WYATTSMOM

I posted back in December about middle names for River for my second child. Well, I had the 20 week scan the other day and the baby is very much a boy. So, now I am at a loss for good names. I have been looking through conventional books and on naming sites, but nothing really jumps out at me. So, does anyone have any good ideas for Firefly or Serenity names for a boy? Our last name is Sherwood. Our first son's name is Wyatt James, picked after watching Tombstone. Any advice is much appreciated!

:) Charissa

I'm with the aforementioned Malcolm. Can be a very adult name when he grows up. Plus, yeah, cool inspiration. Also, there's not too much that can be picked on with Malcolm. (my name being Paige, I am well aware of the child's obessision with name picking lol) Course there is always Simon...

Well, assuming you're thinking of a name with Firefly/Serenity resonance, there are some pretty good possibilities. How about:

- Joss. It's a Chinese word for 'luck', I believe, and it's a bit different from the overpopular 'Josh'. Unfortunately, however, it doesn't blend well with 'Sherwood'.

- Adam. Here we're borrowing from an actor's name rather than a character, but 'Adam Sherwood' has a nice ring. It's also a very traditional name and doesn't allow for much tease factor. 'Alan' or 'Allan" are also good, but wasn't there a comedian or somebody named Alan Sherwood?

- From the character side, Malcolm and Simon are both good and work with Sherwood. But I don't think Jayne, Hoban, or Darrial would quite cut it.

- And one from left field: Theo (or Theodore). Good solid name that flows well with Sherwood in both long and short forms. 'Theodore Sherwood' has a rather haikuish feel to it.

How does this relate to Firefly, you ask? Well, over on the serenitymovie.org/browncoats board, somebody started a thread about what The Operative's real name might have been. One poster suggested Theo P. Erative, so now people over there are starting to refer to the guy as Theo. Slick, eh?

Probably better than Eijofor, too.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

I'm partial to Malcolm obviously. If I had a son on the way, that is what his name would be.

But Nathan and Adam are good.

I wonder what Mal's middle name is? Anyone know?

Hey, by the way, congrats, and stay well and happy!

I've always been fond of using place names for people in my writings and in real life so my suggestions to you ma'am, are Arkham, and Dublin. Also, Atrus has a good sound to it without being common.

If you want to get slightly referential though I'd suggest Roland or Blaine. Because I'm a Dark Tower nerd on my days off.

ARCADIA

Well... since River is a name derived from a word, it is not gendered. Though Joss gave it to a female character in Firefly/Serenity, there are many examples of River as a male name (actor River Phoeniz, Weezer singer Rivers Cuomo, being two). So, if you really like River, go for it (just not with the mn Jayne).

I am fond of Simon, personally. Malcolm/Mal is nice as well. Also, if you still wanted to use a River related name, Tam is a Scottish nickname for Thomas, so could could always name him Thomas nn Tam. Perhaps Thomas Malcolm, or even Thomas Reynold. I think Wyatt and Tam sound nifty as brothers.

Here are a few other Firefly/Serenity names that I can think of, with my mind, mwhaha....
Monty, perhaps as a nn for Montgomery (Monty Reynolds)
Tracey (from "The Message")
Atherton (not the most likeable character, but I thought that his name was pretty damn cool)

A few names that mean brown (like browncoat):
Donovan (Wyatt and Donovan sound like they could be sibs)
Duncan (ditto)
Bruno
Eachann (sorry, don't know any Americanized spellings)

You could also use locations they visit in Firefly/Serenity. Obviously, I wouldn't recomend Miranda, but if you are adventerous you could consider...
Canton
Boros
Ezra
Haven
Higgins
Kerry
Londinum
Osiris
Melbourne (New Melbounre)
Dunsmire (New Dunsmire)
Kasmir (New Kasmir)
Paquin
Shadow (this is kinda bold, but word names are the next big thing)
Alben (St. Albens -- with the nn Ben, perhaps)

Sorry if the response seems long. I frequent the message boards at behindthename.com (my name is Arcadia there, too) so I'm used to this kind of thing. If you haven't been there yet, I recomend checking it out. Since it is an entomology site, not just a baby names cite, if hosts one of the largest, most organized names databased (you can sort by meaning, sex, ethnicity, and more) and it has the most accurate name meanings you will find anywhere. Congrats and goodluck!

I personally love Arcadia's "Shadow" idea. Only - I'm not sure that Shadow Sherwood would flow well.

Malcolm would be perfect - I think.

19 conversions and counting!!!

I just *have* to say it... not what you want, but: Robin Oliver.

He could then be "Robin O' Sherwood" (forest).
