh....Good bible

I noticed. I dunno if it was a screw-up or what, but someone in another thread said that maybe Mal got an after-war promotion for the battle of Serenity Valley. Which sounds plausible to me.

"Sir, you actually said 'wink, wink'. I don't think that -"
"Oh, you'd be surprised."

"Yes, the new plan will STILL involve rocket skates."
"YAY!"

Personally, I think it's a screw-up. There's never any mention, when talking of Mal's war service, of him ever being anything other than a Sergeant. The same info the Operative is looking at has Mal receiving a Medal of Valor for Serenity Valley. Who gave him that? The Independents, who lost the war? The Alliance, who wouldn't give medals to their opponents?

I think the tech people involved in the movie forget/don't realize that the fans are going to freeze frame the movie looking for every small detail, and so don't pay attention to those same details. After all, the record also has his name listed as "Malcom" on one screen, and "Malcolm" on the other, and lists his birth year as 2468, making him almost 50 years old! Yes, I admit it, I freeze framed my DVD. *hangs head in embarassment*

Anyway, this is just my opinion. I'm sure this subject has been debated elsewhere, and will continue to be debated for quite some time. That's part of the fun of being a browncoat!

It's a screw up, but could probably be explained that he was promoted since the war wasn't over completely yet.

This probably started life as a screw-up, but, in the best Marvel Comics No-Prize tradition, some of us have come up with an explanation:

There were two weeks between the Independent's surrender and the actual evacuation of Serenity Valley. During this time the Browncoat high command was in negotiations with the Alliance as to terms of surrender. While soldiers of both sides lay dying of neglect, they dickered over details--one of which was the right to muster their own out with full military honors and official upgrades of field commisions. At the war's end, Mal had been de-facto field commander for more than a month, and therefore he was upgraded to Captain, and credited with a Medal of Valor. Must have been ashes in his mouth.

By the by, if you freeze-and-zoom the computer readouts on the deleted scene of the Operative researching Mal (on the Serenity special features) you can see that both Mal and Zoe are listed as "Nontrialed Browncoats"; which indicates that at least some Browncoats were put on trial. Probably not any of the tin hats who wasted time in negotiations while Mal's men were dying of starvation and lack of medial care. No wonder the man's bitter.

LOL! Nothing to be ashamed of there (I'm not). Did you notice the day & month of his birth? Yup, same as the series debut! That was an elegant touch.

Elegant description (ashes), and yes, excellent logic! I was really annoyed by that (seems disrespectful), so you've given me a frame of reference to deal with it.
