I watched Out of Gas and I noticed that River is not limited to sensing just thoughts and emotions. She said 'Fire' before there was any indication that the ship was on fire.

I watched OMR again (it was a two Firefly night) and as they were heading into the net, Jayne asks Mal if he should aim for a window and Mal tells him no, it might kill someone. After Jayne disables the net it looks like he moves the gun and intentionally puts several shots into the window. Mal never says anything about it. I wonder why.

TZEGHA

I just always assumed that she could sense the future a bit, only a few seconds in advance, in addition to being a reader.

As for OMR, I just figgered that Mal had meant for Jayne to save his ammo in case he missed the first go. But since he didn't, Jayne could waste his ammo any way he saw fit.

I also watched OMR last night--showed it to someone who'd never seen Firefly actually-- and noticed a couple new things.

When they're leaving Triumph, as the ramp is rising and Mal is waving, Zoe's waving backwards with her hand heald really high as she's shutting stuff up.

Then, when Kaylee is comforting Saffron with the "He's like a monster" line, Jayne's hand creeps into the frame and he kind of rubs Saffron's shoulder with his knuckles.

All y'all probably saw those long ago, but I was interested.

As for Jayne shooting out the window of the carrion house, I think it makes a lot of sense. His first idea is to shoot the window to kill the people that would kill them. Since that won't insure their survival, he shoots out the breakers and then shoots out the window. Bonus.

There used to be a thread like this about little nuances and stuff you never noticed until you'd watched an episode about 150 times. Good to have another one up front. Unless you wanted this to be entirely about OMR, in which, sorry for the implied proto-hijack.

BLACKSTAR

In OMR, Jayne asks if he should aim for the windows, and Mal replies "That might kill some folk, but it won't disrupt the net." As I saw it, Mal didn't really care if Jayne killed the net operators or not, he just wanted to make sure the net was down... keep flying, first, everything else, second.

Has anyone noticed that River seems to actually get worse as the episodes progress? It seem that in "Serenity" she was limited to muttering and crying. In Train Job she through some stuff and in Safe she yelled and cursed a bit. It wasn't until Ariel that she actually harmed anyone, to wit Jayne a la butcher knife. In Wargames, she shot dead 3 of Nyska's men cold, and in OiS she removes a gun from Jayne's locker and commandeers Jubal's ship(though arguably that wasn't crazy behavior). I dunno, maybe it's nothing, but I was wondering what y'all think.

Oh, my GOD! Who's flying this thing! Oh, right, that would be me...

I figured that was character development. Up until Ariel, Simon hadn't been able to treat her. After he figured out what was wrong with her, he was able to treat her better. In Wargames and OIS I think her actions were fairly sane (sorta). There was a valid reason for her actions.

In OIS, River thinks she's surrounded by autumn leaves, holding a tree branch, when it's in fact a loaded gun? Fairly sane?

I suppose you are mostly right. The rest of the episode she plays hero. Simon becomes the one hard to look after.

I don't think she's getting any saner - I reckon that what is happening is that she's becoming more aware of and better able to cope with what's been done to her - so her experiences become more extreme (the whole tree/gun thing) but she's also able to work through them, which is what happens in the rest of OIS. It's a continuation of what happens War Stories where she was able to be a normal girl for a while but then sank back into the madness because of Zoe's grenade story.

OUTLAWTEXAN

Actually, I think what appears to be "getting worse" could actually be the first steps to getting better. As was mentioned, Simon at this point is only beginning to be able to treat her, and, as with psychiatric treatments now, the patient often goes through ups and downs as various types of treatments are tried.

If medical science, in general, hasn't changed much between now and then (and it doesn't seem that it has, at least out on the fringes where Serenity flies), with the obvious changes such as new scanning techniques and other better equipment, a lot of treatment, especially regarding the brain, is a lot of trial and error within certain known perameters.

In the episode 'Safe,' River says, "Time to go.," Just before Serinity flys overhead.

Did anyone notice in the Pilot episode (after the escape from the Reavers), Wash is at the flight controls, apparently holding the control yoke, except there is nothing in his hands?

We got you partially surrounded.

Oh yeah. And once you've seen it, you can't unsee it. Nathan Fillion has posted on the Fox board, saying something to the effect of: "All will be explained in the DVD commentary."

Interesting to me also was OutlawTexan's statement of causality from War Stories. That Zoe's grenade story caused River to regress. Did anybody else think this? It's an interesting perspective and totally new to me. I always figured her medicine wore off.

It's like a lot of River's statements - they mean one thing until you've seen the rest of the episode and then they mean something else entirely! Like in Ariel, where she's struggling with Simon saying she doesn't want to go back, and Simon thinks she just means back to Serenity when what she actually means is the bunch of Feds waiting round the corner...

One of the many reasons why I can't wait to get the DVD - this show deserves a lot of re-watching!
