Can't believe that no-one has posted this yet, but Empire magazine ( www.empireonline.com) has big news on the UK release of Serenity. Apparently we'll be getting all the extras from the R1 release, plus a 20-minute R2 exclusive documentary entitled A Film-maker's Journey, detailing Joss's efforts to get the BDM made. Thank you Universal!

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I feel the need to spread the word!

27 February - UK Serenity Day!

Where was the post? I checked back to about November and couldn't find anything. Typical of me to be bearing old news. Woops!

I've not seen a thread about the Region 2 (UK & Europe) DVD anywhere else at all. So it's news to me, and maybe to everyone else too.

Well done for the scoop!

Posted before but always good to spread the word.

Region 4 (Australia etc) are getting 2 discs with a few more extras. I've pre-ordered one from there since I want as much Serenity goodness as I can get. Tin box too if you get it from EZDVD! Just make sure you've got a region-free DVD player of course :)

Thanks, RelFexive.

Mmm... tin box! Want! But how come only R4 gets the posh 2-disc treatment? Any news on these extra, er, extras?

Stores like HMV and Virgin sometimes produce exclusive collector's slipcases (Constantine was one such example - I counted four different cover options!). Maybe they'll do something for Serenity? I'll post nearer the time if I find out anything.

The extras from the site:

# A Filmmakers Journey - Journey with Joss from Script to Screen (exclusive to Australian DVD)
# Joss Whedon Q&A Session - Filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney (exclusive to Australian DVD)
# Extended Scenes (exclusive to Australian DVD)
# Take a Walk on Serenity - Cast and Crew take us on a special tour of the Serenity ship (exclusive to Australian DVD)
# The Green Clan - Expose on Cinematographer Jack Green and his team (exclusive to Australian DVD)

Obviously the first one is just exclusive to all the international versions of the DVD, but the rest are only in the Region 4 release AFAIK.

Keep in mind too that if you are buying other regions not only do you have to have a region free player, but one that will accept PAL (the US is on NTSC). If you don't your DVD's will look very distorted if they play at all.

Prepare to be wrong (I think).

It may be that many Region 4 DVDs are also Region 2 (check the box). For example, my South Park Season 1 DVDs are Regions 2,3,4,5 and 6: i.e. anywhere except North America.

However, Region 2 and 4 are both PAL, so what that means is that the picture will display correctly on your TV if you can get the Region 4 DVD to play.

so as well as ordering two region 1 dvds which ive already done, and pre-ordering a copy of the region 2 dvd which ive already done, i now have to order the region 4 dvd? yikes, i mean its great for dvd sales but my bank balance will suffer!

will universal do that thing of later on re-releasing the film as a special edition with all these international extras?

I'd say 'Versal probably will, especially if sales hold up for a reasonable period of time.

Chances are that they'd put things in that "Special Edition" that were totally new to all regions though, so all the Browncoats would want it.

Cast commentary - I'd buy a new copy just for that and Joss has said he'd love to do one for the film, they just didn't have time.

Of course, this is not the first time such a theory has been put forth. Other incarnations have included "Serenity was number one at the box office in the UK, so they're giving us extra features." Naturally, that's all utter horseshit. And I for one resent the implication that Browncoats in other areas of the world didn't hold the line, and hence are less deserving than the ones in the UK.

Ouch, touchy!

No implication intended, Causal. Of course I know that Browncoats worldwide have served with distinction, spreading the word and converting others to the shiny 'verse. I think it's unfair, in fact, that R1 owners are short-changed in this way - surely all Browncoats deserve the same high standard of extras, wherever they live?

Damn, skippy, touchy. Touchy because I wrote letters when it looked like the series was gonna get canceled. Touchy because I waited with bated breath to see if there'd be DVDs. Touchy because I wrote letters when Uni was thinking about making a movie. Toughy because of cons and shindigs and meetups attended. Touchy because of every person I called, emailed, and personally invited to come see the movie. Touchy because I watched the movie falter and fall at the box office (let's be honest, when your movie makes less in its entire run than others make in a weekend, that's bad). Touchy because now we have no idea if there'll be sequels. Touchy because when you say, "We got more than others because of what we did" you always imply (even if it's unintentional), "You got less because you didn't do as much as we did."

So yeah. A little touchy.

I suspect that the real reason is more along the lines of U.S. marketing versus the rest of the world. Universal is probably well aware that U.S. fans of any particular fandom (and yes, I'm generalizing) tend to be more willing than the rest of the world to buy the original, immediate release DVD, and then turn around and buy the Special Edition Director's Cut With Extra Special Never-Before-Seen Stuff a few months later. That being the case, Universal stands to make a lot more money by putting a "less complete" version of the DVD here and then turning around and selling the one with all the bells and whistles later.

This actually isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. More money from DVD sales means more likelihood of a sequel flick, right?

Besides which, movie studio execs (or heads of any other major corp, for that matter) don't give out freebies as thanks to the fans. There's no profit in it, and as we all know, these entities exist to make profit. If other regions are getting special features that R1 doesn't get, I'm inclined to think that there's a money-making motive driving this, rather than some kind of special thank-you for voting Serenity number one on BBC.

Amazing logic, considering this ONE extra was confirmed long before Serenity won Film 2005's award.

Yes, it has nothing to do with awards. More likely. it was a feature that wasn't finished in time for the American release (get it out before Xmas and sell a shedload, after all) or just a little teaser to try to get people to buy the DVD in their own territory rather than import from the USA.

Save the pity. I have the U.K. and Aussie collectors tin editions both on pre-order. That & my brand new region free DVD player will see to it I get all the goodies there are to have.

Thanks for the concern though.

Laptop DVD drives aren't region free, HOWEVER, there's a free application you can download that will let you watch DVDs from other regions despite your DVD player being Region [whatever].

Now that's the kind of passion that gets movies made.

Being a fairly new convert to the 'verse (I discovered Firefly on DVD only last May), I sometimes forget that there are those out there who have been following and championing this cause for years. And without them, it's likely that there would be no BDM for me to watch and love. So thanks, guys and gals.

One does what one can to push the Firefly message, but it's easy to feel like the only person who cares about it when everyone you know seems ambivalent about sci-fi. Personally, I don't know many who made the effort to go see Serenity at the cinema (I went once with a friend and twice more on my own before the movie closed) and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

So hopefully the R2 DVD release will generate a new, more receptive audience over here. We do so love our home entertainment - and watching a DVD in the comfort of one's lounge seems increasingly preferable to, and cheaper than, a trip to the cinema.

Yes, it's good that there are plenty of versions of the disc for the fans to collect - but why treat the 'home' audience (R1) so shoddily?

All o ya'll are crazy LOL - a few points

R1 will be re-released later on as a 2 disc, it's called "Double dipping" and Universal are widely renowned in the industry as one of the majors that uses this tool to great advantage, often the criticism is that it's a way to rip off the consumer, but anywho, it seems to work for them.

Like the music industry in Japan where it's much cheaper for the fan to import cds rather then buying local, the record companies always release their albums with bonus material not available in other territories for that reason to get people to buy direct rather then import.

extras on DVDs are often more prevalent on overseas markets for that very same reason (not always but more often then not) plus as with Serenity's case the window between the US release and the International release is too wide thus the option of giving them 'extra' to entice them to their version -

Universal aren't banking on fans buying various versions from around the world because the plain fact is that not that many (in the bigger scheme of things) will do that. 99% of the income will come direct from the local market. Each territory has to make money, not just as a collective but individual offices, which is why R1 will have more to come, they ain't finished yet - that's a guarantee.

so yeah it isn't 'bout who is more deserving - it's just about money.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Joss said Serenity would not be rereleased as a special edition. I hope they don't personally, I think it's an unfair marketting trick.

However they could easily make up a second disc, there's loads of stuff they could put on it. The River Tam Sessions for example.

I took the Joss quote (don't remember where it was from) as he wouldn't release a "Director's Cut" DVD, because the theatrical cut IS his Director's Cut.

This is probably the only time I wouldn't mind double-dipping on a DVD (and I detest the practice). The 2005 R1 release isn't exactly lacking in extras and it was really great to be able to gift it out for Christmas.

I figure an R1 Special Edition would have the R4 extras, the River Tam Sessions, the SciFi channel preview, and a cast commentary (at least).

As someone said above, Joss said there'd be no "Director's Cut", which does not rule-out a feature packed "Special Edition".

And when it comes down to it, the decision is up to the studio, not Joss. Universal could release 12 seperate versions if they chose to. Not that I'm expecting 12, but I absolutely expect a 2nd release. Universal is notoriouse for "Double (and even tripple) Dipping".

Both are better than the original art. I prefer the simple version too, but the R2 cover matches closely with the international posters. Hopefully this will help people who were interested by said posters, but ultimately didn't make the trip to the cinema, to identify it on the shelves, and thereby boost sales.

Hi, i was thinking of waiting for the uk release of serenity but i`ve noticed the running time is about 4 minutes shorter (115mins compared to 119mins). Does anybody know if this is correct and the film has been cut for the uk version (R2). If so i guess i`ll have to get an import version. If `Chronicles of Riddick` is anything to go by the cut version of that totally ruined a brilliant film.
cheers

It's not cut, it's just that PAL shows things 1/25th faster than NTSC.

Curious. When it says "Exclusive to Aussie dvd", does that mean it will NEVER be on another release besides that one, or are they just saying that out of the three versions available, this is the only one (right now) that has them?

Does that make sense?
