Allot of people didn't care for Serenity's darker tone and a few have voiced thier opinion that they were turned off by the movie. I myself was a bit shocked after watching the "Joss" typical humors banter filled series.

Now after watching it a few times (which I highly recommend) I found I really liked it and if it hadn't been made I may never have become a die hard fan. You see I'm a bit OCD (a sometimes useful disease, good for getting things done and being thorough hard on spouses thou ) so I had to of course buy the series before seeing the movie.

The down side is by the time I had finished watching the series Serenity was out of most theaters in my location and a I had to see it at a last chance theater.

The good news is by then me and my wife were fans, fans that may not be here if not for the exposure of the movie. Anyway to make a long story short ( I know to late ) I just wanted to know how many of you are here because of the movie.

Me!

Watched the movie, loved it, got the series, loved it even more. Watched the movie again, and realised it wasn't half as good as I first thought (because now I was comparing it to the series) but it still rocked :D

First time I saw Firefly, I wasn't that impressed. But that is of course because I first watched it half way through Out of Gas when it originally aired on FOX and it didn't make a lick of sense to me.

But ever since Space network has been airing it up here in Canada, and buying dvd's, I started converting anyone, no...everyone.

Let's just say that ever since Serenity has come out, my conversion rate has tripled and it seems like a crime how many peopled I have gotten to buy the dvd's.

This post may not have anything to do with the thread, but I think it relates...sort of.

I think you may be right I know it was said that Serenity was made so that anyone walking of the street could enjoy it fully. However I have to say having seen the series first really made Serenity much more emotionally stirring. Seeing the movie with out that emotional attachment and then watching the story backwards I have to say I would probably feel the same way. That and as Star War proved (lack of plot and bad acting aside) it's hard to really get into a story after you know how it turns out.

Yeah I first learned of serenity during a trailer for another movie (I don't remember which) and I looked at my friend and said yeah...we're watchin that when it comes out it looks awesome. So cut to months later the opening day...I have plans and am quite pissed 'cause I was really psyched to see it...the next week same thing...the third week I finally got a free moment and my friends all went to go see it. It was awesome. I loved it, but I took it at face value. I never knew there was...other venues for this verse until my friend enlightened me after the movie. He himself wasn't a fan but knew the movie was from the show. I promptly went home and downloaded all the eps (I couldn't find a box set anywhere). I loved them all. Then it was a hunt for the box set. I finally tracked one down and bought it immediately. Then the wait for Serenity on DVD...I've been at this board ever since 5 minutes after watching a downloaded version the train job, and I plan to be here when the series gets picked up again and when it leaves the air again with the grace and dignity it deserves.

I thought the movie was great. I have been a big Joss Whedon fan since the Buffy's first season, and I was very much looking forward to Firefly. However, I don't know if it was because of the way that Fox ordered the episodes or what, but I didn't care for it. It did get better eventually, but I didn't miss it. Not until recently, that is. The Serenity movie caused me to buy the Firefly box set and rewatch the episodes. I loved them this time around!!! I then rewatched the movie, and I still loved it as well.

I think it is a lot easier to convert someone by showing them the movie first. The series has a lot of slow parts that someone who isn't interested already might get bored with.

1. Heard about "Firefly" starting on TV a few years ago. Wasn't interested.

2. Saw the "Serenity" trailer in theatre this past summer. Trailer sold me on film. Made a note to see it on first day.

3. Saw a few episodes of "Firefly" during a Sci-Fi Channel marathon the week of the film's release. Enjoyed them immensely. Made me anticipate the film even more.

4. Saw "Serenity" on first day in theatre. Loved it. Tried to get various family to see it, but to no avail.

5. Continued watching "Firefly" on Friday night's on Sci-Fi.

6. Joined this forum in mid-December.

7. Bought the DVD the second day -- even though I don't have a DVD player (and had to watch it on my computer).

I guess I started with the movie. Sort of. See, I was getting into Buffy because of the FX repeats (which have been canceled, dammit) and was browsing online when I came across a trailer for Serenity. I watched it and went out and bought the Firefly series on impulse. Love ensued.

Been a fan since 2002. Been here since 2003. I was here before the movie was even a dream and seemed all was lost. I guess that makes me an old man.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I am a die hard fan because of the movie Serenity, and it is only by a slim chance that I was able to see it.

I thank my lucky stars...

Well said!! I myself saw the Series first, but I gave out 5 copies of Serenity as gifts and 4 of those people have now bought the series...They are not really scifi fans so I dont think they would have attempted watching the series...One note on comparing movie to series...Joss does a great job in all his shows of creating a family atmosphere with the main characters..In a way they become our family, and we really dont want to lose any family member...But in the one season of Firefly there might be too many mortal looking wounds that are easily patched...For the film to appeal to newcomers it would have been bad to everyone live..The crew is in mortal danger the entire movie ,someone has to die.. Not too mention that Firefly got cancelled after 1/2 of a season...If you look at another Whedon show Buffy ,he killed off no main characters at the close of season 1..But by the time Season 7 closed they had killed off 6 or 7 somewhat main characters...If Firefly had gotten more seasons its safe to say some of the crew would be dead...
Serenity was great movie , Firefly was a great show ...HUGE DIFFERENCE!!

NEVERED

me, in a sense

a freind is a fan, and he knew the movie was coming out, so he sat a few of us in front of the TV and had us watch the series, then we all went to see the midnight opening of the show ( )

if the movie hadn't come out, i may have never seen the show, but i did watch the series before seeing the movie

I remember thinking to myself when I saw the trailer:

"That looks kinda cool, but like most sci-fi stuff, it is probably going to be a horrible stinking piece of shit like the new star wars movies"

Glad my generalization was wrong, and finding out there was a series to watch too was the best surprise ever :)

Technically I became a fan after the movie came out, but I had always wanted to see the series, but seeing as how I didn't have cable (and my TV has this weird thing with fox not coming in *big loss, right?*) I couldn't watch it before.

But then the movie came out and so I bought the series on DVD and then bought the movie.

LOVE IT!

I didn't care that you left and abandoned me.

What hurts more is I would die for you.
