I remember reading that Harrison Ford wanted Han Solo to be killed off in Return of the Jedi. IIRC, the desire came in part from an unwillingess to revise the role.

When the Star Trek franchise was revised, there was little problem with casting. None of the actors had gone on to stellar careers after the original series ended (please don't flame me all you TJ hooker fans).

What does the future hold for the acting careers of the Firefly cast and will any developments interfer with subsequent movie or television projects?

I gather that Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudor find frequent work on TV and film, though often as supporting characters rather than the lead. I've also seen Nathan Fillion in supporting roles in several movies and he seems to be finding work as leads in some upcoming B-movies. Summer Glau also is finding subsequent work, like her role in the upcoming Mammoth. I don't know anything about the remaining cast members.

Two questions come to mind:

1. Alan Tudor is quoted as saying he supported Joss's decision for Serenity. Was this driven by a desire to avoid future commitments to the Firefly world so that he could pursue alternative lines of work? (I understand that the cast have agreed to work in sequels. Does this also apply to Tudor?)

2. Which cast member is most likely to go onto mainstream success, either as the lead in a Nielson top-20 TV show or a motion picture grossing more than 100 million at the box office? (Serenity 2: The Search for Wash's Identical Twin Who Also Happens to be a Witty Pilot is acceptable as a guess).

Well, as much as I hated seeing Wash die in the movie, (I'd only seen one episode before the BDM, and that scene still got me,) it certainly did up the ante for the rest of the film. Any way you go about it, that had to have been a tough call to make.

Can't comment on Alan's own feelings about getting killed off, but possibly he understood that it was needed for the movie. From that point on, I was fearing for the life of every remaining member of that crew. On my first time watching that, I was seriously wondering if they weren't just all going to die at the hands of the reavers... Really ups the emotional impact.

Still... I do have trouble coming to grips with Wash's demise. At least he got to go out on a high note, what with the insane piloting and all. When (not if, gorramit ;) they do a sequel or something, they can always bring him back for flash-backs and the like, too...

You can take my hope when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

I have to point out that Adam Baldwin has quite the extensive body of work out there. He's quite successful in his niche of supporting cast tough guy roles. While I would love to see him succeed as a star - which I certainly believe he is in Serenifly - it may not even be where he wants to go with his life. I get the distinct impression that this is just a job to him, a means of supporting his family. I hope that didn't come out wrong. I really respect him for that.

*edited to clean up incredibly disjointed half-assed post*

That's Alan Tudyk dear. As for careers Alan's the one who is the busiest out of all of them, and though I still am quite upset about it (aren't we all?) he was the one who suggested to Joss to kill off his character. Out of all of them he was the one who didn't see himself playing the role for more than 2 seasons (Joss mentions that on the commentary as another reason Wash had to leave us, still not happy, but I'm starting to live with it)

And Adam was quoted as saying he's been doing this for 30 years (acting) and he's never enjoyed himself more. The three main male members of the show do have a busy future in the business, Adam and Alan especially, as for the ladies, Jewel has had many guest appearances and still plays on Canadian TV on occasion, Summer's become the future enjenue, and as for the others, we'll have to see, but I don't expect we'll be seeing them in a future boxing with the stars......

At least I hope not.

If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting
