Sorry if this has been posted before but I was wondering if anyone whose read the Firefly comics could give some feedback. I'm a fairly new Firefly fan but I've already devoured every special feature and commentary track on the DVDs, purchased both soundtracks, the Serenity visual guide and Finding Serenity, and I need more Firefly!! I'm not much of a comic fan however, and a few of the things I love most about Firefly are the way the actors deliver their lines and interact with each other, which will of course be missing from the comics, as well as the music and filming style that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. However, the comics are written by Joss and I need more Firefly to consume, desperately, before I go crazy and start dressing like Inara and wandering around cursing in Chinese and pretending I'm on Serenity. So can anyone attest to the quality of the comics? Does it feel like the 'verse?

It's all three comics in one volume, trade paperback (i.e. oversized paperback) entitled 'Serenity - Those Left Behind'. I picked it up yesterday and DAYUM, the artwork is fine! It's a little thin, but it fills in some of the gaps between the last episode of the series and the BDM.

I've heard both good and bad reviews about the comics. For me, they were the first comics I'd purchased in over 15 years, and I liked them.

One of the negative reviews I read stated that they weren't long enough - all three together felt like about 10 minutes of a tv episode. I have to agree, but it's a different format than tv.

As far as the storyline feeling like it belongs in the 'verse, I'd say it's similar, but again the story is being told in a different format. And even if you're not bowled over by the comics, they are by Joss, and so are absolutely canon. They are part of the Firefly storyline, and as such you need to own and read them. That's what I think, anyway.

Same for me, and I agree with everything else DarkJester said. I read them very carefully before slipping them back into their plastic bags. Yes, I had to own them but, no, I didn't really get that lovin' feeling of watching Firefly again. If you haven't aleady, read the unfilmed Firefly script at http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=45
You can hear the actors saying their lines and when I finished reading I really did feel as though I'd *seen* another episode.

They may be 'canon', but they aren't pure Joss. He
had a co-writer, who in my estimation did the bulk
of the actual writing. Sadly, IMO the comics just
flat out sucked.
They did not feel like the 'verse at all to me.
Our BDHs did things WAY out of charachter - things
that would never have occured in the series.

I'd compile a list of the 'errata', but I don't want
to even go back and read them. In my little mind,
the comic stories didn't even happen. There's FanFic
out there that's better.
HTH =[
EDIT: if you need more Firefly, and haven't seen
this:

Then see it!

I don't entirely agree with that...

The comics, I felt they were far too short, yes. But that's the main reason they didn't feel as much like a part of the 'verse; didn't seem as if our heroes got the chance to shine like they normally do.

The unfilmed episode, on the other hand, had plenty of things that I thought were very uncharacteristic for certain people. For instance...

Select to view spoiler:

I could never see Simon violate the Hippocratic oath. Ever. He was completely calm with Jayne, and only went so far as to teach him a lesson--though, half that lesson was "you have nothing to fear from me".

Also, I could never, ever see Kaylee saying that she sympathized with wanting someone dead. She freezes up when she's holding a gun, even if other folks are shooting at her.

There are other things here and there. Most of them I mentioned before in the Firefly Episodes thread about the unfilmed episode. In all, I agree with what Joss said way back: the episode needs a lot of polish. It's unrefined, and a little refinement and better characterization could've gone a long way.

Nonetheless, between that script and the comic, I preferred that script. Though the comic's still very dear to me. KF

I think the comics are good for a little bit of a Firefly fix (I know just how you feel! Everyone here does)--as was the unfilmed episode. Yeah, they're not as good as an actual episode, but we'll take what we can get. What I liked best about the comics was getting a little bit of info on certain happenings between the series and the movie. I had a hunch about something in the movie that I found confirmed in the comics. So I thought they were worth it--plus some of the covers are cool, and they're cheap.
