Stop me if you've already heard/read/discussed this.

Suppose the 10th of 1% (or whatever it was) of the Miranda population that turned Reaver after receiving the Pax was the most intelligent segment of the population.

This could explain why they are able to keep their ships flying for 11 years despite the fact that they are a) completely insane, b) completely unorganized as far as we can see it and c) cut off from resupply for obvious reasons.

This could also explain why the Alliance looked to the cream of the new generation, such as our River, for recruits for its Pax testing program, the hope that they could find a few who could be given the Pax, have their natural aggressive tendencies turned up a thousand percent BUT somehow remain controllable, thus making them effective human weapons.

Perhaps all the young recruits it has tried have failed but River, and it is her psychic abilities combined with her intelligence that have protected her mind thus far. She has not escaped unscathed, obviously, but she's no Reaver.

OK, you can start shooting down my theory now. Whaddya think? Be honest.

Actually, kinda seems to make sense. They have to have some kind of smarts to keep those ships in the air, like you said. Probably a little more dramatic, too, if it was the best and brightest of the planet that ended up going so sour.

Do have one hole to shoot through, though. Wasn't technically the Pax that they were testing on River. I'm sure some of the techniques they were trying had some beginnings with it. See 'Ariel' for a couple clues as to their experiments, if you haven't yet. Like I said, I'm sure some of the experiments on River came about partly because of the Pax project, but I always had the feeling they were going for something bigger with her.

Also, might wanna add a little spoiler disclaimer in your post, for those who may not have seen the movie yet.

Good thought on the spoiler warning - I added one to the title. I hope I'm not too late and haven't ruined it for anyone - eek!

She did get at least one dose of the Pax. That comes from the River Tam Sessions.

I don't wanna be mean, but go back and look at everything everyone else has said before about reavers and why they fly ships and all that. It has been discussed 100 times already. And by the way.. where do you get the idea they used PAX on River? I have the understanding that the Alliance just likes to experiment on people not that they are the same experiment.

Yep still don't see what you’re talking about. River talks about the PAX and then she talks about another subject that they killed by cutting into his brain to deep. I seriously doubt on any level that PAX administered to her or any of the other subjects.

ASARIAN

The G-32 Paxilon Hydroclorate (the "PAX") was added to the air processors at Miranda. It was supposed to calm the population, weed out aggression. You know, "making better worlds" and all. And I'm willing to bet vital parts of my anatomy that it was never used on River.
