I haven't been able to read the extended stories past where the series left off, and there's one thing that has been bothering me. Did Mal ever sell off the Lassiter? Was it worth the trouble?

I bought it from him. I have it right here. It don't shoot and I'm trying to find a lithium battery with a high enough output to get it workin again but so far no luck.

I always fancied that they must have, since otherwise how could they have been able to afford that fancy-shmancy new Mule? Here's my theory:

Mal and company have this priceless, universally known artifact on their hands. No one will buy it, because that means never telling anyone you have it, and what's the point of that? After a month or two of fruitlessly searching for a buyer, the screens blank out on the bridge and are replaced by Mr. Universe. He's caught wind of their cargo ("everything goes somewhere, and I go everywhere"), and buys it. I like this idea for a couple of reasons:

1) The problem with selling the thing is as stated above: you can't fence it 'cause it's universally known. This means either a) the potential buyer turns you in, or b) the potential owner can't show it to anyone, ever. Mr. Universe solves both because he doesn't care about their being on the not-so-legal side of the law. Also, he obviously doesn't give a damn if anyone else ever sees the thing (after all he lives alone with a lovebot).

2) It would explain the brand new mule, improved landing gear, and over-all shiny condition of Serenity (absent the primary buffer panel, of course).

3) It would explain why the crew has access to Mr. Universe, even though we never see him in the series.

And of course, being the ultimate uber-hacker, he wouldn't have to pay in actual money. He'd just hack a big deposit into some account somewhere (undoubtedly at a branch of the Blue Sun Bank).

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Actually what I think really happened is that Cappy had another one of his bleeding heart moments after finding out what a decent schlump the guy was they stole it from. Much to Jayne's shigrin, Mal mailed the Lassiter back to him.

According to the movie novelization, Mal did sell the Lassiter and purchased the new mule with the money.

Uh, really sorry to break up the debate, but I think I remember in the Serenity novelization that Mal did manage to sell the Lassitor, and he did buy the new hover-mule with the cash, but he didn't sell it to Mr. Universe. They knew Mr. Universe through Wash, who had come out of flight school second in his class. He found out the computer hacker had changed the grades just so he could call himself a pilot. Wash blackmailed him, and has been calling him up whenever he or the crew need insider information.

The book also explains where Mr. Universe got all that fancy equipment, and his own planet. The Alliance was busy terraforming the planet a while back, and Mr. Universe made their computers tell them that the terraformng machines were failing and they had to evacuate. They ran away, he moved in.

I don't know about you guys, but I think it would have been nice to put that last bit of info in the movie somehow, just so the character would seem less sterotypcal, give Mr. Universe a little cred.

Definitely - totally agree. Would I be assuming correctly that the novelization occured after-the-fact of the script's finalization &, who knows how much of the movie had already been shot by the time the noveliztion came about, eh? Of course, had they actually done it, I can just hear Joss's commentary voiceover on the DVD now... (ahem)... "Why we didn't cut this I just don't know; any fool can see this doesn't advance or service the story. I must have just wanted to go wandering off to some other cool little planet full of video games, lovebots and whatnot... and that's yet one more reason why I've got to find another director: the one I've BEEN working with hasn't been working out. Working with yourself can be the biggest disappointment; no good can come of it."

Correctly answer the question "Is it better to work with yourself or play with yourself(?)" "or your friends will think you're a stupid, inbred stack of meat."

OK, I wasn't go to say so, but you've forced my hand. I found the novelization's explanation of Mr. Universe completely uncompelling. I thought that a lot more could have been done with the origins story (hence the idea about the Lassiter).

Plus, you assume that the novelization is canon. Which it's not. Hence Mr. Universe=fair game.
