PAINISSCARY

Okay, peeps, here's the 411 on the final day of Flanvention 2005. So much great stuff to report (and this time, I brought some paper and a pen to jot down some notes), that I'll probably do it in shorter segments rather than one long post.

Let's start with was the highlight in a weekend of highlights...

the last panel of the day, featuring the whole cast (sans Gina) and the Feldman twins. Soon after taking the stage, Nathan stands and addresses the crowd, saying he wants to acknowledge the man who made it all possible, without whom none of them would have worked together, Joss.

"He's a drunk and he's a dick. (Crowd cracks up) And if he were here, he'd tell you the same thing... he's not a kind man..."

And suddenly, who should appear through the door, but Joss himself, taking the stage to thunderous applause and a standing o.

One of the first questions asked of Joss was what he's working on now. "It's called 'I hate myself and I want to die (there was more to it, but can't recall... something about being old and having lost it)" "Is there a part for me in that?" Nathan wanted to know. "It's actually about you," shot back Joss. Joss talked about writing Wonder Woman and having a hard time with it. Also mentioned having to get started on more X-Men comics.

Someone asked why everything Joss does has strong women with superpowers in it (Joss has made jokes about his inability to do anything that doesn't have a strong woman with superpowers in it). He joked that "all women have the power... to turn me down." He also said that "Women who are strong are cool, and that's just me. (i.e., that's his thing, what he likes to write about).

Responding to a question about writing, Joss concluded that writers should "watch everything, steal from everyone, and only write things you care deeply about."

Asked about any encounters with crazy fans, or any funny fan-encounter stories, most of the cast said they didn't really have any stories; Adam summed it up best when he graciously said of us fans, "I think they're all great... so sweet and wonderful."

After Sean and Morena said they didn't have any stories, Joss jumped in with "What I'm hearing here is a failure on your (the audience's) part. We come here so we can go to dinner parties and make fun of you.

Nathan encouraged Summer to tell the "Cherokee Princess poem" story, but she refused, with an impassioned "Nathan, no!" Nathan kept at her, "Freaks are coming after you all the time!" Then, he imitated Summer, "What do I do?" Then as Nathan, "Call the cops!"

Jewel decided to relay one funny fan story, even after Nathan (I think) asked her "Are you sure he's not in the room?" Jewel said she once met a fan who was so excited to meet her, he farted. He was embarassed and pretended it didn't happen, and so did she, to be nice, but afterward, she couldn't stop laughing.

Nathan asked Joss about a woman that came up to him and burst into tears, but Joss said he thought that was sweet. Jewel added, "The fart was sweet too." Nathan had to ask, "Do you mean 'that was sweet' or [pretending to smell the fart] 'that was sweet?'

Someone asked about Book's past and whether we'd ever learn the details. Nathan remembered the guy from the previous day (he'd asked a similar question and Nathan had refused to divulge any details, since he knew Joss still hoped to tell more FF stories), and said, faux angrily, "What'd I tell you yesterday?")

Joss said that if he couldn't continue the FF 'verse with the cast (i.e., in more movies), then barring that, he'd do it in a comic book or novels, and barring that, a blog. He concluded answering the question by saying "Someday, you will know what I'm going to take the time to make up later."

Near the end of the final panel, Nathan, who'd been eating throughout the panel, stood, and said he wanted to explain why he was eating on stage ("It's very rude," Sean joked). Nathan said he'd gone home to get us all a gift, then asked for the lights to be dimmed.

And on both monitors at the front corners of the room began to play the uncensored and quite hilarious Serenity gag reel (too much to relay here, but a few highlights were Mal looking at Mr. Universe's "hard to get to" transmitter, considering how he was going to get across the chasm, then saying, "Ah, fuck it," and turning to exit.

Also delightful was a montage of cast and crew dissing poor Summer (which was a running gag with the cast on the series -- blaming Summer for everything that went wrong). And in an ad lib following his rescuing the crew from the Reavers after the skiff chase, Alan as Wash said, re Zoe, "I'm gonna tap that ass... I'm gonna get behind those meat curtains and put on a one-man show... and an encore." After the reel, Alan joked that because of that clip, the reel would likely not show up unexpurgated on the DVD.

The gag reel ended with what looked liked a plaster cast of Nathan's head with devil horns (might have been him as Caleb from Buffy) rising into frame and a hand (presumably Nathan's) coming up with its middle finger extended (a running Gag between Nate and Jewel).

Soon after the gag reel concluded, Nathan announced that it was time for them to go, and he and the cast bid us farewell, as the audience stood and applauded and cheered. The cast all looked tired, but nonetheless appreciative of all the love and attention.
