A while back a Browncoat spoke to the Navy, set up a donation thread and The Browncoats donated money to buy sets of Firefly to send to the troops. Is it possible for this same person, who has the contacts to start another donation to send copies of Serenity to the guys and gals overseas?

I think it's a great idea, but I wouldn't know how to set it up. A few guys from my husband's unit are in Iraq right now, and I sent them several copies of Serenity, but they are the only people I know personally who are over there. And from what I understand, you have to send packages to a specific person, not a unit.

But if someone has any ideas, I'd be more than happy to donate another couple of copies of Serenity to the cause of bored troops everywhere. (and, of course, potential new converts...)

I think it's a brilliant idea. I don't know how to get it going, but I'll contribute in any way that I can.

My daughter has many friends on tour in Iraq and I know they love to receive stuff to watch and do, so this is a shiny idea.

Check out anysoldier.com. It will give you specific names to send to. It also has a search feature where you can put in, say, "dvd" and it will pull up all the units that are asking for dvds.

I dont know if its really a good idea. I mean, when the guys in Iraq see Firefly and Serenity, they may suddnely see themselves as the Alliance fighting the Independents. What if the Iraqis see it and get all inspired? Can you imagine a whole bunch of Iraqi-Mals fighting their war of independence from the evil old Alliance? (America) That would be a mess.

America loves a winner!

Heck yeah..I donated to that. It was a long time ago..it seems. I'd donate to this as well. Specifics?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Phew, thought I was the only thinking this was a good idea. If anyone reading this has any contacts with the person that took care of it for the Firefly DVD's, please steer them to this post. They had the account set up and the Navy contacts so it doesn't make much sense to start from ground zero again.

Somehow I'm not too worried about that. (*wishes for a emoticon*)

Speaking as one of those "evil" Americans, I'd love to see a collection of BDM DVDs taken up and donated. All those other "evil" Americans currently serving in our "evil old Alliance" military deserve the best we can give them, and like any other person with good taste, I'm sure they'd love Serenity.

And FYI--the Iraqis aren't fighting the "evil" Americans anymore, because they already got their independence--from Saddam Hussein. Remember him? And who got it for them? Why, the "evil old Alliance," America. Imagine that. The only ones fighting over there now are the Al Qaeda-supported terrorists who like to set off car bombs and blow women and little kids up. And if they get their hands on copies of the BDM and start acting like Mal, that'd be great. 'Cause you know what Mal has that they don't? Honor. When's the last time we saw him set off a bomb in a crowded marketplace and kill a bunch of innocent people?

Maybe that'll happen in Serenity 2...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I would gladly donate to this cause. The Firefly for the Troops campaign worked out great & was a great way to not only support our troops overseas, but to add to the growing number of browncoats.

No reason why we can do the same again.

Speaking as a troop in Iraq and a Firefly fan, I would love to see these delivered to everyone EVERYWHERE! Trouble is there are so many places to send them to...I'm thinking though maybe I can get the address for the Services Squadron, and they could hand them out to the troops...they handle Morale and Welfare for everyone...

More To Come

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Remember what Joss said about Jayne in the commentaries -- everybody's the hero of his own story. Our guys will see themselves as the Independents (as will the other guys, if they get their hands on a DVD, and a DVD player, and a TV, and enough electricity to run them, and somebody to translate it into Arabic).

By the way, I hope everybody realizes that the above comment is intended to be wacky fun, and does not represent a political sentiment. Nor do I intend to suggest that the fighters on either side have very much in common with Jayne Cobb.

I too would happily donate to a "Serenity For the Services" fund. Indeed, it would be a strong candidate for my "Tax Refund Tithe for Firefly" plan (see thread titled "Another 'Support Firefly' idea").

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't disagree on any particular point.
Why you humorless little vermin...go do something worthwhile like throwing yourself on a sharp blade in front of Tom Cruise's home or something! I'd jump up and down on a couch happily for that.
So much for my good mood.
I was JUST JOKING! Both my brother's sons are doing their 2nd or 3rd tour in Iraq, so of course I would not wish to see any harm come to them. Jeezzzus, and I thought I had no sense of humor!
I had already sent FireFly and Serenity to both of them. Charles wrote and told me he loves Firefly, but Rick thinks its nothing but a gay, soap opera (His words btw) Rick won't be getting anything from me anytime soon.
Well, gee, I'm really sorry I ruined your good mood, but it seems only fair--you ruined mine first.
You can't turn anywhere online these days without finding someone taking their opportunity to sneak in and give the US a little kick in the shins with some sniggering cheap shot. I'm tired of it. Doing my best to ignore it and not read them, but every now and then I accidentally stumble across one, and this time, I had to say something.
If you'd re-read my original post, and actually pay attention to what I said this time, you'll see that I never suggested you wished harm on any US soldier, so I'm not sure where you're getting that. My only point was that I'm fed up with these sorts of comments ("jokes") that accuse America of being some evil nation of tyrants out to enslave the world. Or that suggest your brother's sons are oppressors serving in some horrible militia that are trying to keep the "good guys" (like Mal & co.) down.
Before you call me humorless, maybe you should take a longer look at yourself and your own sense of humor first, and give a little more consideration ahead of time to the sorts of things you post online. Of course, the great thing about this country is that you absolutely have the right to say whatever you want... just as I have the right to be offended by it. If you don't want your good mood ruined every time you make a joke on the internet, then maybe you oughta make different sorts of "jokes." 'Cause there's a lot of us "humorless" folk out here.
(And BTW, of the two of us, which one did the name-calling and the wishing-of-gruesome-deaths? Here's a hint: it wasn't the "vermin," who likes to think he's a little too grown up for that kind of thing...)
Not to ruin the fun, but could we take this post back to its original discussion about how to get things to the troops? Its much more productive than ranting.
Thinking back to those early days of the coats, I think 11th hour had something to do with this and I know Chris Buchannan helped out, you may want to do some digging on the old prospero board I am pretty sure all participating parties were on that board.
