Hey all,

There will be a showing of Serenity in either mid February or early March at Igor's Buddha Belly in New Orleans. This is an event that will pull from the three universities in the area (Tulane, Loyola and UNO), as well as the general public. Hopefully, there will be an element of sponsership as well for this huge event from local businesses. As well as showing the movie, a specific night will be designated as Firefly night. This would hopefully provide some organization to the Brown Coats in New Orleans as well. Pretty cool eh? This is one of the best ways that the word could prematurely get around. Any of yall have any suggestions or ideas? Any input would be fantastic.

Will

First off, I live in Baton Rouge and attend LSU. It's great to see a fellow browncoat from Louisiana. I would suggest printing some fliers and posting them around, especially on campus due to high traffic flows of people who would probably like Firefly/Serenity. As a matter of fact I had planned on doing that at LSU as a general promotion, but now I can put a specific event on the fliers. As soon as you get a date and time please post it.

That's awesome man. The response has been great but I think we can more. I would love having LSU get in on this. Real community during a time where Louisiana needs to come together...browncoats included. Spread it man...you know there's a signal and well...you can't stop it. Any others around here?

Fellow River Rat here! I don't live there anymore, but was born there on the river (Oschner). We used to have a shotgun on Magazine Street, right across from Audubon Zoo. I used to listen to the lions roar at night when I went to bed.

I miss old New Orleans. I wish I was still there, despite what Katrina did.

I miss the coffee and beneighs[spelling?].

Horrible spelling, great food! It's spelled beignet. I haven't been down in a while, I think I may have to go for the Serenity showing and make a few days of it.

Flyer's complete, date is almost set. Just gotta jump through some logisical hurdles but it looks as if early March is the time. Working on possible sponsership and of course the charity would be "Equality Now." Any other ideas? Come on guys, I like seeing when someone posted. It makes me a little shiney...

I'm not a New Orleanian, but my best friend is, and she's a fan. I'll let her know about it, although she's kind of busy trying to keep Tulane running. But at least she'll cheer you on!

Um, charity-wise, have you considered donating your proceeds to some aspect of hurricane relief? Not that Equality Now ain't great, but New Orleans and the surrounding area have been through a devastating disaster with some pretty horrific consequences for many of the area's residents. (I've been to the area twice since the hurricane to do rescue work, so I'm not just talking out my theoretical ass.) Many remain displaced and unemployed, because the city's businesses can't even begin to return to normal levels, and there isn't sufficient housing stock. If you are at LSU or Tulane, you are feeling it less, but people who lived in the 9th ward, or students at UNO and some of the other area schools are hurtin'. Might be nice to direct the aid their way.

Just an idea.

Sounds like you have most of the bases covered. If you could email me a copy of the flyer I will be sure to put some up around campus. I've been thinking of getting a table in Free Speech Alley(LSU campus) and giving away freebies to try to raise viewership of the March 10 Firefly marathon. Happily this is at the same time so I can advertise for both if I go through with it. The only problem is that, as a poor college student, I would have to ask for donations of merchandise from fans. I'm not sure if I'm willing to ask people to trust me like that, so I'll have to think about it some more. But the flyers are a definite, so at least we may get some people to watch/attend. Ah, I just had an idea. You may want to email the local papers/news sources(I only know of the Times-Picayune) to see if they would cover it as a human interest story or a coming together of NO people, you get the idea.

I didn't even think of Hurricane Relief! That's a great idea. I guess being a Native, I guess I didn't think about it. Perhaps its the fact that it's everywhere in the city? It just takes a place in the back of your mind after awhile. But yes, this could bring the community together which would be awesome.

Well...of ocurse I knew the Sci-Fi marathon was on the 10th. No, no I didn't. Pretty good call eh though?

Today is the day I go out and speak with some businesses. See if we can't get some sponsership going. Ya'll wish me luck alright?

Whoo-hoo!

So are you a member of http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/ yahoo group that serves as

"Clearinghouse for discussion of holding benefit screenings of Joss Whedon's "Serenity" (or, for that matter, episodes of "Firefly") beginning in 2006.

Both individual stand-alone benefits for various charities and a proposal for multiple same-day benefits across the country for Equality Now will be discussed.

Wherever you're located, if you're interested in trying to do a benefit screening sometime next year, please join the discussion here.

"Benefit" should be taken two ways: These screenings literally will benefit charity, but in addition we will benefit from getting to see the movie on the big screen again"

If not, maybe you should. I'm sure they would like to hear about your success.

We're really hoping to get a lot of people to show up at the Serenity screening in (most likely) early March, because then we'll be able to show an episode each week after. I heard something about drink specials, by the way. So far there's been a big response, so if we're lucky this could be something big.

New Orleans needs community right now. It's still pretty surreal, and is the biggest "frontier town" in the country in my opinion. We're having some pretty intense interactions with the "Alliance," trying to get our city back up and running. Hopefully we can get donations for Katrina relief and maybe some media coverage.

Can't stop the signal.

Igor's Buddha Belly Bar and Grill is a...well..a bar and grill. Located at 4437 Magazine Street in NOLA. All proceeds will be going to Equality Now and the New Orleans Hurricane Relief Fund.

There has been a HUGE response from the local community as well as the public. Even the internet community has helped us! The exact date is a little shaky as of right now. The date is the ONLY shaky thing at this point, and this is only because of the advertising venues that have been made availible to us through the community service this project to playing with.

Everyone will be kept informed on the happenings of this event (and the events to follow).

I can only think of one more bit of advice. Try to have it before March 10th so you can tell everyone that liked it to watch Firefly on
Sci-Fi. I think that if we can get some really good ratings for the marathon, it would take great strides towards getting our show back on the air. Aside from that, you're doing great, keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for your support. You can help by telling your friends. The more enthusiastic people who show up, the better the future of this will be. My hope is that it turns into an enthusiastic community of N.O. Browncoats, with a weekly screening.

Anyone who would like to help distribute flyers or help in any way would be bestowed medals and honored in an official manner. We would get very choked up. Honestly, there could be tears.

It is indeed happening! This Sunday, March 5th at Igor's Buddha Belly at 4437 Magazine Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. There will be a raffle, petitions to sign, film to watch, discussions to be had, elbows to be rubbed, mudder's milk to be drunken, talk of a weekly showing of the episodes in the order that FOX had it in (Just kidding), organizings and the like. Donations will go towards New Orleans Hurricane Relief as well as Equality Now. Come see how many browncaots are actually in New Orleans!

At Igor's Buddha Belly, tonight, at 7pm. Free to the public, donations for Serenity Valley...er, Katrina relief. Misbehavement shall be had.
