This might of been spoken about so I'm sorry if regurgitating pervious postings.

Here it is:

Do you think Mal asked Simon and River to stay on Serenity b/c he was really looking out for them and that he needed a doctor or is it b/c Inara threatened to leave if he kicked them off??

Did Jayne allow Hobson to escape b/c he knew that somehow, he would end up getting killed…just what Jayne wanted?

Now that I’ve watched the series and movie enough to know it practically word-for-word, I kind of like going back and trying to pick up on things that I miss.

Tonight I plan on watching Shindig to see if you can really see the guy in the Hawaiian shirt, khaki shorts, and earphones around his neck tell the dancers to dance.

I think it's because he's really a great big softie and the second he saw poor little nekkid River in the box, his heart melted, and they came under his protection.

No wonder the guy is always broke. Every time they take on a passenger, he falls in love, and they end up family/crew.

I just love Mal, can you tell?

I can tell...but then again...who can't love Mal?

Twodifsoks,
You have some pretty good theories. I cannot say you are wrong or correct but I have few ideas of my own.
I think Mal asked the doctor to stay for several reasons. I don't think Inara had a lot to do with it. I'm sure it may have been in the back of his mind but I think he realized with how much trouble they get into a doctor would be very helpful. Mal can also tell Simon is gullable, and trustworthy for the most part. Considering Simon and River are wanted by the Alliance Mal knows that Simon isn't going anywhere or going to betray him.
Jayne may have changed his mind after he let Dobson out. Since it never showed Dobson being freed by Jayne, Dobson could...have gotten out by himself. But Jayne is also a softie at times so maybe he changed his mind after he let Dobson go. Perhaps he left it up to fate and if Dobson killed Mal then he'd take the money and leave, seeing as how Jayne wouldn't be the one killing the cap his hands would appear clean and he'd be rich, if Dobson would deliver on his end.
Anyways, those are my thoughts. A lot of ifs and possibilities, but that's why they are theories instead of facts.

I absolutely love it when people weigh in. Thanks a bunch, IS!! :)

I do see your point about the whole Jayne thing but what I'm saying is a little different. Dobson used some sort of a razor blade to cut the tape binding his hands. What I think is that Jayne set it up for him to free himself and watch how things turned out.

Sometimes I don't think we give Jayne enough credit. Although he claims to not have "schoolin" I think he may be way smarter than he claims to be.

AWESOME!!!

Gotta think the Dobson thing is a wild card. Jayne, when given a job, does it. Remember, Dobson wasn't a schmuck. He WAS trained by the alliance. I do know however that I liked Mal from the moment he walked in and shot Dobson out of hand with no discussion. I thougth "this is my kind of captain."

I really wonder about Jayne and Dobson's escape. I really don't see Jayne overlooking that thing Dobson uses to cut himself free. Though I also think Mal knows Jayne better than we do. If he trusts Jayne's word that he didn't have anything to do with it then I have to believe he's right. He knew right away that Jayne was involved with the Feds on Ariel. Still eats at me though. I want to know for sure.

The answer, of course, is YES. That's why these characters are so great. They'll keep you guessing. Just when you think you know them, they'll surprise you.

I think Inara's threat to leave was mostly aimed at Mal's threat to throw them out at Whitefall (or a might sooner, hehe), where they "wouldn't survive a day".

I doubt she meant he should take them on as passengers, period, or that she would have left had he sent them off somewhere else where it's safer.

His choice to keep them was probably all his own. He's like a shepherd. Sees lost sheep, gathers them to him. (If they live by his rule...)

That's a cool theory!

It's, however, also an extremely volatile plan. After all, Dobson did shoot Kaylee already and may have shot anyone else, as well, even Jayne.

And considering Mal's little speech to Simon about someone having to "deal" with Dobson, something tells me his survival was not 100% certain to begin with.

My guess is that Dobson was just that resourceful.

Funny. Everybody always speculates about Jayne having helped Dobson. And although he did a horrible thing at Ariel, betraying dear River, I believe him with regard to Dobson. Primarily because of Jayne asking Dobson:

"Does helping you out mean turning on the Captain?"

See, I believe this is vital to Jayne's personality; call it merc's honor, or something, but Jayne doesn't do that. In Ariel, he turned poor River in, but only because he didn't think he was doing it to the Captain:

Jayne: "What are you taking this so personal for? It ain't like I ratted you out to the Feds!"
Mal: "Oh, but you did! You turn on any of my crew, you turn on me!"

Also, don't be thrown off by this mock convo between Jayne and Mal:

Mal: "How come you didn't turn on me, Jayne?"
Jayne: "Money wasn't good enough."
Mal: "What happens when it is?"
Jayne: "Well that'll be an interesting day."

I say "mock", because, realistically, the money was of course more than good enough. Dobson offered him enough to buy his own ship, even. Face it, if that wasn't enough, nothing is ever gonna be -- which I believe is precisely what Jayne was telling the Captain. So, I believe Jayne.

Far more suspect, in my mind, was Book's behavior in all of this. Book knocks on Dobson's door, saying:

"Lawman, it's Shepherd Book. I believe you're in more danger than ..."

Dobson knocks him out, of course. But what was Book trying to accomplish there in the first place? Was it just his conscience troubling him? Or did he, indirectly, give away something about his past? As in: "Psst, crew don't know this, but I'm really Alliance connected, so let me help to spring you."

At any rate, I believe Jayne when he said he didn't have nothing to do with that.

But he was in a position to knock Book out because he had cut through the tape around his wirst with a razor or nail file type object. An object that was either secreted about his person or supplied by somebody else, presumably Jayne.

Personally I think if Jayne was involved with Dobson's escape he would have just undone him instead of leaving him with a knife to maybe be discovered in the act of escape.

Oh-that's something I totally passed over-Book was trying to do something when he went to Dobson. Good points!!
