Stupid topic I know, but I just want to see if there are other people experiencing the same things that I see going on around me.

You ever met someone who didnt like the race that they were born? I know 2 people myself, and they make me real nervous because it seems like they really don't belong anywhere.

It's not that big a deal. As the great HL Mencken once said, every intelligent man is embarrassed by his own country at some time or another, no matter where he is born. The same thing occurs occassionally to the failings of your own people.

Now don't get me wrong, there is a strange and very modern kind of disease for a certain people that don't like themselves- that's a very outlandish kind of extended self hatred involved with a certain kind of politics, almost like a photo negative of racism. That can't be helped because it's an existential problem on the part of the holder. It's just self-hatred turned outward like a safety-valve.

It's just best to leave them alone. If you have to talk about them, it's best to be be harsh and uncompromising, though: make them know in no uncertain terms you think the idea is disgusting. Tell them you're proud of it (even if you're not part of that people) and not to extend those thoughts to you.

Whatever you do, however, do NOT get drawn into an argument about what's good or bad about any particular people. Politics being what it is, any thought about any race can be a minefield, no matter how honest. Just ignore specifics.

As for not wanting to belong, that's not the problem. You can not belong or want to and still enjoy your own people. It's important you not mistake belonging and self-hatred. Remember, it's a free country. They're allowed freedom to be idiots, and you're allowed to sneer at it.

Well, it's sad more than scary. I can't help but feel a bit sorry for someone who's so upset with him or herself like that. Worse yet, the same folks are usually quite harsh and narrow-minded regarding other people of the same race.

I can't say arguing with them'd do any good, since it's usually more of a self-confidence issue. KF

Lord, I'm walking your way. Let me in, for my feet are sore, my clothes are ragged.
Look in my eyes, Lord, and my sins will play out on them as on a screen. Read them all.
Forgive what you can and send me on my path. I will walk on until you bid me rest.

Why's this a scary topic? I freely admit to being a racist myself. But only because I'm a misogynist, too. And a misanthrope.

Wow, you're braver than I am. I'm usually the bravest person around when it comes to bucking convention and the silly mores of our times, but even I keep silent about some things in some places. Best not to say certain things when censorious Americans are about. My kudos to you, brave man! I wouldn't be surprised if they kick you off, though. Even claiming irony isn't defense enough anymore.
In fact, I'm kinda surprised you haven't already been censored or banned. Hope they don't, though. Fellow Misanthropes are fun.

"While we have an open policy concerning messages, please be civil when responding to others."

That's what it says right above the form to post a new message or response. I'm more than happy to take advantage of their offer, and the way I see things, I've done more to earn my rights to free speech than most people anyways.

People are too uptight about this stuff, and if they're going to let my ignorant little comments and jokes about it ruin their day, then that's their problem, not mine. Constitution gives rights to people to do anything that does not put someone else’s life, liberty or property in immediate physical danger. Any laws beyond this are superfluous.

FREELANCEPILOT

I flip flop sometimes.
I am half Korean, half Spanish.
I really don't fit in with either the Spanish (although most in texas are mexican and not spanish.) or the Korean (or even general asian) set.
There are times when I wish I were white because I would avoid some hardships I've had to face, but most of the time I love my dual heritage.
My korean side gives me such wonderful food, and it molded how i meet older people, how i defer respect, and some of my moral principles of familial honor and the like.
My spanish side gave me my religion (catholic) and my romantic side, and some honor as well (my great-grandfather was a Count in spain, Now it is my grandfather, my father is the Vizconde, and I am a Baron. No, that doesn't mean anything in the US. No, i am not rich.)
People sometimes get annoyed as i seem to switch ethnicities when it suits me.
But i love my multicultural nature.

Wash: Yeah, but psychic? That sounds like science fiction.
Zoë: You live on a spaceship, dear.
Wash: So?

Yeah, you guys are real brave, two by two, ganging up on a timid person like that. :( Breaks the heart. And then come back for seconds, even fiercer, just because she wanted to fade away, quietly. :( What does that make you? Big Damn Heroes!

Newsflash: just because you have the right to be mean, don't mean you have to be! You also have the right to remain silent, btw; something to consider. If you can't do something smart, do something right!

Ugh!

I'm lost. Who is ganging up on whom? I don't understand your comment or that bizzare tangent at the end of Moorhead's, either. Did I jump into something ongoing, or....

And if this turns into some kind of confrontation about race, why I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to pull myself up ramrod straight to my full 6'3" height, look you all in dead the eye, and run away like a little girl.

"Generalizations, indeed, all have their limits - even this one. Apply them often enough, and you will come inevitably upon some disconcerting exception.... But because philosophy is long and life is short we must assume, even when we can't entirely believe, that [things] fall into groups and classes, else we could never hope to study them at all" -HL Mencken

Here's how I figure this. A timid person comes in here, asking a timid question, in a timid fashion. Then she gets a brutal reply, causing her to withdraw, equally timidly. And then she gets beat up for that, for feeling hurt and quietly walking away, along with a whole speech why it is her own damn fault for feeling hurt, and why people have the constitutional right to be as mean as they damn well please.

And that just ain't right. And it certainly doesn't make him a hero. Not in my book, at least.

I honestly don't see where it turned into a ganging up on anyone, either, but it does lend support to me "tangent". If the timid person let that snide little quip of mine completely ruin their ability to speak further on the issue, then 1) it wasn't my intention and 2) that's still on them. I'm not saying they're a bad person for it, or anything else degrading about them in particular, I'm simply absolving myself of blame for the matter. Words should not be held in the same light as actions.

As for the "tangent" in question, I suppose it was long winded of me, but it's almost like I had a pre-cognition that someone would come to conflict with it, and felt the need to explain before it actually happened. What do you know, I was right.

In any case, I was ready to let this die after both my first and second comments, but both times people responded to me. Of course I'm more than happy to continue given the right motivation, but I don't really think it's going to get us anywhere. I'll still be a racist, misogynist, misanthrope at the end.

I wasnt timid when I started this thread, I just realized later on when I came back to it and read one or two responses to it, that in hindsight, it was a stupid topic.

*cracks up* That's it, BB. Inject some humor into an entirely too serious vein. Nicely done.

Meh, I'm new here, so I won't throw in a monkey wrench. I just wanted to point out that the US may very well be a free country, but this board seems to serve much more than We the People. And I don't see that any of the responses were rude or hurtful until they were taken in, perhaps, a way they weren't intended.

That said, I agree that it's everyone's right to be an a$$hole or a hero, so more power to everyone! Woot! Be yourselves!

What fun would the world be if everyone was nice? I believe we saw the results of that on Miranda, and it weren't purty. In fact, it was a bit corpsified and gross.

Aim to misbehave, folks. If nothing else, it makes things mighty interesting.
