Does anyone know which version of "Serenity" will be on the DVD? The good one or the hack job that FOX showed?

Well pardon me for coming to the party late, but I needed to get a shiny new dress. Now, what is this about two version of Serenity? I know of a couple of filmed but omitted scenes, such as the one with Zoe and Simon, but I never got the sense there were enough changes to constitute different versions of the episdoe. What's the story there?

And I would like to see the Zoe/Simon scene added to the DVD version of the show, but I could live without it.

I think I recall hearing that it'll be the one that was aired, but with the few scenes that where cut included as a ‘deleted scenes’ type special feature (as some of them would have required additional special effects that were never done).

Well, I don't know about "hack job," but I thought the only difference was the whole war scene at the beginning of the episode, which was added later at the behest of fux. In Joss's vision, the episode was supposed to start with them performing the illegal salvage operation. But I guess that was too boring. At least, that is the way I understand it. Someone set me straight if I'm wrong.

The version FOX showed is the real version. The one prviously floating around the internet was just a preliminary edit. The version FOX showed will be on the DVD.

Fox Home Entertainment might put it as two seperate episodes, or as one presentation. They broke up the Buffy premiere (Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest) for its DVD release but kept the two-part sixth season premiere (bargaining) as one feature. I don't really have a preference on this one; I'm sure some of you have opinions, though; but I think it's pretty much a 50/50 thing that you can't predict.

yeah, the battle scene in the beginning was filmed later on, to have the episode start off more exciting and to add background.
in the original version we only here about the battle second hand (zoe's history lesson to Simon, which was later cut).
I honestly think it was a fine change. because those of us that had been watching the show up to that point already knew about the battle, so it was cool to see a bit of it. And if you hadn’t watched up to that point, it still added the appropriate background info.

There are many differences, some major some subtle. This is what I remember off the top of my head.

The aired version starts with the Battle of Serenity Valley, the unaired starts with the salvage job.

In the unaired version after Mal asks Jayne for the skicky he says 'OK Jayne, how bout before we get caught'. This line was removed from the aired version.

The whole crybaby scene was not in the unaired version.

Mal's discussion with Wash and Zoe about Inara is completly different between the 2 versions and can not co-exist (IOW its not an extended version its an alternate version)

In the unaired version after Kaylee says she would like to get a new compression coil, Mal asks Wash to find a compression coil. This line was not in the aired version.

Book's encounter with the wrangler for the Brutus is only in the aired version. As a result, Book says to Kaylee, "I'm not a grandpa" only in the aired version.

The scene when Book goes to Inara's shuttle is another alternate take between the 2 versions. Also, the aired version is longer.

The scene where Mal hits Simon in the hall outside the dinning area is only in the aired version.

In the aired version the scene where Mal and Jayne talk to Dobson takes place before the Reavers encounter. In the unaired it takes place after. As a result, Mal's lines are different. In the unaired version he says 'On one side I got mindless savages like to kill me as far. And on the other I got the law. Not sure which I like less' This wouldnt make sense in the aired version so his lines were 'Got me a boatload of terribly strange folk making my life a little more interesting than I generally like, chief among them an Alliance mole. Likes to shoot at girls when he's nervous.' This is another alternate take. In both versions there was focus on Mal when he said the lines and it looks like he is actually saying them in both, not that it was dubbed in one.

The unaired version contains the scene where Book goes to the infirmary to prey for Kaylee and suggests to Simon he look up the history of Serenity. This is followed by Simon looking it up in his quarters and Zoe comes in to say how it really was. NOTE: there is a longer version of this scene at the FOX website http://origin.fox.com/firefly/spoilers.htm Also, the script pages for this scene has even more dialog. (this scene should have been in the aired version IMHO)

The scene where Kaylee wakes up and Mal talks to her is longer in the aired version.

Thats all I can remember.

But I've seen script pages that has Dobson saying hes glad that they are being delayed cause hes meeting his sister-in-law and shes a dragon of a woman. This is not in either version.

Where did you get the script pages from I want em. Need em. Gotta to have them.

I hope that the version on the DVD is longer and includes Book praying and the subseqquent history lesson of Simons.

I think you've got some wires crossed there...The version that FOX showed was the best version. I downloaded the original pilot, and frankly it kinda sucked. It was good for some background information and clarifications, but not that good. The aired version had way more scenes and a much better cohesive plotline. There were only a couple scenes that were deleted only beause the new ones made more sense. BTW, the 'hack-job' version of Serenity that was shown on FOX was nominated for an Emmy; Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series, to be specific.

The script pages are on the same site: http://origin.fox.com/firefly/spoilers.htm

There are pages from other eps as well, including pages from Our Mrs Reynolds where River talks. She had no lines in the aired version of OMR.

If you want full versions of the scripts, Haken will be posting them eventually. DO NOT bug Haken about them, though. Be patient.

About 'Serenity', hell there are a lot of things different from the original script which was a hash of both of the edits with a couple of omitted scenes. Most noteably the funny, disarming Dobson scene. The press edit (The un-aired version.) and the aired Serenity. There are also different Patience, Badger, and Alliance Commander conversations between each. Ultimately the version that aired was the better version. But I did like the Book-Inara scene in the press edit better and the Zoe-Simon-Battle of Serenity Valley conversation.
