Hello all!
I was curious if anyone has read the Serenity movie novel. I am curious if it is any good. I have seen mixed reviews and am tempted to buy it anyway since it is Serenity. Also, I read at the back of the Serenity Visual Companion that there are going to be more books based on the crew. I want to know when these will start becoming available. If for no other reason, because they are Serenity and I cannot get enough!!

The novelization is nice enough for background info, getting a tiny smidge of extra dialogue plus a variety of neat scenes that got deleted from the movie (part of which will be on the DVD). It gives a more complete picture of the plot of the movie. Some details are explained, which is nice. (The new Mule, for one.)

However, it's no thrilling character examination nor does it reveal any secrets that the move doesn't about the characters or their relationships. It does somewhat immitate the character voices when examining their POV, which is nice, but it also builds in a LOT of background info, without the charming appeal of watching that same information in the episodes.

Basically, it's good for plot and facts, but it lacks that ambiguious depth and charm of seeing it play out on screen.

If the show had to be continued in book form, I'd want a more compelling, personal kind of writing to be used. It's no replacement. Even comics are much better.

If you look for R. A. DeCandido at amazon, you'll see that he has a Serenity/Firefly-related book coming out in.. July? June? Some such date. But I have no idea just what that is supposed to be about.

Other than that, I have no idea.

RKLENSETH

There are plans for two more Serenity novels at the moment. I believe one of them is going to written by R. A. DeCandido who wrote the movie novelization. The other one has yet to be decided who is going to write it (my hopes are Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman jumping into the 'verse).

Joss Whedon will also be starting a Serenity Comic line through Dark Horse as well during the Spring and Summer.

There is also a new Serenity expansion coming out for Margaret Weis' Serenity roleplaying game coming out in February which will be written by Tracy Hickman.

There are also Firefly Trading Cards coming out by the same people who made the Serenity Trading Cards.

So there are still things going well for the franchise. It ain't the movie sequels or new TV series but if all these things do well I'm sure Universal Studios or 20th Century Fox will see this as a drop in the bucket as to how strong the franchise is and can be in the future.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.
