Hi.

First, is the Operative truly finished and out of our BDHs' lives? I've always interpretted his exit at the end of Serenity as him going off screen to throw himself upon his sword. Or is this unlikely now that he has seen the error of his ways?

Second topic: Jubal Early. First off, he's named after a Confederate general and is played by a black actor. I've been looking for some explanation of this for a while now, and still haven't found one. Secondly, I am surprised to see so many people expecting him to make a triumphant return. Why?[It reminds me in no small part of peoples' obsession with Boba Fett.] Being stuck in interplanetary space without a spaceship, I'm afraid he's as dead as Crow. [Yes, Crow's dead, too.]

Welcome to the board! It appears you can spell, punctuate and parse correctly; that's a good sign.

First, I think it's possible that The Op could become a Book-like character in future installments; but I think it'll be problematic getting Chewitel re-signed for the gig. He's got a booming career. Still, I'd like to see him in at least a recurring cameo. You know: Mal needs the straight scoop from a reliable source, maybe a string or two pulled. The Op could now be his 'go to' guy, similar to Book or Mr. Universe, both of whom are likewise corpsified. I think righting his past wrongs could be his reason to continue living.

Second, I played football with a black guy named Andrew Jackson. His nickname? "Stonewall". Lots of black guys have last names taken from (forced upon them by?) their wealthy slave owners, whom were heavily involved in politics/military leadership in the antebellum South. Why are you having such a hard time getting your head wrapped around that particular point? It's commonplace in the U.S. Have none of your friends ever discussed their families' "slave names" with you?
(NB: And lest we forget, if you're of European ancestry and your last name is Baker, Chandler, Cooper, Fletcher, etc., those are your families' slave names, heh-heh.)

At any rate, yours is a very good first post. I hope to hear from you a lot on the GenDis Board. I like discussing stuff, if in a somewhat devilish fashion...

Operative: Mal has pretty well shattered his world view. If he's no longer the fanatical believer, he no longer has motivation to fall on his sword. The deleted scene from Serenity hints at this -- he asks Mal how it's possible to go on after losing everything. That shows that he's at least contemplating going on.

Early: The story is that Nathan Fillion is a remote descendant of the Civil War general Early. The character may have been named as a nod to that rather strange circumstance. There don't seem to be many parallels between our Jubal and the historical one, otherwise.

Joss has stated in an interview, "I know that he (Jubal Early) is alive." There are plenty of ways he might have been rescued: distress beacon to summon help, remote control for his own ship, another ship (rival bounty hunter?) also tailing Serenity, etc.

In any case, Joss doesn't lightly throw away good characters. That doesn't mean that truly dead characters will be exhumed, necessarily, but after all, Early is very much alive when we last see him.

Oh, almost forgot: welcome to the board! Hope you enjoy your new home...

I assume the Operative would take to a life of wandering until he finds a new purpose. As much as I loved Mr. Ejiofor's performance, I believe it would feel forced if the character were ever to appear again.

And people enjoy the character of Early because he was basically Joss making good on his promise from the start of the show: no bigger-than-life villians. The series unfortunately began with rather hokey, generic ones (Niska/Crow) and dealt with them accordingly, but ended with a complex, odd character. His actions may have been repellent, but he was terrifically interesting and would make a compelling recurring character.

Nathan mentioned his distant ancestor to Joss and Joss named the character after it. It is just that simple.
