Sorry to tell you, but the DiCaprio/Luhrman Alexander movie (which never started shooting)died before the Farrell/Stone one even finished shooting.

As for 5 gay movies in 2 years, perhaps it's just a matter of our society becoming more accepting to homosexuals. And maybe Hollywood is pushing it a bit further than that level of acceptance, but that isn't really that uncommon.

Just like prominent Black characters were beginning to show up in films as the civil rights movement was gearing up. Or maybe that was to liberal at the time, too.

It's been around for years.
The porn shows have been showing manmanerotica for years.
Now Hollywood wants it main stream to make more money off the curious and the large source of money out there.
They are finding an untapped market to make more millions.
It's not art it's money grubbing hack and more millions for the corrupt.

and you and I pay for it ..or not.

That's why great movies like Serenity fall away into obscurity.
It isn't about poor gay guys It's about how much can we exploit from something new and taboo.
I personally came from a different childhood were the heroes were clean cut and honorable and loved women and their horses.
Serenity was heaven sent for me.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Well, that’s the way it will be dressed up in any event. And that’s basically what I’m talking about. After all one can’t really pat oneself on the back for one’s own supposed loving tolerance unless one first can convince oneself that everyone else is a bigot.

Storymark, Hi. I never said that "no one" wanted to go see it. I said that they are alienating a large demographic of their potential audience with the subject matter. I mean, let's say there are 1,000,000 people in a given area (just for illustrative purposes), and you make a film which is going to offend 200,000 of them (again, just making up a number for illustrative purposes), you've already lowered your potential audience by 20%. That's just not good capitalism.
If the idea is to make money, you want EVERYONE to come see it, and not start off by handicapping yourself. Right?

Okay, while I see your point, I have to disagree. While the film industry is a business, most filmmakers do consider themselves artists, especially one like Lee, who goes out of his way to make an entirely different film each time out (from Jane Austen, to the Civil War, to 70's swingers, to kung-fu to a big green superhero). And he made this one outside of the bottom-line driven Hollywood system. And art, rarely if ever, is designed to appeal to everyone.

Those things that are made just to get the ticket money of as many people as possible are by definition, appealing to the lowest common denominator. And striving for that low is what has led us to so much crap in the world of film (and TV).

Brokeback may not be your thing, and may not appeal to the majority of Americans, but that does not nessesarily mean it is without merit or undeserving of awards.

All this debate is really the reason I want to see it. I'm generally not interested in love stories, much less one between two gay cowboys (not even a fan of westerns, really). However, there is so much debate going on, and so many attacks against the film by people who have not seen it (I don't mean you, or others on this board in particular, but in general), that I want to form my own opinion of it, good or bad.

i'd have to agree with this, at least in terms of the "hollywood is a big joke" theme. it's all garbage. every once in awhile, something good wins by accident, or because it makes a lot of money. hollywood is a huge incestuous cesspool of mediocrity. obviously, there are talented people in the industry, it would be stupid to say otherwise, but mostly it's about who you know, how much money you have, and how willing you are to abandon all principles you have.
i have not seen "brokeback", but i read the short story and i liked that. i just can't imagine heath ledger being good enough in anything to warrant this kind of buzz. the good part is, if you don't like this particular agenda, just wait for five minutes. they'll have a new one.

I'm sick and tired of this shit... Oooh 5 movies were made with ghey references were made in the past 2 years... It's not like movies and TV shows and plays haven't been doing it for years before hand...

4 of which of the addressed movies that came out in the past 2 years are Independent. If I were you I'd be f*cking applauding the Academy for nominating and awarding the amount of Independent films that are being made. Something that didn't exist 3 years ago... even.

Yes... this year lots of movies will be snubbed... in fact it's the largest dose in awhile
Like... Serenity and Sin City...

Finally... why didn't the orginal poster complain about the scene with Inara... what because it was "Hawt".
