It's just about a copy of Rambo's knife from First Blood.

United Cutlery sells a decent one here.

Bit on the pricy side tho, you could prolly find similar blades a bit cheaper if you shopped around, but UC is quality stuff.

My husband has something to say:

Hello folks. My name is James. This is the first time I've said anything on this forum, but I do believe that I might be able to help concerning the question of Jayne's knives.

Frost cutlery, Joy knives and United cutlery all have some neat looking fantasy knives. They even make some bowie style knives. As a selling point they are cheap. But that is also one of their problems. One thing that I noticed is that the few knives that I saw in the hands of the bad guys have all been from one of these three companies.

The knives in Janye's arsenal however are a totally different story. All of the ones that I've gotten a good look at are one sort of bowie or another. For example the knife that Jayne used to "scare" the alliance mole in the first episode is what is referred to as a coffin handle bowie because the handle is shaped like a coffin. His particular example appears to have a stainless steel blade from between nine to ten inches long and with file work on the spine. This knife is definitely a custom job. From what I've seen all of Jayne's knives are bowies and all are custom made. My personal favorite is the knife that he used in "Jayne's Town". It is a beautiful example of a file knife. The man who made it used a large file to make the blade out of and left the file pattern in the side of the blade. This knife is not stainless but I find it more visually appealing. It has a beautiful stag handle that only a custom knife will have. There are some companies out there that make decent bowies but you will not find any for less than a hundred dollars if the knife is a large one like the one you were asking about. Sorry, but you get what you pay for. If you go to a custom knife maker expect to pay much more, but expect to get a truly exceptional piece of work. Good luck with your search. I suggest that you look at some of the knife magazines out there for ideas of what is out there and who is making it.

He's really into knives, even makes one, every now and again.

James can talk all day about knives, the only problem being that he gets truly zealous. I had to let him reply once I mentioned there was a knife question on the forum -- he'd been bugging me about it since last night. I think he watched all the episodes while I was at work, today, making sure he had his facts straight about Jayne's cutlery.

If only he'd be so interested in something more ... lucrative.

To get an idea about some pricing and quality of custom knives, here's the website my neighbor sells through:

OK, forgive the shameless plug; he's a nice guy and I saw a chance. Plus he just made a knife for my dad.

i thought they looked like united cutlery or buck knives. seriously, if you aren't concerned about whether or not it *looks* like jayne's knife, but actually want something as hardcore as jayne, you've gotta check out Swamp Rat knives. Busse makes the best, but Rats are more affordable. Those things have a cult following and i have many, many of them in my safe at home and around the house. my favorite is the Swamp Rat folder that i use as an occasional boot knife.
they're website is a little silly, but i swear to you, i've seen amazing things done with and to those knives. i live with a knife fanatic, (and have become one by proxy), and he swears by Busse and Swamp Rat.
and they're big and scary looking.

as for jayne... *sigh* so fing hot.

The knife he had is a bowie style knife. Who made it, I don't know but bowie knifes are a very common hunting knife and you can find them in most stores that sell gear of that nature such as Wal-Mart or Dicks.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Is anyone else getting a bit hot and bothered about this discussion?!!!

Jayne and his knives and guns and muscles and gun metal blue eyes..... *sigh*

You know what they say about men and their knives or guns...........

And all those confrontations about who's got the biggest!!!

Need I say more??!!

Boys and their toys.............

One of my favorite scenes is Jayne licking his blade before going to work on it with the whetstone. I've been known to do just that before sharpening one out of my collection (though I refrain from hawking a loogie on the whetstone), and I just...love that.

Heh.

Yeah, I'm a girl with a knife collection that I occasionally lick. Problem!? *narrows eyes*

Oh, and definitely thanks for the information on Jayne's knives! Very complete and useful info, and it saved me a lot of trouble looking it up myself. It's always good to bump into a fellow enthusiast -- read: obsessive fanatic -- even by proxy. Woot!

You guys...

All so sweet, yet now and again something dowright unsettlin' emerges in the guns, knives and some time ago a girlie* holding forth knowledgably on the subject of punching.

Anyway, all this cutlery talk reminded me of DoA

http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=45

I'd love to have seen the bit with Jayne winning something. I won't spoiler it, but it was very Jayne. Things not going right / utter frustration / problem solved.

What...you mean like punching with your two first knuckles so you don't break the small bones in your hand? Or punching from the shoulder to get the power of your whole body behind it instead of just swinging wildly and ineffectually?

*innocent grin*

Yes, I know very well how to throw a punch, and no matter my heartless nature, I am a girl. Never "girlie", but a girl.

No man parts, here. Heheh.

I'm not hot and bothered by Jayne, lol.

I went with the following for my costume http://us.st11.yimg.com/store1.yimg.com/I/legendaryarms_1880_2688719

The pic is at an angle so the blade looks bigger than it really is (yall are so bad ) The only real difference I see from the show is the number of pins in the handle (his has 4). The sheath was completely different though and my friend who does leatherwork is making it now. Will post pics when I get it.

The handle scales differ and you get no choice, and mine of course ended up being brown, I am gonna have to paint them.
