If you could have been in charge of deciding what 2 characters were going to die in Serenity, who would you choose and why?

I think they picked the right 2.

I didn't want to see any of them die really. So here are the reasons why I agree with the two that did.

1. Wash's increasing complaining about Mal and the direction of the ship and the missions. He was really pushing Zoe to take a firmer hand with Captain Reynolds in regards to time off and mission safety. It was causing a serious conflict with Zoe and down the road was going to be a real problem for the entire crew. Killing Wash relieved that problem.

2. Shepard Book was having some real problems with the trouble the Capt and crew were constantly getting into. He was a good character to have on the ship. I would have liked to have found out more about him but it does open the door for another character to enter maybe some more muscle. The crew can always use more muscle.

This is my take on it anyway.

1. I think Wash was a right choice because he was the most sympathetic/nonconsequential kill. He had no significant arcs to fulfill. Also, I think it's about time to ante up the intrigue between Mal and Zoe...maybe explore some of their hidden history and throw another curveball at the Mal/Inara "will they? or won't they!" thingee. With Wash out of the way, we can have a full-on bizarre love triangle.

2. Simon. His death would have made River's arc development so much more compelling. Yeah, we would have never gotten the make-out session between him and Kaylee, but a death scene love confession could have made up for that.

Oh man.. good point about Simon. He was my alt choice for killing off. Then River could have gone full blown badass mad on the bad guys.

Actually, when I first heard that two main characters were gonna die (before I'd seen the movie), I thought about who he could have killed off. Book, Wash, and Inara were my possible choices. I seriously hoped I was wrong about Wash. Turns out I wasn't.

Don't get me wrong Chindi I'm not happy about them killing any of them. Your right there were still stories to tell.

Let's just hope if we get another movie Joss doesn't feel the need to punch a point home by wacking any more of the BDH's.

well, to be honest. I was down right pissed off at first. Even to the point were I was thinking it was a BS movie and I wasn't going to watch it again. It didn't have the comfortable feel of the show. There was even one point where I thought damn he is going to kill them all.

But of course my cooler head prevailed and with that comes cleared thinking I decided it was not the end of the verse.

Im betting we get another movie. With a bigger budget. The next movie will simply be amazing. I can't wait.

We will see the characters again. I have a faith.

Shouldn't this thread be titled with spoiler warnings? I know 90% of the people who come to this site have seen the movie dozens of times, but you gotta think of the newbies, the 10% who haven't

Just my thinkin'.

What happened? He see your face?

None.

Ok, well…

I feel I would have a different choice depending on if the TV series continued or the next installment was a sequel. If it were a sequel I would prefer to keep it like it happened.
Wash and Book.

Will Zoe crack?

Book can still be developed in the form of his reputation from his past and possible introductions of Book’s old cronies.

If it were a series, it would still be Wash

But I would switch Book with River…

Wha? Wait a minute!

U gonna be smart here Riva?!?

What happened? He see your face?

Whew! Anyway…

This would be even more unexpected than Wash or Book. I was blown away by those two getting killed. But one of the many great parts of the series was there was a mystery behind River. And I love(d) her antics. In a new series would she be a “Killer-Woman” in every situation…. Or would she save the day in the last minute on all their future jobs.
We all know the crew members are not normal, but they have that “everyday people” kinda feel. If it were a series I would like the scale of the show to remain the about the same.

Think of the character development that would ensue if all of them felt like something special had been taken from them. By the Alliance? By the Reavers who were created by the Alliance.

I know it ain’t gonna happen. But I love the improbable….

If it were a movie, let the scale explode. make River blow it up!

fascinating crappy question! made me squirm!

1. zoe: she doesn't really have a role on the ship except yes man and history marker. she would have done the same as book's death to mal- crisis of faith. the fact joss took wash instead of zoe makes me very worried about the preggo line of thought. i don't really see the bizarre love triangle tho.

2. kaylee: she didn't have the stories to tell that book did. she is an innocent who's never really fit with the crew. they need her to balance them, but with river's new coherency, she could've taken on that role.

and for the theme of the thread, take a look at this (it's not mine):

Well, I don't think that Kaylee would die. Joss has said that she's kind of his voice, the voice of innocence in the 'verse. I think she's kind of his mouthpiece when he needs one. As such, I imagine she's largely bulletproof (Dobson notwithstanding.)

As for my personal choices, I think that the deaths as presented give the most story potential. Zoe didn't really have much by way of character, and now, suddenly, there's some real meat to be had with her arc. As for Book, well, I sincerely doubt that we won't see him again, at least as some sort of hologram recording. No way we've seen the last of the Shepherd.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

Well, I'm all right. - Mal

River and Jayne.

It's not the actors - Summer's smile when she says "That's the popular theory." in Objects is one of my very most favorite moments, and there's no disputing the Adam.

No River however, means my suspension of disbelief isn't batterd with super-powered superheroes. As for Jayne, he sold out River to the people who tortured her, for, years - what is he still doing on the ship?

The 2 characters I wanted to be killed off least was Wash and Kaylee, tho I can understand why Wash was spiked - you're not sure who's gonna be offed next if Joss is not afraid to take out Wash, and that upped the tension for the movie. These 2 are the anti-superheroes - not people who make history doing the impossible. I wanted to see their stories.

I have no problems with Joss' writing of 'Serenity'
it was painful and intense, but I hung on every word

I thought this thread was about the sequel...
now in the sequel I expect Inara & Mal to hook up and then Inara will die a painful horrible death in Mal's arms....

But I'm not sure who'll die in some random killing to make us all scream and tear our hair because we didn't see it coming....

of course I expect Book to be back in a flashback or two during the sequel.
And Wash will be back in Zoe's dreams, making her nuts.

I agree that the sequel should show ud Inara and Mal getting together and I can see Joss killing her shortly after that too. I think you're right that we will see more of Book in flashbacks or holograms even, but I'm not sure we will see very much of Wash at all. Just a feeling, I guess.
