I absolutely loved the introduction of the ship in the Serenity movie! I can't imagine what it was like for a long suffering fan to first see the ship back and on the big screen.

That scene first opened with David Newman's soothing music and a view of "Serenity" written on the hull. When they then panned out and showed the whole ship, the reaction was like, "Ahhh, there she is". Then, all of a sudden, the music picked up as the rocket engines rotated downward. Then, blast!!! The rocket engines fired and it looked and sounded great in my home theatre system. After that, my favorite part came up when the camera swooped in next to the ship, and you could hear the ship rattling and the wind rushing around the hull. Then came the shot of Mal and Wash through the window before the piece of the ship flew off

I was just wondering if anyone had a similar reaction to that scene.

It definitely gave me chills.

Mal would kick Han Solo's ass.

I sat there in the theatre with a big ol' smile on my face and a tear in my eye.

That scene gave me goosebumps every time I saw it in the cinema. Got a bit emotional too.

Absolutely loved the wrap around shot. It was a brilliant moment. The movie score (especially for that scene) is gorgeous!

Yup, me too. But the person sitting next to me was not a browncoat, and I'm sure they thought I was some kinda nut. I guess I am!

One of my favorite parts of the movie. :)

I see it as very triumphant and I mentioned somewhere else, I kinda feel its sort of a Pheonix-like metaphor..the whole flame and rising from the ashes sort of thing. It just such a powerful and exciting introduction to the ship. The shot is fluid yet steady, trenquil, still in space and then once it enters atmo, that shake! Joss and his "right there" mentality! GAH! Love it! I love seeing Mal thru the window, sort if watching over things. I was competly new to the 'verse when I saw Serenity for the 1st time, and I think my jaw just dropped right there. The openening with the Op. kinda so-so for me...but the intro for for the ship. Oh man...

..and then all of a sudden the primary buffer panel flys off and the the mood instantly changes to what we are so used to from Firefly and your like "yeaaaaah." Then those 2 insainly long shots thru the ship...but thats a different story...

Hoplessly addicted but in that good sort of way. :)

I went in to see Serenity having never laid eyes on the TV show and knowing very little about the movie (some friend in another SciFi board recommneded it). My first impression of the ship was that it looked a little goofy with the long neck and head looking thing just sort of floating there. However, when the engines turned (like a Harrier jet) and it began to decend into atmo my impression changed very fast. The music, the dialogue, and the special fx in that sequence were top notch and hooked me right there. I guess that's where I became a browncoat.

That said, I still think the best Serenity shot is in the pilot episode when they are escaping from the reaver ship, those shots over the engine as they blow away from the surface of the planet are amazing.

I had the same feelings. The music was just so peaceful and...serene, even :) All those feelings of triumph, validation, love...and sadness. Whenever I listen to that tiny little 50 second track, all those feelings come gushing back. I was right there with yah, smile on my face and a tear in my eye. It was a good day to be a browncoat. Like the original poster mentioned, people who weren't browncoats since the beginning (I mean beginning as in F*X) probably can't appreciate it in the same way that we can :)

Browncoat since day 1 and proud of it,
Matt

I absolutely love that scene. That scene is for the Browncoats. So beautiful. That marks the first time I ever shed a tear at a movie. That music, the beautiful, oh so beautiful Serenity out in silent space, and that break into atmo with that music playing. It is by far one of my favorite scenes from any movie ever. I sometimes pop Serenity in just to watch that part. As a matter of fact, I think i'm going to go do that now. It sounds so absurd because i'm not the kind of person who obsesses over stuff like this, but that scene is just so beautiful. It gives me chills every time i see it.

I was really p----ed off, actually.Mainly because that moment is so perfect, that music so amazing, and there's only 50 seconds of it. Only 50 seconds of the Serenity theme! Just not fair. I want an extended cut of that song...

Loved the opening sequence, but...

In a lot of ways I was more impressed with what the Fox Productions crew did with much less money with regards to the look and feel of Serenity. This may be entirely down to lighting design. The warm amber glow of FIREFLY was much more effective IMO than the cold, blue, muted tones seen in SERENITY.

A previous reply mentioned the score. While the SERENITY score is rapidly growing on me, and at times was brilliant (I loved Book's introduction), on the whole I am partial to the musical backdrop of FIREFLY.

Good idea! Watching it right now!

My favorite part of the movie.... Serenity, then Mal. Yup. 'Nuff said.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

How can you not look @ a thread w/ a title like this one?

Yep, the opening shot of Serenity sent a chill up my spine. Kind of like seeing an old love again after a very long separation.

That is my favorite scene in the whole BDM. Brought a tear to my eye in the sneak preview I saw, even without any music. And it gave me chills down my spine EVERY time I saw it in the theaters. I love that ship!

Quick side note - the cello intro to that scene, before the Serenity theme; does that remind anyone else of the funeral theme from "The Message", or is it just me?

Serenity- "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. Whedon!"

That's what popped into my head a couple of times (like #3 and later viewings 8-)

I completely agree...every time I see that scene I get goosebumps and the hair stands up on the back of my neck. The first time I went cold all over when Serenity hit atmo, because not only is it stunning, it is also pretty realistic. And there is Mal and Wash not thinking a second thing of it...until the plating comes off.

The single-shot walkthrough of the ship not only introduces most everyone on Serenity, it introduces Serenity herself.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

It ain't just you, Darkjester.

Of course, that cello solo is introducing the main theme of Serenity, which we hear repeatedly in various forms throughout the rest of the movie.

One of my favorite variations is the dissonant, twisted version that plays as we first see the "Reaverized" Serenity with its new hood ornaments. Now that sends chills up my spine (spooky chills, not so much the good kind).

I don't disagree on any particular point.

That was my first thought to. I only discovered Firefly a month or so before the BDM DVD came out, so the DVD was the first time I saw it. Even a short timer like me got emotional on seeing her flying again.

And yeah, just like Joss to go from that wondeful opening shot to a part falling off, and here we go again!

America loves a winner!

Truly a special moment for me as well. I'm so glad for the DVD... just pop it in and check that scene out anytime. Also, the last scene w/ River and Mal..such a beautiful moment. Nice bookend to the movie, imo, as Serenity burst out of the strom clouds, sunlight hitting it as the music bursts into a climax of rolling.... *clunk* ....." what was that ? "

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

When I saw that introduction, I had in my mind the very clear image of thousands of put upon browncoats, assembled in one giant theatre, raising the rafters with their cheering.

Myself, I was in a distinctly average theatre and had to content myself with weeping gently into my popcorn.

Think I might have distressed the guy sat next to me with my decidedly visceral reactions to key points of the movie...

I particularly love the serene entrance and the way it is so superbly interrupted when she enters atmo, wow.

Music from the soundtrack should be extended tho.

I must say I equally adore the end of the film - passing through the storm - tear...
