Likes to mess with stuffs.

I was surfing around looking for Firefly info and came across the following quote in one of the newsgroups. Apparently, it was from Whedon's Saturn Award acceptance speech. I haven't been able to find the entire speech (if you find it, post it), but what appears below just proves why he is so good at what he does.

Quote:

"...this award comes from a different group of people. It comes from a bunch of nerds...and when I say that, I mean smart people. I mean people who understand what SF and Fantasy mean. Whenever I go to another awards show, it's always in *spite* of what I do. They're always talking about 'transcending' the genre. I don't believe in transcending the genre, I believe in the GENRE. I honestly do think there is no better place to talk about anything, myth, human interaction, social interaction, history, any of that, all of that, and all at once, than in Fantasy or Science Fiction."

That quote pretty thoroughly covers why I enjoy Joss Whedon's writing. On the one hand, he's very serious about what he does, and doesn't like to produce work he can't be proud of. On the other hand, he is quite devoid of cultural pretensions -- he does video comic books, and makes no apologies for it. The ironic thing (I have to find an ironic thing, I haven't found one today) is that he actually manages to achieve a kind of serious literary and artistic expression -- he's just not self conscious about it.

I like Whedon & Straczynski (Babylon 5) for the same reason--they respect the genres they work in.

I would like to add my two cents just because I think so much of Joss Whedon, and all his work, not to!

Sometimes I really can't believe he is so good at what he does, which lets face it is so much! He has brought humor and wit into Buffy and Angel without loosing the important story qualities of the show. And I have to assume he will again for Firefly.

If it wasn't for the fact that Joss Whedon is so likable you might just hold it against him, but its not even like you can do that!

All I can say is Horray for Joss! Three cheers!

Actually I like the fact that both make the assumption the audience cares, remembers and has intelligence. They write as well as the British TV writers used to, before American Style devastated the industry.

Whenever I enter a post or chat where the general topic is "His Most Holyness Josh Whedon is the Greatest Human Being Ever--Scratch That, A God," I always wonder is Whedon ever wanders into these posts. If so, what does he think of them.

*** NOTE TO JOSS, IF YOU'RE READING THIS***

You are so cool!

Bored now.

Well I think that there's as much good and bad writing in British TV as there ever was. I'm not sure there was ever a 'golden age' in that sense.

One thing American writers do really well that we don't seem to be able to manage is a really entertaining funny mainstream sitcom. The only British sitcoms I can stand to watch are the really offbeat, cult ones - Spaced, Black Books. Whereas the US ones I like - Friends, Frasier - are pretty mainstream.

That's also what I appreciate about Buffy and Angel over other 'genre' shows - they have a great sense of humour.

I think you might be on to something there.
