According to posts I've been reading at IMdB, George Lucas ripped on Serenity and Firefly and Whedon calling them bargain bin trash. The posters provide no link but said it was in an interview featured on www.supershadow.com.

Does anyone know if this is true? Has anyone actually seen this article or interview?

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Dear Mr. Lucas, I love all your movies. I was wondering if you have ever seen the movie Serenity written and directed by Joss Whedon? Many critics compare it to the Star Wars Prequels and how much better it is. "It is the best sci-fi movie I've seen since The Empire Strikes Back." I was wondering how you felt about the movie, did you like it?

George Lucas: The best way to judge how could science fiction films are is to examine their box-office earnings. Serenity took in a weak $ 25 million dollars in North America. Revenge of the Sith crushed this figure with earnings toppling over $ 380 million dollars. Hence, Star Wars is fifteen times more popular that the hack work produced by Whedon.

All of Whedon’s TV shows can be found in the bargain basement bin for DVD’s. Buffy - The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Angel can be bought for $ 10 bucks for the entire season run. Anti-popular is the way I describe it. All and all, Serenity is just another piece of crap in the wall. That will surely drive you insane.

umm... asshole.

Thanks.

Wow, that is pretty harsh especially coming from the man who wrote Episodes 1 through 3.

Is this interview actually credible? It looks made up to me. Like someone was writing it from pure fiction rather than an actual interview. I don't want to brand someone with something they didn't even said.

But if Lucas did say this well then...We'll have to do something about that.

Honestly, I USED to enjoy the first three SW. But I've really had a distaste for it since all of the marketing hype and whatnot. It's become a huge name that's slapped around (Burger King) to make millions.

After reading that, I knew I already hated Lucas, but now I hate him even more. Lucas wouldn't know good writing, character development and intelligent dialog if it slapped him in the face.

George Lucas

I will no longer be purchasing anything with your name attached to it--you're dead to me, please burn in hell, now and forever more.

Find my words harsh? What can I say? I'm a prick, espessially when someone insults something I hold dear and they compair it to the drivel that they enjoy.

If that is true are we supposed to look on that as a good thing or a bad thing?

Serenity was hailed as what the Star Wars trilogy was and Episodes I-III weren't. (Obviously this is on a level deeper than such superficial things as aliens.) And along those lines the original Trilogy, when compared to modern day movies, is bargain bin trash.

What destroyed the prequels, in my opinion, was that they tried so hard to be flashy, they lost everything, when they went for impressive effects over characters. But the characters were all that ever mattered, when you grabbed a cast of unknowns and gave them a good story it was greatness, but that was a long time ago, Lucas lost touch with that.

Give me the bargain bin trash I say, at least it's real, it doesn't have enough of a budget not to be.

If Lucas didn't really say it ignore this.

I think this particular part of the interview absolutely HAS to be a hack or crack job. In other words, it looks to me as though that particular answer may have been hacked by someone. It just doesn't match the tone of all the other answers he gave.

Especially the typos ( " . . . The best way to judge how COULD science fiction films are . . . " )?

I really don't see how there's any way that Lucas actually said these words.

Actually, on second thought, I think the ENTIRE interview is fake. I think it's someone's attempt at uber-sarcasm as a form of humor.

I'll take Serenity any day over Star Wars and I can't stand those three prequels, but to be fair -- there's no way that's Lucas speaking.

Hey Guys Im new to the site... Glad to be a part of the browncoat cause, but before we all go starting Lucas vs whedon War you all should know that Supershadow.com one giant joke. There are a couple Petitions out there trying to dismantle the site. The site is one big lie, so the odds that the "douche bag" of a webmaster actually getting an interview with lucas is slim to none. As a matter of fact their is even a site trying to expose the webmaster lol http://www.angelfire.com/crazy3/realsupershadow/

The site linked to in this thread is obviously made up but it is entirely possible that the parody is based (loosely) on something he really said.

I say give him the benefit of the doubt, we have enough reason to dislike him without adding something that isn't necessarily true.

I did a general search on supershadows (where the supposed George Lucas interview comes from) and found that it is accused of being a fraud. There's a website: boards.theforce.net/message where I guess star wars fans were trying to petition to stop this guy.

Yeah, as a refugee SW fan, let me say that Supershadow is a total fraud. He claims to be Lucas's best friend and that he spends his days at Skywalker Ranch editing the films. He's a total crackpot. Every few weeks the message boards would get some poor uninformed newbie who didn't know any better spouting some trash about "Kane Skywalker" or some such and someone would explain (usually not very politely, another reason why the 'verse is so much better than the Galaxy Far, Far Away) that Supershadow's dubious credibility to him.

Honestly, anything you find on that site is complete and utter bilge.

It's ludicrous, and frankly somewhat disturbing, that around half the posters in this topic seem to be at least considering the possibility that this is for real. Do you think so little of George Lucas?? No matter what you may think of him personally, no one in his position would be stupid enough to badmouth another sci-fi movie like that.

Also, as several people have pointed out, the entire website is clearly a joke.

Three minutes of reading various questions and answers left no doubt in mind that the interview is a fake piece of go-se.

"The best thing about Star Wars is that it doesn’t look like regular science fiction. The uniforms worn by Kirk and Picard in Star Trek look horrendous. The futuristic look you talk about is not the way to go. I want Star Wars to always remain timeless and classic. The designs have to be organic and not machine like. I think you don‘t understand what Star Wars is all about. I think we should leave this all up to SuperShadow. He has his finger on the pulse of Star Wars and he always makes the right decisions."

The ridiculousness of the whole thing is hi-larious.

I have been a big fan of Star Wars since I was a child but, Lucas' coments strike me as petty jealousy. When you look at why the early movies are better than the later ones and why we love Joss' work, it is the characters and dialogue.

Lucas has created (sometimes borrowed) a great world to tell his giant saga. Firefly is all about the characters and dialogue, something Lucas seems to have steadily forgotten how to do well as his career has gone on.

If it were just this, I'd be inclined to agree. But, it seems as if he's been up to deceivin' Star Wars fans for years, claimin' all kinds of things that, if believed by someone, would end up disappointing that person when those things were proven untrue.

George Lucas, I have a question for you: In Attack of the Clones, on Kamino, when Obi-Wan, Lama-Su, and Taun-We are walking in that corridor, we see what looks like the bottom of the Star Trek Enterprise, is that where it came from?

George Lucas: No, the Enterprise of Star Trek did not originate on Kamino. The events of Attack of the Clones occurred approximately 170,000 years prior to the first, original Star Trek TV series. What happened is that I got permission from Paramount Pictures (the film studio that owns all rights to Star Trek) to let me use this design. I love ripping off the ideas of others so I can spend less time thinking about Star Wars. It saves me much time to borrow ideas so I can spend more time with my super model girlfriends. If you remember, we also had one of the 2001: A Space Odyssey pods in Watto’s junk yard in The Phantom Menace.

First of all, I'd like to say this; I have read some of the comments and a few of them you basically call the person an idiot. Wouldn't it be smarter and time saving to just read the ones that are worth reading instead of ones that make you pity the idiot that has a small brain. And now to my actual question. Did you actually take the time to think about the way a light saber would work? A few of us spent half a year pondering this and taking different pieces of the light saber and such at a time and trying to put some logic into it, we got a few theories if you would like to read one, like to read on enough to actually take the time out of your busy day, then my email is ****@hotmail.com.

George Lucas: I have to respond to some of the hardcore losers who write in to me so that they know exactly how I feel about them. Some of these people are deluded enough to think their opinion actually matters. They post on message boards that are read by two or three people. This makes them think they are talking to the entire fan base, which is totally ridiculous. SuperShadow.com is the only place on the Net where you can make contact with hundreds of thousands of true fans. I bash these mentally challenged people to show them who’s boss. Their opinions will never matter just as their lives have no purpose. It makes me laugh really hard that somebody wastes so much time spouting off hatred about Star Wars.

You need to remember that I had about three years to come up with the light-saber idea while writing Star Wars from 1973 to 1975. I basically thought they were like regular swords except instead of having metal blades the blades would be of some kind of energy. I can’t tell you exactly how the light saber works because I’m not an engineer or physicist. I’m sure there are extraterrestrials that have working light sabers. There may be real light-saber battles happening all over the Universe.

Come on people, you actually bought into this guy?

This George Lucas "interview" is so very, very fake... for so many reasons.

If it has prompted any extended arguments on IMdB, or admonishments against George Lucas, then I find this troubling... troubling because it means people can be duped so easily. Apparently, critical thinking is in short supply these days.

The Star Wars fanboy who wrote the "interview" probably wants to get George Lucas' attention, even if it means doing it in a negative way.

I don't know if anyone will remember this but on one of the DVD commentaries for Buffy, (I believe it's on the 6th season episode "Bargaining"...a comment by Marti Noxon) they actually talk about George Lucas coming to the set with his daughter because she was such a big fan. He even asked some of the cast to come to Australia and visit him on set.

That doesn't sound like somebody who would then turn around and rip on everything that Joss has created. In other words, I believe the interview is a fake.

GLOBLABSURDITY

This is obviously drivel. It seems to me that in the land of Hollywood--most everyone seems to go out of their way to sucker up or put on a kinda show for everyone else. Meaning that if a particular director doesn't like something another puts out--I doubt you'd hear anything from first said director about it. If they like what the other has created--they'll go on and on about it. The consensus being that you never really know who may be on top of the game next--so don't cut your throat or burn your bridge. 'Everybody play nice'. Of course there are exeptions to this rule--those who seem to rattle the fences a bit--like our Joss. However, even Joss doesn't seem to strike out with too much venom--with him it's more implied and wrapped up in humor. I've seen interviews with Lucas as well--and he is much more professional in approach than the 'bozo' on this site.

I agree, we know it is a fake. In regards to people being down on 1,2,3 it is becuase it lacked the chemistry between the characters that 4,5 and had, which is actually one of the things I love so much about Firefly/Serenity.

I completely agree, this interview is bull crap.

Oh, and episodes 1,2, and three 3 were just not as good as 4,5,and 6. The latter had the most interesting characters and a wonderful story to boot. 1,2,and 3 were just oversaturated with special effects and such that just took away from the story and characters.

That's why I believe Serenity is such a better movie than the recent Star Wars films. Because it was made on a lower budget, the special effects weren't used as much, which didn't detract from the characters or the story line. It's kind of ironic actually. A super special effects driven movie who's story is not so great does exceptionally well at the box office. On the other hand, the movie that is done well and has a more compelling story and group of characters does not do as well as the other movie.

Sometimes, I wish people would open their eyes and take a look at what their watching. Not everything is how it appears.

Wash: Yes, Jayne, she's a witch. She's had congress with the Beast.
Jayne: She's in Congress?
Wash: How did your brain even learn human speech? I'm just so curious!
