I'd imagine someone has come up with this theory before, but I can't help noticing a striking resemblance between the crew of Serenity and the crew of the Betty in Alien Resurrection. I know that Joss Whedon was the principal scriptwriter for Alien 4, and has said publicly that the finished film had changed drastically from his original concept (which is why it is crap). So, how likely is it that in the original script for Alien 4 the crews were even more similar?

Some common factors are:

Both ships engage in smuggling and other underhand activities, for money

Both crews have a 'hard' character - Jayne and Johner (played by the excellent Ron Perlman)

Both crews have a senior black female character, engaged in a romantic relationship with another crew member

Both crews have a young female with some sort of secret (River is a psychic, Call is an android)

I'm sure there are several I've missed. Opinions?

I think this was addressed in the collection of threads for other scifi series. I know I didn't figure it out, but once the connection was pointed out I thought it was really intriguing.

America loves a winner!

The obvious one, both have young female mechanics too.

Yeah, been discussed, but neat to show folks who've not put 2 + 2 together before.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

I figured the connection too the first time I saw it. You're right, everything about it is similar....like when the Firefly crew was playing basketball. That scene and the set seemed to be straight out of Aliens 4, I was expecting an Alien to bust through at any moment.

LOL, never thought of this before; but you're probably right. Lines like:

"Hmm, must be a chick thing."

I can just hear Jayne say that. :)

Not to mention Johner, who mistrusts Cal, and would give her up in a heart-beat.

"Mei-mei, everything I have is right here." -- Simon Tam.

I've never made that connection either. On the other hand, that might have a lot to do with the fact that I've seen Alien Resurrection only once, and have tried VERY hard to repress the memory ever since.

It's a shame, really. Outside interference neutered the film, and I bet that it really hurt Joss, both personally and professionally. Having something so bashed on your resume just can't feel good, whether it was your fault or not.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!
