There's a thread over on Gossi's board with the Timeline for events surrounding Firefly/Serenity, for the upcoming "Done The Impossible." It's an interesting read, for old and new fans. As he asks, If you notice anything missing help him out.

Here's a curious thing - our beloved forum here went live a whole month before the first day of filming. I think I need Haken to come with me to buy lotto tickets.

Yeah, it's actually a really interesting read if you go into the archives and read the original posts leading up to Firefly's debut. You get a lot of insight into what was going on in an almost play-by-play environment. Not quite like being there, but still *extremely* interesting, at least to me =p

Its an especially good explanation of why Firefly was cancelled. The reality TV phenomenon (which the big TV networks are still dealing with) promised programming of radically reduced costs with increased ratings. Contrast the cost structure of Firefly with a reality series and you can understand the lack of support for Firefly. Firefly became a casualty of a fad.

I think in the long-term many of the networks will see the reality craze as wasted time. I'm not going to comment about the lack of quality of these series. But let's talk about where eventually money will be made from shows: DVDs and their successors. All these reality shows create very little ancillary sales. In the future I don't believe TV networks will want programming that they can't create streams of money in the future. What reality shows is something akin to sports programming. Its great filler but it has to be used to create buzz for the things that will make money for the networks in the long-run.

That said I do think that networks don't use DVDs correctly for sports and reality network programming. They should have DVD-R editions of all this type of programming available for sales and rental (Netflix) so that people will never feel like they missed that game (or that episode). If someone misses last weeks show they should call an 800 number and they should be able to get episode.

The networks should get together (or buy part of Netflix) so that mailed rentals become a sort on-demand service. Revenue would be shared based on rentals made divided by the subscription price.

So how would a work with a network. Let's say that you missed last weeks "Lost". You call ABC for the episode. They will gladly sell you the episode for $9.99. They place the order and use Netflix to fill the order by creating a DVD-R version of the episode and popping it in the mail from one of their distribution centers. They give Netfix half the money from the sale of the episode for that service.

However, another option is that you rent the episode from Netflix and you are a $9.99 (single rental plan) subscriber. Let's say that your rented four DVDs that month. Only one of which was an ABC episode ("Lost") At the end of the month Netflix takes gives one-half of one-fourth of the subscription cost to ABC.

I think that the window of opportunity for a service like this has passed. It would be too expensive to burn the discs, even on rewritable media, and the production runs would be too low for sporting events and the like to get any real economies of scale. Besides, most people wouldn't pay $10 for a single game, and the ones who would will most likely have Tivo'd it.

On the other hand, I can absolutely see someone spending 2 bucks to download an episode or game from iTunes. It'd be significantly cheaper, incurs little to no material cost, and you can get an episode in a matter of minutes rather than ordering it and waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

Along with Netflix for movies, I see iTunes and similar services (are there any?) as a force to be reckoned with for media distribution. It's going to be huge. Better still, it would allow shows like our beloved Firefly to go straight to their audience without incurring as much network overhead. Who cares if the fan base is (relatively speaking) small, if they're loyal enough to shell out a few bucks each episode? You could even subscribe to a TV series in the same manner that podcasts are subscribed to now.

The infrastructure is already in place, and the transition has already begun. This can only be good for us!

If you missed the episode of "Lost" hop on over to iTunes and download it for $1.99...

I missed "desperate housewives" last week and I downloaded iTunes in a minute and got the episode in less than 10 minutes...

I hope they offer 24 soon, just in case I miss an episode.

I just want the ability to download TV shows from iTunes full-stop... apple australia is dragging their heels there.. and when they do get it up and running, it's bound to be dross like Home and Away, Neighbours, McLeods (useless) Daughters, and All Saints.

In reading that I was reminded that Rebecca Gayheart was the original Inara. Poor girl, just can't keep a job. If you're a fan of Dead Like Me, you'll remember she only lasted a few episodes on there too. I wonder what her problem is.

First time on the boards guys. First time on A posting anywhere to be honest.(Hope it doesnt show to much).

I think you are on the right track with the netflix deal.My take on it as Theatre sale continue to go down. DVD and on demand sales will continue to rise. People are able to equip their homes with near theatre quality equipment meaning no more dealing with idiots at the theatre no more $5.00 cokes no more uncomfortable seats. We sit at home with or without company paying only for the entertainment.

That said the big 3 ( ABC CBS NBC ) and orther affiliates if they are smart will either buyout DVD services or Create their own.( I see Blockbuster as being the more vulnerable.)With HDTV affordable and holograms in the works this is the future.

I have not yet seen any of the Firefly series, I just recently watched Serenity. I was so blown away, I looked for websites on the subject, something I've never done before and order the firefly season on DVD. One question why the Sci-fi channel has'nt approached FOX on the show

I've never heard a good explanation of it. I think Joss is big into cast chemistry and it didn't quite gel with her and the rest of the cast. But I don't think that anyone has ever given an elaborate explanation. But maybe this speaks to the politeness of the cast in general. They haven't really ever said anything bad about any other member of the crew other than general teasing.

Oh how I almost wish I was you and could watch Firefly for the first time again (and then the second, and third and.....) If just seeing Serenity was enough to get you on the board,,,watch out for the Firefly DVDs. I was actually in such a state when they were done that I found this board and posted my spiral into addiction story (also had never posted on anything before) and bought the DVDs, books, t shirts (I cant stop!)

I am curious what you might think..seeing the shows after the movie....the movie is a continuation of the series but it still took me a while to "get there" with it (maybe it was just because it was the last thing...now I love the movie just as much as my shows)

Welcome!

I'll be happy to giv eyou my thoughts as I devour the DVD series. It's so difficult to get A Sci-fi series to really get down and dirty. Meaning most put to much stock in special effects. Most of the better writters do'nt seem to want to touch them or they are so sanitized as to seem like A Walt Disney production. In this age os bottom of the barrell reality shows(which are anything but) Firefly/Serinity have an uphill battle but one worth winning. The Dvds are on their way. Feal free to express your views to A latecomer to the game....Jerry

The first Season Dvd's are on the way. I have no problem with taking your advise, over and over and over. The only other show I can remember getting A full length motion picture after the show was cancelled, was Star Trek and while I enjoy A little Star Trek now and then. MY instincts tell me this show is heads and shoulders above the trekkie world........Jerry
